Who else notably went "electric" in arguably substantive ways during the 70's?? By "substabative" – I mean ways that partially transformed their musical vision – in ways that weren't just about "selling out" – or trying to be more "popular". (For whom can reasonable arguments be made that such a "electric" transformation occurred in their creative vision – that went beyond simply doing what they'd always done, only with electric instruments. Or going "commercial" i.e., Donald Byrd) For me, I'd strongly consider including Joe Henderson's Milestone output. Argue all you want, but most of that shit wasn't about selling out. Like it or not (and I do like it), there's some heavy music there, and Joe's playing was as strong as ever (IMHO). Everyone else I'm thinking of were primarily sidemen in the 60’s before becoming leaders in the 70’s (Marcus Belgrave, Bennie Maupin, etc…). So I guess in my question above, I’m thinking of leaders in particular – about overall creative vision, rather than individual playing characteristics. Others??

I like discs 1-4 best (especially that one session with Lee Morgan). And in some ways - I think it would have made more sense to have limited the Elvin box to just studio sessions (which then would have been 8 or 9 albums spread across 6 discs).

Another serious question, Chuck. In your opinion, did Ornette also go off the rails in the 70's?? (Or, rather -- in your opinion, did Ornette also make mostly poor choices in the 70's??) Or perhaps more generally speaking... Are "Miles + Electricity and Funk" and "Ornette + Electricity and Funk" more different, or more similar??
-
Fair enough. I have that trouble with some 70's Miles myself too.

This post was half in jest, but nobody came back. Did I hit a nerve? Just trying to discover everybody's POD. Serious question for you, Chuck... What "post Wayne Shorter" 70's Miles Davis albums do you like?? Any of them?? Edit: And what's your general opinion of the value of Mile's 70's output??

a great requiem is my idea of party music

I'd be particularly interested in any 20th Century choral requiems that people can suggest. (I wish Hindemith had written one.) -

Much as it's probably overplayed/overperformed, you really can't beat the Brahms German Requiem. I've sung the thing probably 6 or 7 times (I'm 37), and every time the symphony chorus I'm in has to / gets to sing it again, I'm aways afraid I'll get tired of it -- but I almost never do. -

60-minutes in length, with no vocal or choral parts -- a "Requiem" in name only. The instrumentation is chamber orchestra (about 22 instruments, as I recall), and is really a concerto for trumpet (and to a lesser degree, piano too), and small orchestra. One of my all-time favorite 20th Century works. Edit: And if I remember correctly, Henze is an atheist too. -
Miles sells more than Trane.

The "this cat" link got screwed up (at least for me). Here's one, unscrewed... Grooverider

They can fuck with the Miles catalog all they want for all I care. Have rappers and shit over Miles. Pull apart the multi-tracks. Sample this, distort that. Remix it all to hell, for all I care. Some of it WILL be the shit ( ), some of it will be so-so, and some of it will really stink. All of that's possible and probable, of that I'm sure. So do all that, sure, great, do it. But DON'T stop reissuing more unreleased stuff -- like the "On The Corner" Box, or the Juan-Les-Pins material (both disc's worth, thank you). The world (or some of it, anyway) wants THAT shit too. Ain't the same world that might want the remix/rap stuff -- but who knows, maybe they'll sell more of each, if they do both.

So, again, what's the deal with all the multiple issues of Ayler recordings, with so many different covers (and multiple titles even, sometimes). Why him?? What's the story here. Unless somebody can point out at least three other musicians with as many "multiple cover issues" in their catalog, then there's GOT to be some story here.

There's been much worse posted here on this board. (Hell, I've even posted some of it!!) Doesn't bother me none. -
What the hell?? I don't think I've ever seen SO many albums, each with SO many multiple covers(!), all by the same artist. Is there any other artist with a catalog so full of multiple covers like this?? This is whack!!

WWHPD?? (What would Horace Parlan do??) Actually, I'm half serious, re: Parlan's limited use (complete lack of use, as I understand it) -- of two or three of the fingers on his right hand. So then, any chance you could tape your index finger to your middle finger, and then just play two notes only with your right hand, using only your thumb and ring finger?? I'm no professional keyboard player, but trying it out myself just now, it seems like if you could only use one finger along with your thumb, that the ring-finger would be easiest to use anyway (easier than the thumb and middle finger, and certainly easier than thumb and pinkie). Who knows, you might even develop some interesting left-hand techniques in the process, trying to compensate. Might not hurt to try once, anyway (but don't sue me if it doesn't work )

jazz standards we dont like
Rooster_Ties replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Everyone plays the crap out of it. Agreed. -
Lito is also quite an important recording in that it's one of Woody Shaw's very few (only?) dates in a piano-less quartet. (One of Woody's last recorded dates too, if I recall -- maybe his very last.) VERY unique in the Woody Shaw cannon, and a wonderful recording.
