  1. YEAH. WHASSAMATTER U JSDHGRY!!!!
  2. Took the words out of my mouth, on all counts.
  3. Getting back to the Larry Young vs. Sun Ra influence on Hill's organ playing, I think it depends on the session. For instance, if I had to peg an influence on Hill's organ playing on the 10-FEB-1967 date (the last one on disc #3, the one in mono), I'd say here Hill sounds more like Larry Young. But on the trio date, Hill's organ work sounds more like I might expect from Sun Ra. Maybe has to do with the differences in the overall vibe and energy of these two sessions, which are very different.
  4. Decided that I'll post a bigger list tomorrow. I gots to go get me some sleep now, if I know what's good for me. And if I make my offer of "freebies" tomorrow, I'll type up more stuff than I will tonight. Night, night, everybody!!!
  5. Great news!!!! Does that then mean that you're the leader on these gigs?? Either way, great job keeping them after all. Way to go!!!
  6. Later tonight I'll post a short list of CD's that I have available as my "give-away" for this thread. After I post the list (and not before), the first person to respond can chose any one CD from the list as their "freebe". I'm late to a meeting now (or else I'd just post the list now), but I'll be back in about three or four hours.
  7. Only place I've ever seen it is at Dusty Groove, where I got mine. And, FYI, They had one in stock just the other day!!! (last time I looked). It's expensive ($18.99), but it's two albums on one CD -- and very much worth every penny, IMHO.
  8. I'm interested!!!!! Edit: I wasn't 100% sure, until I saw the tune "Black Narcissus" was listed. One of my all-time favorite Joe Hendreson tunes!!!!
  9. Sounds like an idea worth considering.
  10. I started out with several of the BN "greatest hits" compilations in the very early 90's, Herbie, Wayne, Joe Henderson, Lee Morgan, etc... They definitely serve a purpose, and are a great way for many people to get some exposure to the music. I don't think I own very many jazz GH packages any more (maybe one, at most), and have given all I had away to others, hoping they'd catch the bug too. They certainly were a good way for me to get hooked and want to hear more!!!
  11. That would be my preference as well. Lock the thread maybe (at the request of the person who started it), but keep the content.
  12. Not sure if this thread is the most appropriate place to ask this -- but does anybody know why some Black Lion titles sound like THE worst recorded studio sessions of any recorded during the last 50 years??? I don't have both the vinyl and CD's versions to compare, but from what I've heard from others here and back on the BNBB -- both formats are equally retched. The two I'm most familiar with, that suck the worst, are Stanley Cowell's BRILLIANT CORNERS, and Philly Joe Jones’ MO' JOE. I suspect there may be some others that are equally as bad. What's the story with some of these titles being recorded so poorly?? – seemingly in the first place. And more than technically why they sound so bad, I'm wondering is there's some back-story as to why they're so bad, perhaps related to the convoluted label issues. (And if not, no need to derail the thread.) Just curious, thanks.
  13. I'm just now skimming through this thread, and I just wanted to publicly applaud everyone for not flying off the handle about all this. I am seriously marveling at the degree of "adultness" that everyone is exhibiting here, about issues that would otherwise fly SERIOUSLY out of control on any other board. This isn't to say threads like this don't ever spin out of control here. But the fact that everyone appears to be trying to have a meaningful dialog about these issues, without anyone really getting pissy about things -- is truly remarkable. I mean, there's plenty of fodder for some people on any of the sides of this issue -- and these specific transactions -- to potentially get really pissed off about. And yet, we're all being adults here. Bravo, people. And no, I'm not suddenly turning this into a call for a "group hug". This is just a thank you to everyone here, for us having a board like the one we have, where we can all actually "get along" pretty well, most of the time -- even in the face of some conflict. Pretty damn rare thing in this day and age, docha think?? On-line, or off-line, I don't see near enough of it for my tastes, 'cept around here most of the time. Thanks people. Keep up the good work. Resume discussion...
  14. Oblique has been my favorite for some time. I didn't think twice about what I got Bobby to autograph for me about four years ago after a gig of his here in KC.
  15. Ain't that the truth!! Spontoonious had gotten me to not set my expectations too high about him, but I have to say -- going into it, my interest in Robinson's work on this set was still pretty darn high. (I mean, Hill wouldn't have used him on three dates, if he fucked up the first one, right?? ) I've definitely liked what I've heard so far. He's not as great as "the greats", but I've haven't been disappointed any either.
  16. I never can remember the URL, so I always just google "jazzmatazz", and it's always the first search hit in the results. Helped a bunch when the address changed too.
  17. Spent a little more time with the set, though mostly just disc #3 -- the one that's maybe the most "adventurous" of the three (open to debate). That, and the other draw for me was Sam Rivers and Woody Shaw. Sure there are some problems with the material, here and there. Already heard a few -- some ensemble passages are rough, balances off here and there too -- like on the date with Howard Johnson, who sometimes seems low in the mix, and sometimes too loud for certain punctuated notes. But the quality of the soloing (especially in the horns) and the writing (overall), seems to rise above the other issues exist with this material (at least IMHO). The 3rd disc* also really reminds me of COMPULSION, in tone and a bit in concept too perhaps (*though maybe the second Sam Rivers date on the Select, more than the first). I'll echo Stefan's comment about some of the material "wandering" a bit (sometimes more than just "a bit" too, perhaps especially on the "Chained" material, though I've not heard enough of it to really judge). BUT, that's often the way I've reacted to Hill's music over the years, on first listen. (Heck, I had the Hill 63-66 Mosaic for three years before I ever really began to connect with any of it, so why should I expect a complete nirvana instantly with these kind of sessions --- yes, even for a Hill fanatic like me.) The sound is great too, I might add. I'm not an audiophile aficionado, but this thing sounds superb to my ears.
  18. The bastards at the ABC affiliate here in Kansas City run not one, NOT TWO, but THREE half-hour s(h)itcoms after our local evening news -- so Nightline isn't on here until Midnight (or the equivalent of 1:05 am for you East Coast people). (So as I’m typing this, it doesn’t come on for over another hour.) I don't think any other market in the entire U.S. runs Nightline that late.
  19. What the funk happened???
  20. I was too. Never thought I'd see it before early next week. Lots of work to do around the house tomorrow, getting ready for a pot-luck dinner we're hosting in two weeks. The first floor of our house is half a disaster, so we've got to knock things into shape, hopefully mostly this weekend (my wife has Monday off for Presidents' Day). I'm sure I'll be spinning the Hill Select a bunch of times between now and then -- (or as much as my wife can stand ), which probably means discs #1 & #2 only, since #3 is quite a bit more "out" than the other two.
