Seems like I'm forever stumbling on really bad cover versions of tunes on Youtube. Occasionally something good, or at least interesting, or maybe creative --- but more often than not, REALLY scary bad stuff. You've been warned... Post other stuff you stumble on that's too bad/good not to share.

Nothing has even come close to filling the void left by Jazzmatazz's "upcoming releases" no longer being current. AAJ's sad attempt, I'm looking right at you. 1) Not one Blue Note release that I can find (not one!!). What the hell?? Where's the upcoming RVG's for early next year?? (Which we already know about here, and have known for a month or two, if I remember correctly.) Where's Charles Tolliver's upcoming Blue Note date?? (We've known about that here too - including a street date - for months!!) There's probably more on the Blue Note website, and we know how "just in time" those announcements are. Sheesh!! 2) No free-text to describe releases that need a tiny bit of further explaination (for thinks like first issues of previously unreleased material, or descriptions of material being expanded (even if just to say "w/ 5 bonus tracks") - which isn't much to ask for). Or list the year of recording for previously unreleased material (like "Passing Ships", for instance). 3) Not one new release that doesn't have an exact release date, so no way to list new releases that are more than just "on the drawing board" - but releases that aren't quite firm enough to have an exact release date (but which do have a target date, or month). 4) Very, very few releases that don't already have active CDUniverse listings -- so does this mean that anything that CDUniverse doesn't carry, or just doesn't have active on their site yet - doesn't (or can't?) get into the list?? That means you'll only hear about releases about 5 to 6 weeks before their streetdate, I guess. 5) Almost nothing listed for more than 1 month from now. (Very few releases listed for anything after December 2006, almost none for January and February, and only one release listed for the entire year of 2007 past February.) There's a mountain of new releases that could be reported on, so where is that information?? 6) No way to look back at recent previous releases, like Jazzmatazz used to provide (well, and still does for the moment). I'm not saying all this to complain about Jazzmatazz being gone (though I sure as heck do miss it). But if the AAJ solution thinks that it, in any way, even comes close to filling that void -- then think again. As much (I mean "as little") new release info as there is on the AAJ site, they might as well not bother. -_- What's the point??

Now there's some great news! I'll second that!! Since PAX was in the last round of Conns, I think that means the entire original Andrew Hill Mosaic set has been reissued on CD domestically, with the only exception being that last date with Sam Rivers. And I'll bet that one ends up being a Conn within the next year or three too. Yippee!!! (Not for myself so much -- I've already got the Mosaic -- but I'm thrilled all of Hill's material is becoming available again, for other people to be able to purchase.)

Even Miles looked back a tiny bit, from time to time (OK, mostly only at the very end). Still, it might be interesting if PG did look back once every other decade or so (and more than just one song). And by my watch, he really hasn't done any old Genesis material for a good 30 years, save for one song on a box set.

I saw Couric for the very first time Tuesday night, two nights ago (my wife heard a rumor that they were covering some story that somehow related to some U.S. Dept of Education case (my wife works for the Federal Dept. of Ed.), and she wanted me to tape CBS News for her). The story never materialized, but it gave me/us our first chance to see Couric in action. We were both VERY unimpressed. Overall, it seemed more amateurish than we were expecting. Specifically, Couric's questions for her standup reporters (at the Pentagon, the White House, and/or in front of Congress) were VERY leading (and even more so than is the norm for those kind of onscreen interactions). She basically set up the question, asked the question, and then put an answer in their mouths for them to acknowledge or refute!!! Seriously, the exchange was something like this... "With all the latest blah, blah, blah going on in Iraq, what is the administration's current thought reguarding blah, blah, blah?? Some have said blah, blah, blah, which others have taken to mean blah, blah, blah -- isn't that right??" Seriously!! My wife and I looked at each other, and we were both thinking WTF is that?? Also, she momentarily seemed somewhat unsure of herself at a number of points as well, which might be a result of her still being new to the broadcast. But still, as much broadcasting as she's done, I would expect her to be more on top of her game than what we saw Tuesday.

I might be inclined to take those dupes of Judgement and Smokestack off your hands. I've got the big Hill Mosaic, but have been meaning to pick up the singles of both those titles for a while now. (Name a price that's reasonable for both of us, and it's a deal. )

Too much talking about thinking. We need to think about talking about thinking first. I've already said too much. Just think about it.

I think at this point we'd be better off thinking about putting together just a proposed list. I mean, it's way too early to think about any kind of an actual list. Or maybe at least that's something we should think about talking about first, you know, before we think about any actual possible names.

I'm looking for a really good Reggae box set, 4 discs maximum, without too much "modern" reggae (please, not much that's more recent than 1990. Actually, I think what I'm looking for is a bunch of music like this CD sampler that I once had, but have since lost (or given away, or something). Wish I still had it, actually. Though I know it would be covering old ground, I'd still like to hear a full Genesis reunion (even just a one-off performance) that includes Gabriel. I'd really like to hear PG cover some of that old material, informed by all the music he's done since. No, it wouldn't be important, or even all that significant. Just something perhaps enjoyable. And I say that as someone who isn't an early Genesis devotee. I've got way, Way, WAY more solo Gabriel than I do Genesis (pre or post Gabriel). Heck, I've even got PG's 3rd and 4th solo albums all in German, for cripe's sake. I'd just like to hear his current voice covering some of that older material. Is that too much to ask?? I thought this was quite nice: Carpet Crawlers 1999 - Genesis (with PG!)
