  1. FYI, Chuck made it to KC safe and sound, and he called me with his cell-phone number. I've PM-ed it to Paul (and Eric too!!), and I guess the plan is to meet Chuck and his wife around 10am or so at The Classic Cup on The Plaza. I'll have a map tonight for Chuck of where the Classic Cup is (since I should see him tonight at the Blue Room). If any other KC people are available, Chuck and I will be at the Blue Room starting sometime between 9pm and 10pm. I'm still workin' on being at the breakfast hang too, but it may not be in the cards. PS: If Chuck indicates a slightly later (or earlier) preferred time for breakfast, I'll report than in this thread late tonight. His phone message this afternoon said he was up for both tonight, and tomorrow - so I think we have a plan.

  3. So, was this set ever on the "Running Low" list, before it hit "Last Change" status?? I know it wasn't ever in the catalog as "Running low". But I mean, was it ever on the "Running Low" list on the website even?? That may account for the especially fast run on things at the end. Funny how a set like the Byrd/Adams box probably only sells a few copies a week for several years, and then -- suddenly -- they fly off the shelves in no time flat. Probably 200 or 300 sets in just two weeks. If only there was some way to motivate people to buy these things sooner than later (over the full time the set is available) -- instead of them waiting until the last minute -- then I think there'd be fewer people missing out when the time finally came for it to go OOP. And another thing's for damn sure, that sets would be selling out, instead of timing out --- cuz that's just lost sales for Mosaic.

  5. You got the Joe set right. Check the editing I've done on your post. The titles in green are the Jordan ones. The Joe titles are in your bold. What's left is by Carmel. I repeat - the Jordan cuts are superb. The whole thing is excellent ( and the arrangement on "Chelsea Bridge" is really nice), but those Clifford titles are my favorites. ← Hey Jim, Since you're maybe the only person on this board who already has this release, I've got some trivia (or trivial) questions for you about it. Can you let us (or at least me) in on the composers of the tunes on the Clifford and Carmel dates?? Don't worry about going down the list, tune by tune, with exactly who wrote what. But I have to admit that I'm not nearly as familiar with Carmel's output, nor Clifford's --- as I am with Joe's. So few of the song titles are ringing a bell with me, thus I'm assuming most of the tunes are originals by Clifford and Carmel?? Is this a correct assumption?? Collective Personel: Erich Kleinschuster (tb), Hans Salomon (ts, bcl), Rudi Wilfer (p, org), Fritz Pauer (p), Rudolf Hansen (b), Jimmy Woode (b), Erich Bachträgl (dr), Joe Henderson (ts), Carmell Jones (tp), Clifford Jordan (ts) Also, what is the instrumentation on each of the four dates?? For instance, I see another tenor player listed, so does that imply a three-horn front-line on any of the dates, and which one(s)?? Any interesting "three-horn front-line" arrangements worthy of mention?? Heck, some of those Joe tunes were first recorded with one-horn front lines -- so any interesting arrangements of Joe's tunes worth mentioning?? Which date(s) have organ on them?? And is it organ on the complete session, or a mix of organ and piano?? I told you my questions were trivial?
  6. I would suggest people e-mail Dusty about it, and/or sign-up for their e-mail notification about this specific title. Dusty needs to know that there is some serious demand for this title -- and I suspect that they may be one of the only sources for it here in the states. Seriously, people, please e-mail Dusty about this. We're all gonna be pissed if this title becomes a bitch to get ahold of, and our e-mails are probably the difference between Dusty ordering 2 or 3 copies -- or closer to 10 or 15 (or even 20). Get on it people!!
  7. Question: Was "It All Comes Back to You" a ballad, uptempo tune, or a midtemp tune?? Not sure, off-hand, if I've ever heard it before, and a quick check of the Woody critical discography indicates this was the only time he recorded the tune.
  8. It's lookin' like I may not be able to join you guys for breakfast. My Saturday is a little packed (an all-afternoon planning meeting for a not-for-profit symphony board I serve on), and my morning is lookin' busy too. Still may sneak it in, though, if I get the chance. Paul and Eric, can either or both you guys PM me with your phone numbers (Paul I have yours somewhere, but lord only knows where). That way I can give them to Chuck if he calls, though I expect to see him tonight at The Blue Room. I'll also print out a map for Chuck to get to Classic Cup, and give it to him tonight. That's the place on 47th Street (301 W. 47th, to be exact -- just looked it up on-line), down on the Plaza, right?? Haven't been there in ages. Only asking cuz there used to be another Classic Cup in Westport back in the late 90's, so I wanna make sure there isn't some third location that I'm just not aware of. Edit: Just saw you said "on the Plaza" in a post above, Paul - so that clears that up. Thanks!!

    Hard to pin me down as to whether I'd rather have lots more unreleased studio material, or more unreleased live recordings. A number of folks here have be critical of the quality and/or volume of unreleased material that was included in the Jack Johnson box, for instance. But not me. Most of it turned out to be rather darn interesting (IMHO), and I'm really glad most of it came out. Assuming an 8th Columbia studio box comes out (or 8th & 9th boxes), each with several hours of unreleased studio material, I'm definitely interested.
  11. Roughly speaking, what's the ratio of tenor to soprano time on this new one?? Not that has any influence on whether I'll buy it or not -- I'm there, either way. It's just that the more tenor Wayne plays, the happier me be!!!

  13. Any stateside sources for this one?? These sides look MIGHTY tempting, especially since Joe's date appears to be all his own material ( ). Note the bolded titles below, which appear to be Joe's set... Titles: The Highest Mountain, Sandra, Ee Bah Lickey Doo, Jolly And The Ranson, Yellow Gale, The Goose, Doug`s Prelude, Chelsea Bridge, The Kicker, Inner Urge, Reconda Me, Serenity, Mamacita, The J-Dance, A Time For Peace, Rush Hour, Fantangolin, Just Swinging With The Cats, And Things Will Change, Impressions Of Skandinavia, Looking Across, 872, Vienna, Mud House Would I be right in assuming the first 7 tunes are the session with Carmell, and the last 11 tunes are the two sessions with Clifford?? (And do I have my assumptions right about the tunes from Joe's set??) PS: I just e-mailed Dusty Groove to see if they had any plans to carry this one. Will report back here with the results.
  14. All the album covers are still there for me (and I'm not even logged in to their site at the moment). Ditto for the photos of musicians, including multiple pics for the better-known ones. Sideman info and sound-clips are available if you register. I didn't and still don't like the changes either (and many of the changes downright stink) -- but having the audio-clips for OOP titles is a HUGE plus ( ), and one I'll hate to see go if they ever start charging $$$ to get at them (cuz I'm sure I won't pay any kind of fee to use their site).

He's played with numerous notables, among them Roy Haynes, Clark Terry, Randy Weston, Mongo Santamaria and Frank Foster.   17. A group could certainly get together on Saturday too, if that doesn't tax Chuck too much. Or perhaps Saturday would be preferable (over Friday) for other reasons. I didn't mean to hijack things to a Friday night decision. Just saw that Tardy was in town, and my mind started racing. ( ) Who has a good Saturday suggestion?? My house is a disaster, as my wife and I are remodelling our kitchen (and half our kitchen has drifted out into our dining room and is starting to encroach on the living room even). In other words, she'd kill me if I had guests over in the state it's in. Any good breakfast hangs?? "First Watch" in Westport is always good, but I'm sure there are better suggestions lurking out there. I never go out for breakfast, so I'm at a loss. ("The Corner" in Westport is overrated in my book, by my mother always loved it - so what do I know.) How late are you playing Friday night, Paul?? Maybe you can catch Tardy's last set.
  18. FYI, Greg Tardy is playing down at The Blue Room at 18th & Vine on Friday Night, with Helen Sung in the band. Last time I saw the both of them, it was one of THE best nights of jazz I'd heard in this town within the previous year or two. Tardy is Andrew Hill's "first call" tenor player, and a hell of a player at that. He played with Hill the one time I saw him (Hill) up in Iowa a couple years ago, and played his ass off. I'll e-mail Chuck shortly with this same message. Suggest we all catch up with each other Friday night (June 11th) at The Blue Room. Friday shows usually start at 8:30pm, and runs until Midnight or 12:30am. Should make for a wonderful night. ($10 cover, with no drink minimum.) If anybody needs to contact me between now and Friday, feel free to give me a call. Here's my number, day or evening --> (816) - 931-6415. (Hopefully I'll remember to edit the number out of this message after Friday night.) My wife is flying in from being out of town for work this week, but I should be able to hook up with people at the Blue Room by 9pm at the latest (knock on wood). By the way, Spontoonious (Joe) and I are having lunch tomorrow, and hopefully he'll be available to join us as well. Paul, you got a decent gig on Friday?? Maybe we could make a mini-pub-crawl of the night, between Tardy's gig and yours. Where you playin' at?? - if it's local. Maybe we can also suggest Chuck bring a handful of his new Diz & Bird discs with him, you know, so we can spare the U.S. postal service of some unnecessary business.
  19. Got my copy of the Byrd/Adams set in the mail, just today. A friend of mine bought one four or five years ago, which I borrowed from him briefly shortly after he got it. I seem to remember it came in four, separate "one CD per case" jewel boxes. The set I got in the mail today came in two "two CD per case" jewel boxes. Am I remembering right that this set originally came in four standard jewel boxes??? (Or am I confusing it with another set. ) Who bought this set when it first came out?? What'd't come in??

  21. More from Tom: I should also mention that the biggest part of my wanting to really "back off" from anything and everything, is that the Historic Homes Tour is over finally. I was in charge of the entire event, and my committee of four people spent 8 months planning and preparing -- meeting monthly, and then weekly for about the last 6-8 weeks. We had 60 volunteers on the day of the event, and it literally became the better part of a full-time job for me for about the last month before the event. And then -- POOF!!! – in an instant, it came and went. I've only been in that kind of position about three or four times in my life, where something became all-consuming in my life (and where it was all riding on me), and then the event was over with -- just like that. Each and every one of those times, I've felt this huge hole in my life, no matter how successful the event was. Every day, for weeks on end, preparing for the "the day" would be the one thing I had to focus on, the one thing that motivated me -- and then suddenly, there was nothing else important to do the next day. Or the next day. Or the next day... I don't know if I'd call it a depression that I've been going through since mid-May, because I haven't felt depressive as such. But since then, I haven't felt like doing a goddamn thing, even to the point where everything seems mundane, and thus everything seems like a Herculean task. I won’t go into any more details, except to say that this is a borderline serious problem for me. I'm not trying to turn this thread into a therapy session for poor old Rooster. But I do think I owe all of you some kind of explanation for my absence on the board, and my fairly irresponsible handling of my BFT.

I worked out a deal with someone on the board to trade him my long OOP Don Cherry Mosaic (in near mint condition), in exchange for him buying me a Byrd/Adams set -- which he ordered for me late on Saturday night. I'm assuming I got in under the deadline, and if so, whew!!! This was always on my "to buy" list, but I never had the funds available to make it happen. Can't wait to finally own that late 60's Byrd/Adams date -- the one with Chick Corea. PS: I'll know soon enough when I get the set in the mail later this week (hopefully), but can anybody with the set answer a quick question for me. Which (if any) of the following tunes were penned by Chick Corea??? While your at it, which of the tunes on this date were penned by performers on the date??? I'm assuming the most likely contributors of tunes would have been Byrd, Kyner (Red), and/or Corea. I had forgotten, until just now, that Sonny Rad was on this date too -- which is a big plus for me.
  23. An update from Tom: Hello everyone, I'm really sorry I've been absent or under the radar for several weeks. I'm OK, but have just had a hell of lot going on in April and May with that Historic Homes Tour that I was in charge of. The event went well, with over 300 people on the tour (which was May 15th). Then the following weekend the symphony chorus that I sing was involved in a performance of the opera Turandot (by Puccini), which we were grossly under prepared for, due to some major over commitment by the chorus to performing with several other local orchestral groups over the months of April and May (with 4 different performances/productions within just 7 weeks, including Carmina Burana, Mahler's 2nd Symphony, an incredibly difficult large-scale work by Poulenc called "Stabat Mater", plus Turandot). If anyone doubts me, the schedule is still HERE on our chorus website. Carmina has fallen off the chorus website's calendar, but it was the weekend of April 8th-10th (still HERE on the symphony's website though). Turandot was the rockiest of all the four productions, with something like 60 separate choral music entrances, and only one "working" rehearsal with the orchestra before opening night (plus a dress rehearsal where we never went back and worked on problems, due to time constraints). We literally spent the hour before the performance re-reviewing the choral parts for all three acts, and then -- I kid you not -- spent each of the two 20-minute intermissions (which were drug out to probably 25-minutes), re-reviewing all of the music for the 2nd and 3rd acts, up until literally the minute before we walked on stage. (And by "re-reviewing", I mostly mean "learning" -- if not for the first time, then certainly "re-learning" at best). The conductor himself had to drag us on stage, away from our "mid-act" rehearsals. It was a pretty damn scary performance, but we got through it without any major train wrecks at least. (Whew!!!) Then my wife and I were in St. Louis for about 6 days over Memorial Day weekend, visiting my Dad. Since the homes tour, and especially since Turandot, I haven't felt much like doing anything, really, and I'm only now just beginning to come out of the fog. I've glanced at the board a time or two, and I'm still buried under a mountain of unread e-mail and unresponded to PM's. I know I'm still way behind on managing my BFT, and for that I'm really, really sorry. My life has been more than a little out of control for the last two months (and arguably for the last 2 years, but I won't go into that here and now). Yes, I still have a handful of BFT's I still need to mail out (about six I think), and I hope to get to that soon. My sincerest apologies for all the headaches, and all I can ask for is your patience in letting me try to get back on track as best I can. Thanks... Rooster T.
