  1. So many games that I played in my youth. I never owned a home video game system, other than the games I had on my Apple IIe (though I did have a bunch of games on it). But I especially remember playing hour, after hour, after hour -- on the coin-op versions of many of these games. I would spend $5 and $10 a session sometimes. Defender, Zaxxon(!!), Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede(!!), Phoenix, and so many more. Oh, the memories!!!!
  2. Nothing to add, other than I think this would be an excellent question.
  3. Just bumping this up for the morning crowd. Thanks!!!
  4. Howdy everybody, Quick question. Anybody know of an on-line map-generator where you can denote multiple locations on the same map?? And by multiple, I mean like a total of 8 or 9 different locations (all within the same one-square-mile area). And I’m needing something within about the next 12 hours, if at all possible. I'm trying to create a map for our neighborhood’s “historic homes and gardens tour” program/booklet (that's supposed to go to the printers tomorrow!!), and we need to be able to denote the various locations of the homes and gardens on the tour. Short of printing a map off Mapquest, and marking the thing up by hand (pen and ink), and then rescanning it in -- I'm hoping for something where I can key multiple addresses into it, and generate the map. Don’t need to draw routes (driving instructions) between the locations, I just need to put 8 or 9 stars on the same map. (Preferably with street-names and such, like on most maps from Mapquest, Yahoomaps, etc...) Thanks a bunch!!!
  5. I wouldn't mind reading more about Andrew Hill (big surprise there ). Maybe a full-length bio really isn't realistic (and perhaps not even reasonable). But I could really go for an in-depth chapter-length kinda thing -- maybe 20 or 25 pages in length. Larry Young's another one I could stand a good chapter-length write-up about. Maybe Joe Henderson?? (Again, probably chapter-length.)
  6. Link: Bombay the Hard Way, Vol. 2: Electric Vindaloo Electric Vindaloo... More samples at the link above.
  7. Link: Bombay The Hard Way: Guns, Cars And Sitars With sound samples!!! From the samples I just heard, this shit might just be half-baad!!!
  8. By the way, I went ahead and started the discussion threads, including one for the Woody Shaw date. They can be found here... BFT#25, disc #1 - discussion!!!, The "serious" disc... BFT#25, disc #2 - discussion!!!, The "fun" disc... BFT#25, bonus concert: WOODY SHAW, 18-JAN-1983, discussion and discographical info... Have a great weekend eveybody!!
  9. And I am hereby opening up the discussion for BFT#25, disc #2!! Just in case there is any confusion, disc #2 has 13 tracks (and disc #1 has 16 tracks). If you only provide commentary for one of the discs, please do so for disc #1 – the more "serious" of the two discs. Disc #2 is more of a "fun" mix disc that I thought people might like and/or at least find interesting. Disc #2 is mostly made up of cuts I didn't have room to include on disc #1. And I'll leave it to all of you to decide if there is any sort of theme or not, and if so - what it might be. Have fun!!!
  10. OK, I am hereby opening up the discussion for BFT#25, and this here is the thread for disc #1!! Just in case there is any confusion, disc #1 has 16 tracks (and disc #2 only has 13 tracks). If you only provide commentary for one of the discs, please do so for disc #1 – the more "serious" of the two discs. (Disc #2 is more of a "fun" mix disc that I thought people might like and/or at least find interesting. Yes, I will be starting a separate thread for disc #2.) I think some of the tracks on disc #1 are guessable by a number of people around here, but hopefully just as many will be open to some debate, and maybe some dissent too!! But as you all know – it's not just about guessing who the musicians might be, but rather describing the music and your reactions to it -- good and bad!! Let the games begin!! Edit: A suggestion I posted below... As far as track #1 goes, it'd be interesting for people to take a stab at when they think it might have been composed (what year, or decade). The key is in the 2nd-half of the solo-piano interlude part (starting around the 1:05 mark). Or maybe just answering the question, who does it sound like??
  11. Really?? Nothing wrong with show-biz?? So if a guy – or rather a band - plays three sets in one night... Excuse me - I mean three "shows" ...then one shouldn't be surprised if all three "shows" have identical set-lists?? (Or I guess they should be called "show-lists" then. ) Or even the same for just two "shows" in one night?? I can understand repeating a tune or two across "shows" (especially if a couple of them are signature tunes). That's to be expected. But to repeat the same set show again, with all of the exact same tunes (and in the same order ) -- seems pretty darn lazy if you ask me. Do these musicians not know any standards?? Also begs the question, do they play the exact same show, every night, in every town, night after night?? Is the order of the solos identical every night?? Are the solos particularly similar from "show" to "show"??? Doesn't seem to be what jazz is all about. The idea of a "show" somehow seems more appropriate for a cabaret act or something -- not jazz. I mean, it's not like there's some elaborate light show that has to be synched to the music.
  12. MartyJazz was kind enough to provide me with some discographical info for the Woody Shaw date that I sent out as a bonus with BFT#25. FYI, I'll create the real BFT discussion threads later tonight (I'm in a bit of a rush at the moment). I don't have anything particularly profound to say about this Woody Shaw date, other than I think it's one of THE very best performances I've ever heard from Woody -- and more generally speaking, I think the entire band is on fire (especially Mulgrew Miller). I also have a soft spot for "trumpet plus piano trio" recordings. Hope everyone enjoys this extra Woody Shaw concert -- it's one of my all-time favorite "unreleased" live dates -- and I'd love to hear what people think of it. (And amazing as the performance is, the sound quality is pretty "top-drawer" too.) Rooster T.
  13. FWIW, nearly everyone who offered to be a distributor for my BFT, became one. This meant a few more mailings for me, but given the large number of discs I'm asking people to burn (four CD's per mailing), I thought I'd try not to lean on anyone, any more than I had to. Apologies to the European folks -- there were fewer distribution offers, so your distribution lists are a little bit longer than the U.S. folks.
  14. First thing I thought of when I read the title of this thread, was Charles Ives.
  15. Hi everyone, Through PM's, I've already heard from a handful of the distributors that they got their discs (which I sent out last over week), and that they are now in the process of burning copies, and sending them out to their distribution lists. If you are a distributor, or just a participant -- please check in here (this thread) when you get your discs. Thanks!!! If anyone didn't sign up earlier, a number of distributors said they would be happy to burn and distribute more copies -- just say the word!!! Send me a PM if you would still like a copy, and haven't signed up yet. I still have a small handful of the individual discs to send out (meaning the one's that come with a free disc from the "Pay If Forward" thread, but those will go out tomorrow or Thursday. Note: ALL of the distributor discs were sent last week, so the ball is definitely (finally!!) rolling on BFT#25. FYI, I will open up the discussion threads as soon as two people, from two different distribution lists indicate that they've gotten their discs. The first BFT disc is the "serious" one, where people get to tell what they think about the tunes, and who they think the musicians could be (or who they sound like, at least). The second BFT disc is just a fun disc that I thought people would like. If you don't have time to offer your thoughts about both discs, the first disc is really the more important one, and the one I'm looking for feedback about. (And just in case the discs get mislabeled by any of the distributors, the second disc is the one that starts with a modern big-band number.) BTW, here is the master distribution list I put together, FYI... U.S. -- gslade (OR) - can help distribute 1. danasgoodstuff (OR) 2. alejo (WA) -- RDK (CA) - can help distribute 1. Adam (CA) 2. 16. Does Vogon poetry figure into the plot at all, or get any mention??
  17. As is often the case, I think Sangry summed it up best for me too. On a side note, I have a cousin I only talk with a couple times a year (I only see him in person about twice a decade - as he lives on the West Coast) - and two or three times we've tried to have some jazz-related discussions. Trouble is that we come at the subject from radically different angles. He always mentions Spyro Gyra, and often The Yellowjackets too, etc... Both are bands I have little interest in at all. They're nowhere near as evil as, say, Kenny G. - but neither band is anything I personally find very interesting. But they both float my cousin's boat quite nicely. As you can imagine, it's pretty hard to have a very lengthy jazz conversation with him. Of course, I'm part of the problem too (so it's not all his fault) - as he also likes modern, very "straight-ahead" big-band jazz too -- another area I don't have a ton of interest in. Another area where there are plenty of people that do what they do very well, but like Spyro Gyra, I just don't care for what they do all that much.
  18. LOVED the books in my younger days, though I haven't read any of them in well over 10 years. Can't imagine any movie doing justice to the books -- but I suppose stranger things have happened. But if I read enough positive reviews in this thread, I'll probably give it a go.
  19. Hasaan was my first thought too. Valdo Williams was my second.
