By the way, I started a new, separate thread to discuss the music. Link: Andrew Hill Select "Talk About the Music" thread!!, step right up - tell us what you think!! Those of you/us who get the set and want to talk about the music, please do so there. This thread's got tons of "are we there yet?? - are we there yet??!!! " type posts (I know, I posted them too ), that I think it's best to start with a clean slate.

#0310 here.

OK, I got my set about two hours ago. I've spun through all the tracks, listening to one minute here, 2 minutes there, and three or four complete tracks that really grabbed me --- in other words, a little bit of everything. My first, very early reactions are that there is quite a bit of really interesting music here -- and at least half of the tunes that I'd never heard before, really made me want to hear more!! But also there were probably as many that didn't grab me the first time as much as I might have liked. I hope to listen to the whole thing tomorrow, while I'm working on some other stuff around the house. (And maybe a bit more late tonight.) Disc #1 seemed like a pretty coherent album, almost like "Dance With Death", part two. I think the new material here stands up pretty darn well, at least from what I heard anyway. I've always liked the three tracks Tolliver tracks from the old "One For One" LP's, and the extra material is very welcome. Disc #2 seemed the most "hit and miss" to me -- but then again, it also was the least bombastic, and thus the least likely to benefit from just spinning through them quickly. Disc #3 really sounded very interesting (the two dates with Sam Rivers, one of which also has Woody Shaw). Cool use of organ on a couple of these tracks, in a very dramatic way (behind the other soloists, or ensemble passages). This material sounds as interesting as anything Hill did in 1965.

Rooster's BFT #25, questions and logistics only...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
I'll try to keep things between 78 and 79 minutes per disc (and closer to 78, probably). Shouldn't be too hard, based on what I've got picked out so far. -

Thanks Al!! I haven't noticed any serious distortion on any of the tracks I've played with, volume-wise. In fact, I haven't really noticed any distortion -- but then I've only been listening on my PC speakers. Time to burn some tests, and check 'em out on the better stereo in the other room. -

Rooster's BFT #25, questions and logistics only...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
Hey, another logistical question or two… Question: Attn. previous BFT creators -- have any of you made any effort to fix the disparity in volume levels between the selections?? (Even if all your source material was just from legit CD's.) I just discovered a little utility (that I had on my PC all along!!), which allows me to increase or decrease the volume of any .wav file, in 25% increments. I've noticed that three or four of my selections are quite a bit on the quiet-side, especially compared with everything else. And I also have one or two selections (from "private recordings" ), that were recorded louder than everything else. So, I'm thinking of trying to smooth things out a bit. Note: I'm not trying to "compress" things (if I understand that term correctly: "to quiet the loud sections, and bring up the soft sections, within the same piece of music), but rather I just want fix the relative "loudness" and "softness" of some of the tracks, relative to each other. So, is there any reason I shouldn't?? (None that I can see, but I thought I'd ask anyway.) The utility in question is just the ultra-basic "Windows ® Sound Recorder, for Win ME" (yes, I'm still using ME ). Never even knew I had this thing, until I clicked the wrong thing after a right-mouse click from the Explorer. Thanks!! Question: Any other BFT tricks of the trade I should be aware of??? I've already discovered how to edit tracks (still using Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4, just the stuff that was pre-loaded on my PC when I bought it). I'm putting it to good use, editing tracks here and there (where it makes sense), especially with the "private recordings" - and for some other source material that was really way too long to use in it's original form. -
With Monday being a Federal Holiday here in the U.S. (so no mail), I'm guessing I'll either get mine tomorrow (Saturday), or not until Tuesday. Would love to get it quicker, but my wife and I have a TON of stuff to do this weekend --- so I probably wouldn't be able to get much listening in, even if I got it tomorrow. So then actually, maybe getting it Tuesday might be better... Hey, anybody know how Mosaic ships their simple small-package domestic stuff?? Do they even use the U.S. Postal Service for anything?? Haven't bought a Mosaic in ages (probably 3 or 4 years, before the Selects even were around), and my memory -- now that I think of it -- is they used UPS (as opposed to the USPS). (IF they use UPS, then may I could still get it on Monday. This from the UPS site: "Recognized, but not observed". If they don't "observe" it, then how is it "recognized"???

Having a blast putting #25 together currently, so add me to the list again too!! (Guess that'd be #55, or somthing like that.) Thanks!!!!

For those of you setting VCR's, occasionally Nightline runs a full hour. Not very often, and probably not for some jazz thing -- but you never know!!!
