Wife's out of town for work since yesterday (get's back tomorrow night), so I usually end up burning the midnight oil even more than usual when she's gone. Went out to hear some live music earlier tonight, but it wasn't happenin' for them, or for me - can't tell for sure which (though I do think it was them), and I left after half a set (their 2nd set - so it wasn't that they weren't warmed up). No cover charge, so no harm - no foul. Probably be up another hour or so.

"Yo, Miles" - and other Electric Miles tributes
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Oh, and what are the earliest examples of people covering electric Miles tunes??? I know Eddie Henderson was practically THE earliest master at taking Miles' electric concepts (on trumpet in particular, but also replicating the whole concept/context as well -- thought not exactly, putting his on spin on things, somewhat), and running with them. (FWIW, I absolutely love Henderson's first two dates on Capricorn - both from 1973). But in terms of actually covering tunes that Miles first played between 1969 and 1975, what were some of the first such interpretations?? That said, I guess this probably is as good a thread as any to discuss Eddie Henderson and any other folks who have outright copped Miles electric-era style. -
AMG reviews: First One, Second One (no review), Third One (crap, no review either) Just picked up the latest (third) "Yo Miles!" release today -- called "Upriver". I loved the first "Yo Miles!" release from like 1998 (god, has it really been that long ago?? ), and I never dreamed there'd be not one -- but TWO more double-CD's of material by this group (basically Henry Kaiser, Wadada Leo Smith, and a round-robin cavalcade of others -- particularly Greg Osby). All three "Yo Miles!" releases have had over 150 minutes of music each -- so we're talkin' a total of almost 8 hours of music. (And no, quantity is definitely not more important than quality. But quality in this quantity is rare, I will say that.) I dare say that I think much of this material is every bit as good as the original, and in a few cases - even surpassing the original ( ). I've loaned out that first "Yo Miles!" release to a couple different people, as a sort of more focused primer for Miles' electric era (more focused than the original, to some extent). (IMHO, I should say.) Don't get me wrong -- I love the original (Miles from 1969-1975), and I've got a ton of it. But sometimes, I do think I get a little more of what I love about the original, per-square-inch, in these "Yo Miles!" dates --- than I do in some of the original Miles recordings ( ). Several other electric-era Miles tributes over the last 10 years or so (not many before that, that I'm aware of though). What are your favorites?? What have fallen short of the mark?? What have been the most inventive, in taking the electric-Miles vision places it'd never been before (while staying true to the original, at least in concept, if not in exact execution). Or are the "Yo Miles!" releases not all they're cracked up to be?? Discuss...

OK, is this another name change I missed hearing about??? (with just a dash of ) Hey, how about we all change names, and see how much fun that would be. Better yet - let's not, and say we did.

I've not heard anything from anybody who's seen a U.S. version, at least not from anyone on this board or AAJ --- and you'd think if there was such a beast, we'd know about it here. I don't think any of the U.S. one's slipped out. Or if so, not a hell of a lot, that's (probably) for sure.

Fuck, Dan, you got that for $2.00!!! What a deal!!!!

You sure do talk a lot, for somebody who's nearly speechless. Seriously, way cool score!! Can't wait to hear your review. I'm not much of a Three-sounds nut myself. Maybe all they needed was a fourth wheel.

I was a huge Floyd nut in college. Basically discovered them (at least deeply) during my freshman year of college (1987-ish). Had a whole bunch of bootlegs, and still have a few of them now -- though I sold off or traded all the vinyl ones. Don't listen to them much any more, but still think they're pretty darn good. Know what you mean, Jim, about not being able to get through Animals all the way. In many ways, it was my favorite record of theirs too. But I gave it a spin about a month ago, and found myself really wishing the tunes were shorter, and that more happened more quickly in them. This isn't to dog them that hard. Just that my jazz ears have spoiled me, in some ways. Gilmore was always one of THE most tasteful (and tasty!!) rock guitarists -- especially soloist -- of the last 35 years (roughly). Recently gave a spin to the live version of "The Wall" released a couple years back. Actually prefer it to the studio version, if only because it seems fresher to my ears. Fun to imagine what it must have been like for the guys in the band during the performances, what with all the logistics they had to contend with (the liner-notes for the live "Wall" release do a good job of capturing the flavor of it, from the band's perspective). Maybe I'll dig out one of my favorite Floyd boots -- a complete "Animals" show (from May 9th, 1977) -- and give it a spin soon. It's got a cool, 1977-era performance of "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" too -- one of the few times they played early Floyd material after 1975. I've also got an interesting, very early complete performance of "Dark Side" (circa 1972), with a completely different "On The Run" sequence too. It's 100% different, nothing like the version that appeared on record. A great later live version of the complete "Dark Side" (circa 1974), that is really soundboard quality, and quite amazing too (with the "On The Run" tune we all know from the studio LP). The boot of that later live "Dark Side" show has the first known performance of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" from early 1974, which has some really funky sections that never got into the studio version. Floyd doesn't do as much for me any more, but I sure as hell loved them back in college. My memories of that music are better than the experience of listening to it now. Damn jazz!! Gilmore still rules!!

Didn't Jim once say that Thursdays were the day of the week that nearly always had the most posts. Seriously.

My thoughts exactly. -
squire"ly\, a. & adv. Becoming a squire; like a squire. squir·rel·ly\,adj. 1) eccentric. 2) cunningly unforthcoming or reticent. Well, which is it? It's whatever the hell my spell-checker fixed my usual gibberish into.

Me either. Good, I'm glad it wasn't just me.

Excuse me -- but am I missing something here?? dizzyspells joined this board less than two weeks ago. How can anyone who has only been on a board for less than two weeks, start a thread with an 8-point dissertation about all the things that have gone wrong with this place. Am I missing something here?? Is dizzyspells somebody else who used to post under another name?? I'm almost to the point of suggesting that this is maybe some of the most insidious "troll"-like behavior I've yet seen on this, or any board. Still catching up on the thread. Back in a minute...

Especially the "I think it may be slightly off course" part. Emphasis on the "slightly" part.

Me either. The board's been a little squirely for maybe the last month or two. But only a bit more than usual. Was there really all this undercurrent of frustration going on?? And the Politics forum (other than a thread or two, here and there), hasn't been nearly as out of hand as it's been at other times within the last couple years. I really don't get it either. I guess I'm about halfway through this thread. Thus, I'll plow on through the rest. Back in a minute.....

Ain't that the truth. Geeze, I'm gone a few hours -- and what the fuck happens around here??? I'm only about 10 posts into this thread, so I've got a lot to catch up on.

I definitely think this is a factor, Jim, and thanks for mentioning this. People forget (or never choose to realize it in the first place), that musical performance has technical demands, that are often very demanding. Whether the player himself (or herself) can read music or not, or explain their art in eve the most minimarl technical terms --- the music itself demands technical ability to perform.

New ones from the Bad Plus and Brad Mehldau
Rooster_Ties replied to Stefan Wood's topic in New Releases
Brad kicks everyone's ass in that department. Anybody know where he went to college?? People normally don't write like that unless they've been all edumacated and stuff. (And I don't necessarily mean that in a good way.) So where did Mehldau go to College??? Somebody here has to know.
