Wynton?? Oh, wait, I thought you meant metaphorically speaking.

That's what I've done too. Most of my old McMasters went to another friend of mine, who likes jazz quite a bit -- but doesn't have much of a budget for new music. (And what he buys, primarily, are other kinds of music.) Sometimes he lets me give them to him. Other times he gives me about $5 a disc for them -- which is more than I'd ever get in trade credit at a used-CD store -- and quite a bit less than he'd ever find them for used.

States Mull Taxing Drivers By Mile
Rooster_Ties replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
And people that drive less fuel-efficient vehicles pay more too!!!!! Sounds like the current system, which taxes Hummers and SUV's more per mile than Hybrids, works pretty darn well to me!!!! -
For a big, Hollywood production -- I thought The Aviator was a great movie!! Still, I think I liked Sideways better.

Re-read this thread. It's not BN's call (though ultimately it could be). If the artist doesn't want to do something -- then MC respects the artist's wishes. MC and Tom sure didn't try to put the dampers on this thing, and it's not like they're caving into preasure from some "outside group". If it was only up to BN -- it would be on store shelves today.

It's an all-instrumental jazz album, that was named almost 40 years ago. No political statement is being made in the title, nor can one be interpreted from the titles of songs on the record. Nothing in the original liner-notes is the least bit offensive. I doubt it would generate any controversy at all. Seriously.
-
I don't understand what the offense is about the title of the album. Neither do I. It's the name of a city. Where's the offense???? And the album was named almost 40 years ago. Hell, as obscure as this album is - it's any wonder than anyone would ever even notice, let alone be offended.
-
You know, it never even crossed my mind that this 35+ year old album was named after a city in Iraq. I never once made that connection until just now -- when I first read it in this thread.

Well, that's different. Stupid, none the less. But different.

Pressure from where??? From who?? (Seriously, what group is pushing for this???) Honestly, what group has the re-release of a 35+ year old jazz album on their radar???? WTF????

Complete Bill Evans on Verve
Rooster_Ties replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Hmmm. Looks legit, but the pricing is odd to say the least. The Evans box is only $23, but the Rolans Kirk box is $120. Well, at least you can't cut yourself on the Evans... Look again. I think all you're buying is a digital download. ( It won't rust though!! ) -

WTF??? -
I like Thrust better than Headhunters. Guy I like Mwandishi: The Complete Warner Brothers Recordings better than both of them. Me too. But I like Eddie Henderson's first two two dates on Capricorn (with nearly the complete Mwandishi group, including Herbie), even better than Herbie's own Mwandishi recordings.
-
I have this on CD (Japanese), and think it's one of THE very best things I've heard from Herbie, post-1970. Really a fine album, and well worth seeking out. ( Got mine used from somebody here on this board, for which I am still very thankful. )

So then who's got controling interest in Strata these days?? Tolliver, or Cowell, or both?? (Or someone else?? ) Or more specifically, who had it at the time when royalties weren't paid (if that's really the case -- but I'm assuming it was, much as I've heard this). What's the story here??
-
What Strata titles have been released on CD?? (and which haven't??). And by whom and where?? For instance, I've got several on CD from Germany, manufactured by Bellaphon. And just as many from the U.K., by Charly. And a couple I have just say "Made in the U.S.A." (but they don't say by whom). (I've also seen some on-line supposedly from Japan, but I've never seen any up close and personal.) I've also heard that the Charly did NOT pay royalties to (some?/many?/any?) of the Strata artists. In fact, I've heard this from several unrelated sources over the last few years (both on-line, and off), so I've always assumed it was true. Can anyone confirm this?? Does Charly have a history of this with other labels they've reissued on CD too?? / Did all the other CD sources for Strata pay royalties?? (I'm assuming yes, unless I hear otherwise.)

Impromptu Cooking Corner
Rooster_Ties replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I don't totally improvise recipes from scratch very often (couple times a year, at most). But I do like to take existing recipes and change them -- sometimes radically!! -- using the original as a sort of blueprint for the final product. For instance, I took a great Lasagna recipe that I make pretty often, and replaced almost every ingredient with something else (other than the noodles, of course!!). The original recipe was a sort of Mexican Lasagna, with ground beef, black beans, and enchilada sauce (instead of traditional tomato sauce, Italian-style). By the time I got done substituting everything, I ended up with a rather interesting Asian Salmon Lasagna dish, with a bit of shredded carrot, and a spicy peanut sauce!! -- and nary a tomato anywhere to be found!! Wish I could remember what all else I put in it. Pretty much everything I could think of from all the Asian restaurants my wife and I go to. I'm sure I included a bunch of fresh, grated ginger. And I soaked every other noodle in soy sauce, so the layers were more colorful - alternating light and dark. Probably some bright purple cabbage too, if I remember right. And some red bell peppers. The end result was very colorful!!! B-) All in all, it worked out pretty good -- although it was a little odd without any cheese. That's probably the weirdest thing I've cooked up within the last six months.
