When I saw this thread, I was gonna say the exact same thing. Beat me to the punch.

Very interesting!! More of the same, maybe from the same remix artist, here: http://www.djbc.net/mashes/ A whole bunch, actually --- haven't listened to all of them yet, but here's an interesting one... Link: Hotbreaker (.mp3) which includes... Led Zep - Heartbreaker Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - Heatwave Mos Def - Summertime Lou Donaldson - Ode To Billie Joe

I'm sure I could scare up copies of both of them here in Kansas City, with relative ease. Any preference for new or used copies?? I'm sure I've seen both of them at a handful of stores here in KC, since Eldar lived here from the time he was 10 or 12, until he was about 17 or 18 -- and both CD's were recorded here. In fact, the rest of his rhythm section on both dates, are two guys I've known for years -- Gerald Spaits (ba) and Todd Straight (d). Todd is on Eldar's Sony release too, which is a nice bit of continuity. (FYI, both Todd and Gerald are absolute top-tier players here in KC, with Todd literally being the best of the best.)

Lookin For Lou Donaldson Live Bootlegs
Rooster_Ties replied to Soul Stream's topic in Offering and Looking For...
IMHO, call 'em "private recordings" - or else "gray market material". I haven't used the term "bootlegs" since I was in high school and college (late 80's, early 90's), when what I was out for was just that - boots on vinyl (at first) and then late silver-disc CD's -- of otherwise unreleased material. I don't even call my silver-disc Miles CD's bootlegs either. I've allways called that sort of thing "gray market" material (as opposed to "black market"). I know, "gray market" is probably my own made-up term -- and I'd be curious if anyone else here has heard that term, or uses it themselves. -
BFT#25, bonus discs: WOODY SHAW, 18-JAN-1983
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
That's why I couldn't resist including this date with my BFT. I knew it would be a pain in the ass to send out -- not one -- but TWO bonus discs. BUT, I also knew that this particular date was absolutely worth all the extra hassle, every damn bit of it. -
BFT#25, bonus discs: WOODY SHAW, 18-JAN-1983
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
Just bumping this one up, in case anyone has had the chance to spin the bonus Woody Shaw concert I sent out with my BFT. -
Checks and Paypal are my two favorite payment options, speaking as a buyer. I've not very likely to give out my credit card number to just anybody (though in your case, Chuck, that certainly wouldn't be a problem). But if you were just some random eBay seller I didn't know (are barely knew), there isn't a chance in hell I'd give you my credit card number, unless I had a whole bunch of previous buying experience with you. For all their supposed problems, Paypal's benefits are pretty nice -- in having a way to pay for things, without having to give the world my credit card number. (Still, I don't trust Paypal enough to give them my bank account numbers - so I guess I'm just a bit of a paranoid kind of guy. )

Opinions on Acquiring OOP Mosaics
Rooster_Ties replied to md655321's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Personally, I don't think there's a lot wrong with downloading OOP music, especially if one tries to obtain legit copies over time, to replace the illegit downloads. For instance, if I were in your shoes -- I'd probably go ahead and download the Andrew Hill Mosaic, but then I'd be sure I bought legit copies off eBay, or from other after-market sources, like half.com, or from trading on boards like this (and I mean trading legit copies). And I'd make it my goal to get legit copies of everything I could -- within about the next year's time. Most of the Hill set is (or was) available on CD domestically, and "Andrew!!!" is scheduled to be a Conn in October (2005). That would leave only about three albums' worth of material that couldn't be gotten legitimately. And over time, those three will be released as Conns too -- and I'd be to buy them as the came out. Long story short, personally I don't have any problem with burning and downloading OOP music -- but I think one does have an obligation to try to obtain legit copies of the same material within a reasonable amount of time, at least of any of the material that's been released as individual CD's within the last 10 years. Now, OOP stuff on LP that's NEVER been released on CD -- that's an entirely different story. That stuff, IMHO, is pretty much fair game, with the caveat that if it ever gets released on CD -- you should have the moral obligation to buy the CD issue, or else get rid of your burn of the LP. IMHO, it ain't cool to have burns of formerly OOP LP's, that have since been reissued on CD. I'm sure others here will have a variety of opinions, and I'm not saying mine are "right". I thinks what I thinks, them there's what I think. -
BFT #25, disc #1 (#2?) - track sequence problems
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
FWIW, I burned everything at 8x burn speed, the fastest my circa-2000 PC's CD-ROM drive will do. I've never had any problem with any discs I've burned playing on all my other disc players, with but maybe one or two very minor exceptions (out of hundreds of discs). I wonder if those who are having troubles playing their discs, would try reburning them themselves -- from the source disc they already have. Worth a try, maybe?? -
Gack for me too. How 'bout "Tex Book Depository"? That's pure evil, Joe. I'm laughing my ass off now about it, but it's pure evil.

an interesting deal in the works...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Or both!!! -
Let's start another (new) thread asking for ideas. If we can all get around one or two, maybe we can get Kevin to plant the idea(s) in Michael's ear. Can't imagine "Tex Book Tenor" is set in stone yet, though who knows? PS: I would think we'd need to get something decided on this within the next few weeks, at the very latest.

Well, pretty much anything and everything they played on together in the 60's is worth getting. Not sure off the top of my head what else there is besides those you listed, but it's ALL good. Then there's this one from 1991... Link: New York Reunion It's a little too "every musician in their own, separate, enclosed sound booth" for my tastes -- but there's much to like about it too. It's not that it's the least bit bad -- but somehow, I always wish it had much more of a "live" feel. Everyone plays well, but it's all just a little "too perfect" sounding, if you know what I mean. Get everything they're both on from the 60's first. Edit: I see sal beat me to the punch by a few seconds.

Both are pretty nice as is, specially that Japanese "Consequence" cover, which I'm assuming is the original "King" cover. Some of those Kings were pretty sweet!!
-
Pardon, but I'm rather uninformed about quite a few BN titles that are pre-1955. Have either or both of these Elmo Hope titles been on CD before?? If so, where?? Can't imagine in the U.S. - otherwise there's no chance they'd be Conns (or else this'd be the first Conn ever that'd been released stateside before). I'm guessing they've been out in Japan before.

I've got an interesting deal going with someone here on the board, for a Mosaic set I've been thinking about selling. And I suggested a crazy idea for how to arrive at a value for the thing, and much to my surprise - the other guy said yes. There's a copy of the very same set on eBay right now, that closes within a week or less. I won't mention which set, since I don't want to unduely influence the bidding on the set that's on eBay. And the reason I say that is... We agreed that the purchase price would be 70% of whatever the closing price on eBay was (for the set that's up right now), plus actual shipping expenses. My logic was that I'd get a pretty fair price for the set (which is in near mint condition), and he'd get a "fair"-er price than he'd get if I had listed the set on eBay, and he tried to buy it that way. (Plus, this way eBay doesn't get a cut.) I was never too comfortable asking a hell of a lot for the set here on the board, but deep down - I was kinda wanting a good price for the set (say, something in the range of $30 per disc, or something pretty close to that, hopefully). Not sure how absolutely "fair" this will turn out to be (I suppose it'll be out of our hands -- since neither of us will be trying to influence the bidding on the set). And I suppose if the bidding gets "stupid, crazy" high -- then other guy can always bail on the deal. And if the bidding ends up "stupid, crazy" low -- then maybe I'll bail too (or ask for a bit more). But as long as the set comes in around what it usually does of late, I think both of us will end up happy. Probably no point in me starting this thread, other than to say that I thought this was an interesting way to figure out a price for something. Just HOW interesting, though, I guess remains to be seen... I'll let you all know how it turns out when the bidding on the item closes on eBay, sometime within the next week or so.

But what if it isn't him??? Any chance, Jim, that your opinion of the track could be influenced a bit by who you think it is?? Edit: Or maybe it is him. Or then again, maybe it really isn't!!
-
As far as track #1 goes, it'd be interesting for people to take a stab at when they think it might have been composed (what year, or decade). The key is in the 2nd-half of the solo-piano interlude part (starting around the 1:05 mark). Or maybe just answering the question, who does it sound like??
-
And who might that be???
-
That's quite a bunch of new covers they're gonna hafta design, ain't it?? By my count, the following three titles will all need new designs, right??? Booker Ervin - Tex Book Tenor - 5 tracks Jackie McLean - Consequence - 6 tracks Ike Quebec - The Complete 45 Sessions (2 CDs) - 26 tracks Last time around, they could only do one Conn that needed new cover art ("Dance With Death"), because of the expense involved (and you might recall, that's why the Booker Ervin got pushed out another year -- they couldn't afford two new covers in the same batch/year). Have I got that right?? -- these three (above) will all need new covers, and the other three won't -- correct?? I'm in a bit of a rush at the moment -- can somebody post images of the covers of the other three?? Thanks!!!!

BFT #25, disc #1 (#2?) - track sequence problems
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
By the way, the sequencing of my BFT (at least disc #1, especially), is probably critical to the enjoyment of it, over all. Jim (Sangry), and Big (Al) -- somehow I need to set you two up with new burns, cuz some of what you did or didn't like -- may sound quite a bit different to you with the proper sequencing, trust me. I'm absolutely swamped this week -- can anybody else set Jim and Al up with new burns of at least the two BFT discs (with the proper sequence)??? And before you do, can you confirm that what you have as source discs matches the above track sequencing??? I sure hope this is an isolated instance, with just this leg of the tree. Catesta - did I somehow send you discs with the wrong sequence?? (Can you check the originals I sent you??) Or was there some SNAFU with the process you used to burn them?? (I'd be more worried if I somehow sent you discs with the wrong order.) Ironically, Jim and Al are reporting back things that imply that each of them has a different track order -- different from one another. -
BFT #25, disc #1 (#2?) - track sequence problems
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
OK, maybe the problem is limited to just this leg of the distribution... The two people who appear to have scrambled tracks are Big Al and Jsngry. (Note: It looks like Golden Arm Man is gonna have problems too.) Could this be the problem??? If anybody else has any track order problems, let me know (with a post to this thread), ASAP. Thanks!!!! -
OK, I've had two different people report back about their BFT#25, disc #1, and clearly the track order that they have is different than the order that I burned for people. I don't yet know if this is an isolated instance of just one part of the tree, of it there is a bigger problem. ( ) I'll try to figure that out shortly (give me a couple minutes) Those of you who already have my BFT, should have the following track order… Track 1 (1:31) – an orchestral track with solo piano that follows. Track 2 (1:55) – a solo piano track Track 3 (6:22) – an orchestral track with solo trumpet over the top Track 4 (7:15) – a funky backbeat sort of thing with guitar and sax Track 5 (3:24) – a more jazz-oriented feature with static harmony (few if any “changes”), and sax as the main soloist Track 6 (3:33) – an electronic jazz thing with trumpet as the main soloist Track 7 (7:22) – sax, piano, bass, drums – a mid-tempo tune Track 8 (6:33) – trumpet, sax, piano, bass, drums, more of a traditional jazz thing – trumpet and sax have equal prominence (but no solos, as such), and with one piano solo Track 9 (1:46) – solo trumpet (muted) Track 10 (0:22)– shortest track on the disc, at only 22 seconds Track 11 (3:19) – mainstream jazz thing with trumpet, sax, piano, bass, drums Track 12 (6:38) – piano trio thing Track 13 (3:33) – trumpet and drums Track 14 (7:02) – sax, trumpet, guitar, piano, bass, drums – pretty straight ahead Track 15 (4:55) – sax, guitar, bass, drums – a ballad Track 16 (12:40) – trumpet, piano, bass, drums – a little out there at times Can you report back immediately to this thread if your BFT#25, disc #1 doesn't match???

What the hell was the name of the game where you spun around in a various multi-sided tube, and fired down the tube at various bad things. It was a vector-game, and the controler was a nob that you turned to go clockwise or counter-clockwise around the tube. I've been racking my brain for 2 minutes trying to think of it, so I can find some on-line version. Man, there were SO many fun games back then. What was also fun, were the illegal knock-offs of games that you occasionally would find. I'm talking full-size stand-up bootleg versions of other legit stand-up arcade games. I remember there was a knock-off of Phoenix at this one bowling alley near where my grandma lived, and it was even better than the legit version!! I seem to remember a knock-off of Donkey Kong too that was a lot of fun, if only because the graphics were a little crappier, and it was fun trying to notice all the visual problems with the game that they never bothered to get right. It might have been called Crazy Kong, now that I think of it. Or was that some other legit Donkey Kong spin-off?? (After a while, it got really hard to keep track of all the spin-offs.) Oh, the many hours, and hours, and hours (and quarters!!!!) of my mispent youth!!!
