  1. Everyone except Michael...
  2. I heard he's grounded until the year 2045.
  3. seller must have wised up, it's now going for $44.00 ... Nope, somebody bought the cheap one. There were three copies there earlier, two with $40+ prices, and one for $5.99 (which is now gone). Somebody here got it. Who???
  4. Holy crap, what are the odds?? Probably not the same guy, but with a name as unique as "Valdo", maybe it really is him. Hmmmmm.......
  5. Just spotted a used copy of this on Amazon for only $5.99, plus shipping. Don't know anything about the seller, so all the usual disclaimers apply. CLICKY LINKY Enjoy!! Edit: audio samples from Amazon
  6. By the way, I never did get back to posting in this thread after I got this on disc. GREAT session. Very loose and tight, all at the same time. Exceeded my expectations by quite a margin. Wish there was more by Williams, especially as a sideman with other interesting players. Reminds me of Hasaan Ibn Ali, a bit, and not just cuz they're both obscure.
  7. Greg, I can get the boys a great gig here in Kansas City, a slam dunk. (Don't know if the pay will be great, but the best venue in KC, without a doubt.) And I have connections (with connections) for a gig in Columbia, MO, and maybe Lincoln, NB. Lawrence, KS maybe too (one hour west KC). Might be able to put you in touch with some contacts in Minneapolis / St. Paul too. Musicians mostly, who might have some good suggestions for you for the Twin Cities.
  8. Didn't we used to have a thread of things we never thought we'd hear each other say?? Maybe I'm imagining that, but if not, this surely belongs in there!!
  9. This probably isn't the thread to ask this in, but maybe it is -- and here goes... Michael, I understand the need for both scholarly significance, but also for books that are "readable" (for lack of a better term). I'm curious if you've ever read any of the Phaidon books on 20th Century Classical Composers (there are about 20 of them, last time I checked, maybe closer to 25 -- and I own about 15 total). The whole serious was supposed to be something like 50 books long. (Haven’t seen any new ones in ages, though. ) Phaidon · 20TH CENTURY COMPOSERS · Series Jean Sibelius Hindemith, Hartmann and Henze (scroll down a bit) György Ligeti (scroll down a bit) Sergey Prokofiev Carl Nielsen (scroll down a bit) (Many more in the serious, but these were some that had images and mini-reviews I could easy post links to here.) I'm wondering (Michael) what you think of them, generally, in terms of their value (not financial value, but value as books - as resources, but also as something the public can read). Personally, I find them (meaning this particular Phaidon series) to be as good as any I've seen, in terms of both 1) readability (having a narrative style that draws one in, and tells what could easily be a very dry story, in an interesting way); and 2) schollarly value (assuming they are factually accurate, which I'm assuming they are - though I don't have anything to back that up one way or another). The musical analysis isn’t the most technical, but it isn’t vacuous either. A nice, happy, medium – and it serves a need in the marketplace. Isn't there room for some kind of happy medium like this??? - where some scholarly needs can be met, but without the result being a doctoral thesis?? I realize that there's a place for doctoral theses, and I'm not knocking them one bit. But there's a place for good writing too (yes, that’s factually accurate, sure!!), but that also helps draw the reader in, and that doesn't bore them to tears. Ideally, I'm looking for BOTH. Hard to find, I know. But that's the optimum solution, in my book (pun intended)
  10. This is one of those cases where it doesn't matter what the hell I say about it, or what I think about it -- nothing I do or say or think will change anything about the outcome of events. I have purposefully avoided all media accounts of the Blake case (or as many as I could avoid), and so too with the Michael Jackson case, and the Kobe Bryant case, and the OJ case. NONE of them matter a hill of beans in my life, and the less time I spend worrying about them, the better. Maybe Blake did it, maybe he didn't. Maybe his money bought his freedom, or maybe he really was innocent. I don't know the truth, none of us ever will, and I really don't care.
  11. Currently, I'd say my all-time favorites are Woody Shaw, Andrew Hill, and Joe Henderson. And Miles, of course, too. But the guys I'm most passionate about these dates are Woody Shaw and Andrew Hill -- especially Woody.
  12. And equally a pitty that Phil Ranelin wasn't included in the tribute to Detroit show. They do have Curtis Fuller (so they did want trombone) -- BUT, with Marcus Belgrave on the date, having Marcus and Phil together should have been a no-brainer. I mean, lord, I don't think there's a single Tribe recording that one is on without the other. Having Phil on that bill, should have made all the sense in the world. He could have sure used the bread too, I suspect.
  13. 2 down, 8 more to go...
  14. Whoa, down Chuck!!! Greg is a good friend and our new manager! Welcome!! B-) Yeah, but Greg still has to post 9 more times before he can sell anything here, right??
  15. I've still got this on my plate too. I've given both discs one spin each -- just within the last 48 hours -- and I've been good and haven't looked at the discussions already (other than occasionally checking to see if the discussion was almost done ). I hope to post my thoughts on BFT#24 (part 1 & 2) by the end of the week.
  16. Music by Bill Lee, interesting...
  17. Got this in the mail yesterday, and really appreciate having my own copy finally, after having borrowed it from a friend a few times. One of Mehldau's most interesting releases, IMHO - though I realize some don't like the electronics and such. Thanks Gary!!
  18. Got this in the mail on Saturday, and am enjoying as I'm typing this. Good stuff!! Thanks AB!!!
  19. Me too. The KOB tune with the most "attitude". B-)
  20. What is the relative cost of the war in Iraq, vs. the annual budget for NASA?? And what will be the total cost of the war in Iraq (let's say up to ten years), vs. the total of NASA budgets for those same ten years?? It's all a matter of priorities.
  21. How did shrinkwrap "accommodate" said "rackjobbers"?? Or, maybe this'll clear up my confusion -- what (or who) was a "rackjobber"?? Thanks.
  22. I thought the commercial was a very effective and persuasive argument about the horrors of landmines. It is absolutely shameful that the U.S. hasn't signed the antipersonnel mine-ban treaty. Link: http://www.stoplandmines.org (the sponsor of the ad, mentioned at the very end) Perhaps this thread would be better suited for the Politics forum.
  23. OK, other than fixing levels, and maybe a tiny edit or two here and there -- I'm pretty much done picking out music for my 2nd BFT disc. I'll start a brand new thread for sign-ups sometime early in the week. I've already got a number of people on the list (from the "paying it forward" thread, people I owe "free" discs too), so I'll post their names in the new "sign-up" thread, as soon as I start it. If anyone else wants to help distribute this puppy, go head and let me know here in this thread -- and BIG thanks to those who have already agreed to help with distributing. (Remember, there's gonna be a total of FOUR discs for each mailing, between my two BFT discs, and the two-disc unreleased live concert.) This is gonna be fun. B-)
