Unissued BN session: Grant Green w/John Gilmore
Rooster_Ties replied to jasonguthartz's topic in Discography
I hear what you're sayin' Jim, and looking again at the players, I think I'm with you on this one. Would certainly be one of the few dates Grand Green ever did with an "outside"-leaning player like Gilmore. -
Complete Bill Evans on Verve
Rooster_Ties replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I was thinking of selling my copy of the Evans box, either here on the board, or maybe on eBay (it's near mint, except for a couple minor scuffs on a couple of the discs, and the usual rust). BUT, it looks like maybe I may be able to trade it to a local friend of mine, for $150 credit at his vintage furniture store (towards a couple vintage chairs I've really got my eyes on). I was hoping to get about $175 for it on eBay, and figured it'd cost me about $25 in postage and eBay fees, so I'd be lucky to net around $150. If the deal with the furniture-store guy falls through, anybody interested in my Evans box for $150 plus actual postage costs?? (Don't know what postage would be, but I'm guessing around $15, maybe $20 at most.) PM me if you're interested (although I'm gonna go with the local guy at the funature store, if it turns out he's interested). Thanks!! -
Cornet, Trumpet, what's the difference?
Rooster_Ties replied to Popper Lou's topic in Musician's Forum
Thanks for that link. The majority of the Pocket Trumpet I've heard over the years has been from Don Cherry, so the player probably is the biggest variable. In particular, I'm thinking of Cherry on mutet pocket trumpet (especially during the last 10 years of his life). Ain't nothin' like I never heard on no regular trumpet, that's for sure. Probably the player, more than the horn. (Hell, maybe I've even heard some other guys on pocket trumpet, and didn't even realize what it was I was listening to. ) -
That's my beef too. Good stuff, but he could kick it up a notch -- more like he always delivers in concert.
-
I'm thinkin' about maybe selling off a box set or two, including maybe my Don Cherry Mosaic. Anybody know what the going rate is these days for the Cherry?? No 'closed' auctions on eBay at the moment. I'm lookin' to raise some cash, so I may go the eBay route (I've never sold on eBay before, this'd be my first time -- I've bought plenty there, though ). If there's interest, I may offer the set here first.

Cornet, Trumpet, what's the difference?
Rooster_Ties replied to Popper Lou's topic in Musician's Forum
Would love to hear more about the pocket trumpet. I don't have any specific questions (don't know enough to know what to ask), other than I'm surprised to learn that the length of the tubing is the same as a standard trumpet, etc... My surprise stems not so much from the relative size of the instruments, but rather from the wildly (to my ears) different sound that pockets seem to make, vs. standard trumpets. Or are my ears on crooked again?? Edit: I always thought pocket trumpets were pitched higher than standard trumpets. (Or maybe they are?? - reguardless of having the same length of tubing?? ) Like I said, I don't know all that much about the mechanics of brass instruments. -
Unissued BN session: Grant Green w/John Gilmore
Rooster_Ties replied to jasonguthartz's topic in Discography
I do think that sways his decision, but he's got ears too. If it was rejected, often there was a good reason. (though sometimes not.) Chuck will chime in here in a minute, and say that we have no right to hear everything ever recorded, and that not every date is successful enough to release. And when he does, I'll probably agree with him. That said, I'm all for Michael revisiting rejected dates (even dates he's already rejected himself), and reconsidering them with fresh ears. Maybe even getting some other ears to listen to them too (Bob Beldon, etc...) But some stuff we ain't never gonna hear, and there's usually a good reason for it. -
I've heard Garrett play live at least twice, maybe three times if I remember right. And I've always been blown away, close to 100%. Less so on records, but always a lot there to like too -- even if not in as much abundance as on the live dates I've been to and heard. I've had and heard a number of Garrett CD's over the years, and I've always liked 'em. Just didn't love 'em enough to want to get the man's entire catalog, if you know what I mean.

Unissued BN session: Grant Green w/John Gilmore
Rooster_Ties replied to jasonguthartz's topic in Discography
According to the complete BN discography (2001 edition, page 163), there were a total of five tunes recorded, as follows... Untitled Grant Green Tune No.3 Minor League Grant's Tune Un Poco Loco Ezz-thetic All are listed as "rejected". Surely if some of this material were worth being released, a tune or two would have seen the light of day as part of the "Lost Sessions" release a few years back, or in some other form over the years. Looks great on paper, sure, and I'm all for asking Michael to revisit the tapes (paging Kevin!!). But I'm not holding my breath. It'd probably already be out by now, if it were worth releasing. -
Holy shit!! I've already got a TOCJ of the Roach, but I never dreamed we get anything from Water that had been previously released on CD in Japan. VERY good news.

Rooster's BFT #25, questions and logistics only...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
Link: Rooster's official "BFT #25" sign-up thread, will also include 2 rare "bonus" CD's -
FWIW, "Speak Like a Child" is my all-time favorite Herbie album. (And I normally go for more bombastic, horn-centric albums.) "The Prisoner" comes in a close 2nd.

Hi everybody!!! I probably should have gotten this thread started last week, but things got busy. I've got TWO discs full of great BFT selections, plus a 2-hour unreleased concert (so two more discs), that are all looking for happy homes. I've also noticed on a few trade-lists recently, that the unreleased concert I'll be sending is something some of you already have. So, I should probably let the cat out of the bag about it here and now (see below). If you already have a copy of this date, please let me know in your sign-up post, and also your PM to me, along with your snail-mail address. Woody Shaw Quartet, Bremen, 18-JAN-1983 (2CD's) with Woody Shaw, Mulgrew Miller, Stafford James, and Tony Reedus (two discs, almost 2 hours of music) This is some of THE best Woody Shaw I've ever heard. He's on fire, all night long, as is the entire band. (Some amazing Mulgrew too.) Note: Some of you have already signed-up for my BFT, by way of asking for something in the "Pay It Forward"/"Free-Stuff" thread from a couple weeks back (I said I'd include my BFT discs, as long as I was sending stuff). I'll be compiling a list of those people, and posting it here by the end of the day (probably late tonight). And some of you have already signed up to distribute (via my "BFT #25 Logistics" thread). I'll compile a list of those folks too, and post it here in this thread -- again, probably late tonight. (If you'd like to help by being a distributor, please let me know ASAP. Those who have already told me they'd help, thanks a bunch!!!) I’ll edit this first post, in both cases, to provide that info for you -- so look up here at the beginning of this thread for these lists. My goal is to send out source-discs to all the distributors by the end of the week (meaning by this Friday, or by Monday at the very latest). Is there anything else I’m forgetting???

What I'd about kill to hear, is Herbie live in 1969, with "The Prisoner" band. The RVG talks about that band doing some live gigs, including Joe Henderson. I'd move heaven and earth to hear some of that stuff.

who sells Fresh Sound cds in the USA?
Rooster_Ties replied to Jazztropic's topic in Offering and Looking For...
If you're looking for FSNT discs, some of the artists themselves are selling direct through their web-sites. Often the artist get's more of a cut that way (or so I'd guess), and shipping is WAY cheaper than getting them from Europe. -
I always check twice a year, like clockwork.

Organissimo opening for Joey DeFrancesco
Rooster_Ties replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Because he brings out the best in Chuck?? -
Sangry's choice of words ("2nd-tier"), might have been better phrasing than mine. I guess people here have more negative connotations associated with the term "2nd rate" than I do. I always thought 2nd-rate wasn't as good as 1st-rate, but 2nd-rate wasn't always "bad" either -- just not as good (or, in this case, not as great!!). (In other words, this whole thing may just be a matter of semantics.) Then again, if I gave everything letter grades, like this... Miles circa 1967 = A+ Kenny Cox circa 1968-69 = B/B+ I'd probably get shit about that too.

Rooster_Ties replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Wow -- Great Googly Moogly!! VERY cool. -
I don't find them to be as successful as the original, "Miles circa 1967" material -- which they are plainly trying to emulate. The soloists aren't as nuanced (IMHO), and they don't have as much punch for me as the Miles material (EDIT: or highly developed group interaction). BUT, I think they are an eminently 'competent' attempt at the same kind of material, both in terms of performance, and composition.
-
Maybe I should have said "A little 2nd rate...". Basically I was trying to agree with Sangry's assessment -- that they're not showstoppers, but they are still valuable, and that I like 'em.

No punishment is strong enough, for anyone who uses the term "jazzsters" in print.
