Can one really listen to TOO much Sun Ra??
-
Whenever I tip the band, I never give anything less than $5, sometimes even $10 (though in recent years, I've had less funds to do that as often as I'd like to). And every once in a blue moon, I've tipped $20 - if the band is really on fire and playing something really unique (I think I've tipped $20 probably twice in the last 10 years). $1 - that's crazy!!

OMG!! Exhibit A: Don Cherry Live At The Montmartre 1965 Magnetic Records - Volume 2 MRCD 112 German Import CD rare!! (only $178.50, plus shipping). Makes volume one (from the same seller) look like a bargain... Exhibit B: Don Cherry Live At The Montmartre 1965 Magnetic Records - Volume 1 MRCD 111 German Import CD rare!! (only $52.00, plus shipping). Hell, at those prices -- the shipping ought to be FREE!!! FYI, I've got both discs (original, silver-disc issue from the early 90's), if anybody wants both of them for only $200.00. (Plus shipping, of course. )

How To Donate To The Organissimo Forums
Rooster_Ties replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Forums Discussion
Did the "donate" button go bye-bye with the most recent upgrade to the board?? Or has it been AWOL for a while now, and I just didn't notice?? In any case, I've got the hankerin' to pony up, and was just wonderin'. (This place probably don't come close to payin' for itself, and I wanna make sure I do my part.) -
organissimo wants to play in YOUR TOWN
Rooster_Ties replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
THE place to play in Kansas City would be The Blue Room - right at the corner of 18th & Vine (right next to the American Jazz Museum). Holds maybe a couple hundred when totally packed, but a good night is more like 50-75. Live music Thu., Fri., and Sat. nights. (Monday is "jam session" night, and they're closed Tue., Wed., and Sun. nights.) The Blue Room (click) Free For All, Spontoonious and I all have some pull with the booking guy there (Gerald - a great guy too, I might add - plays tenor). And I'd be kidding myself if I didn't admit that they both probably have more pull wth Gerald than I do. FWIW, I gave him your first CD (out of the batch of six I bought way back when), so you guys should at least minimally already be on his radar. (If that doesn't work out, lemme know - and I can come up with some other possible venues -- but The Blue Room really is the best room in town IMHO (and by some margin too). -

How about what is probably some good Joe Henderson. (OK, maybe just "OK" Joe Henderson perhaps), but in a bad context?? from 1976: Coke Escovedo - Comin' At Ya <-- click for AMG review, w/ sound-clips. The AMG has sound-clips, and Joe can clearly be heard on two or three clips. Check out tracks 1, 3, and especially the clip of track #9. (I'm at work now, and can't get the clips to play through the firewall here -- but I remember track #9 being the best example of Joe's playing, among the three.) When bad albums happen to good musicians. EDIT: Just checked, and the firewall didn't hold me back. Do check out the clip of track #9 for sure -- by luck it's an entire solo from Joe.

Why? ← No shit. Why? It's like Wilburn is holding this material hostage. (And before Chuck chimes in, no - it's not like we (the public) has any right to hear this material.) But if everything is legal, and the record company has a contract that fairly compensates the artist and/or his estate, then why put up with this "I want a fucking sticker that says I'm a nice guy on it" - or whatever it is that Wilburn thinks it is that he wants this week. God, I hope this doesn't put the kibosh on an 8th Miles studio box (it is 8, right?), with the complete ON THE CORNER sessions. I hope it doesn't, but it probably will. (And how is it that Columbia managed to get out sets #1-#7, from Miles and Trane through Jack Johnson?? Why wasn't Wilburn a total dick about them too??)

I'll be darn - they didn't. Could have sworn the order sounded the same, so I assumed it was. The first three tunes on disc #1 of the Select are the same three tunes on side one of One For One. Just not the same order.
-
Seem to recall that they preserved the order of the tunes on the Mosaic Select -- or at least the side with Tolliver/Maupin/Patrick. It was a nice sequence, and I'm glad they kept it.

The head to B. Harper's "Capra Black" - crazy!!
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Musician's Forum
I did get it - a couple months after I started this thread (it took that long for my buddie and me to hook up), but I'll have to hunt around the house for it now. Had forgotten I'd started this thread. Meant to make a copy for Free For All too -- in the hopes he could get a group he's in (or in sometimes, anyway) to take it on - perhaps the Westport Art Ensemble? Lard, where did those copies get too?? (dig, dig, dig...) -
First Saxophonist to make a go of it without piano
Rooster_Ties replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Way, way, way, back - during my very first "Intro to Jazz 101" class in college (long before I'd ever "drank the Kool-Aid" ) - I vaguely remember there was a cut played in class that was just sax, bass and drums (or maybe even just two of those three instruments). A live recording where the piano-player was late to the date, and the group had to go on without him. It was presented in the class like it was a "holy-grail"-type moment in jazz history (no idea if this was true or not). No idea also, who might have been on the recording (I could mention some random names from the 40's, but they'd all be wild guesses). Maybe something on the old 5-LP Smithsonian Guide To Jazz set?? -- which was like the bible (as far as this Jazz 101 class went). Time to try and find the track-listing and personnel for the Smithsonian Guide on-line, and see what I can find that fits the description. -
60's hardbop trumpeters in 'progressive' contexts
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Chuck, can you clarify about when you think Harold started to go off the rails for you? For instance, would you characterize his early work with Bobby Hutcherson (late 60's) as being part of the downward trend you describe? Whether or not we see eye to eye on this, I do really want to try to have a genuinely better understanding of where (in time) you think Land started to veer off course. For instance, how about Land on "Medina/Spiral"?? ??? I know, I'm helping derail my own thread - but I'm really liking this tangent (enough that I might even change the 'topic description'). -
I seem to remember it being closer to deep than jam-sessionistic. I've got a burn of something fitting this description (and the time is close to 35 minutes) - so there's a good chance it's the same thing. I'll see if I can find it, and give it a spin. Been over a year since I've heard it - but if I remember right, I was wishing there was more of the same or similar.
-
Grey market, for sure. Think I've heard the one long track from '73 (about 35 minutes long, if I remember) -- and if it is the one I heard (and no tellin' 100% that it was), I remember it being pretty good.

Just got my hair cut a couple hours ago, by chance. Was in the neighborhood anyway, and stopped in to try make an appointment for sometime later this week (hopefully) -- and it turned out I was able to get in right then and there (rarely is that the case). As usual, we talked about art-house movies, and urban re-development issues. Oh, and new restaurants. Somebody asked about cost and tipping -- haircuts from my stylist used to be $16 for the last couple years, and they just went up to $17. I usually tip about $2 or $3 at most. Suppose I could tip more (and I did back when haircuts were only $13 or $14), but as the hair-cut price goes up - down (slightly) goes my tip.

Male Stylist, same guy for the last 11 years. Gay, but not flamingly so (not that there's anything wrong with that ). All my life I've always had the best luck with barbers/stylists (hair-cuttists??) who cut both men's and women's hair (and by most definitions, I guess that means pretty much all stylists, and few barbers). Mostly male stylists, over the years (hardly any women, or none that I became a regular customer of). Don't know that they've all been gay, but I suspect a majority of them were. One was a guy who taught jazz piano as an adjunct instructor at the college I went to -- and I took one semester credit of jazz piano from him at the school.

No ROOTS yet (any day now), but I got a package from Dusty Groove today with (among other things) this little tidbit in it... The tune "Right On For The Darkness" is 7:28 of absolute pure heaven!! LOTS to like on this album, even if it only clocks in at something like 36 minutes. (Wish there was a Rhino edition, with bonus material.) In any case, it was only $10 from Dusty, so I'm a happy camper.

60's hardbop trumpeters in 'progressive' contexts
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Good catch!! - hadn't thought of that one, but it fits this topic perfectly... Donald Byrd on Dimensions and Extensions (1967) -
Another result of a search for something else, and this thread came up. Reminds me that I've purchased quite a few "trumpet + piano trio" dates over the last couple years (at least 6 or 8). I need to dig 'em out, and update this thread. Several (most?) that I don't remember seeing as I just skimmed through the previous proceedings.

Trumpet ideas for Andrew Hill / Jason Moran???
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Just lookin' for something else, and the old Big-O search function brought this topic up. Reminds me that we're gonna get, of all people none other than Charles Tolliver on record with Mr. Hill in February. Can't wait!! -
We ought to discuss its companion release here in this same thread... It's from the very same concert, same group, and same date (literally) -- why this wasn't released as a two-CD set, I'll never understand.
