  1. Such a difficult choice. Both do nothing for me.
  2. Forgot -- Spontoonious and Free For All both already have the "bonus" 2-hour concert too. (They're both here in Kansas City, so I forgot them, cuz I never "sent" it to them.) And before you all think you know what it is -- it's NOT an Andrew Hill concert.
  3. Wonderful news!!! All our fingers and toes are crossed for you two. At least this is some real progress, for a change -- even if you still don't have hard answers.
  4. I'm mostly concerned about the extra expense for the distributors. I know I can't afford to send everything to everyone (even if I was just sending two discs), so I'm gonna have to lean on the kindness of the distributors to help --- both in terms of time (burning four discs per mailing), and especially expense (extra cost for discs, and extra cost for postage too).
  5. Howdy everybody, Well, I've been working in earnest on my upcoming BFT (#25), and I've got a hell of a lot of great tracks picked out!!!! So many, in fact, that I'm pretty sure I'm going to do TWO BFT discs -- unless there's some mass objection to me doing so. I just have too damn many great things I want to share, in order to pare it down to just 79 minutes. Part of the trouble, of course, if finding a few GREAT selections, that are like 12-minutes long each -- which really eats up time/space quickly. Not many, but all it takes is three long-ish ones, and suddenly half of one disc is already full. Also, I'm starting this thread now, so I can go ahead and pre-post some logistical questions that I already have. (I'll create a separate "sign up" thread later, or else rename this one at the appropriate time.) Question: How many mailings (total, worldwide) have people been requesting of late??? Looking at other threads, here and there, the answer seems to be about 50. Is this correct?? I have to admit that I only participated in the first 4 or 5 BFT's, but I found I really wasn't devoting enough time to responding with my commentary, and thus I dropped out of the BFT scene completely after about #5. (So I'm probably behind the times on recent advances in BFT logistics.) I'm Stateside, so I can certainly send a bunch to people here in the U.S. -- probably up to 20 or maybe 25 mailings (depending on how many discs total in each mailing - see down below for the "wrinkle"). And I wouldn't mind some help with U.S. distribution, beyond that (thanks a HUGE BUNCH in advance!!!! ). Question: Have there been any problems in the past with BFT discs being around 79 minutes in length?? Or should I keep to some shorter length, say less than 74 (or 72??) minutes??? Maybe the issue is what distributors can burn -- cuz I have no problems burning 79-minute discs. Question: Would I be taken out and shot for wanting to also include burns of two more discs: a two-hour unreleased live concert that simply has to be heard to be believed??? Sangry, it's that same thing I sent you along with the recent Grachan Moncur big-band promo/burn. Can you confirm how GREAT this thing is, and how much people would want to hear it?? I have sent it to a couple other people on the board too (Undergroundagent is one that I can remember sending it too, maybe Connie500 too??? -- I forget. Oh, and couw definitely has one too.). If any of the rest of you have gotten a two-disc, two-hour unreleased concert from me within the last year, can you speak up about how much you liked it??? – without spilling the beans about who it is. ( ) I know, I know -- this would mean my BFT mailing would be FOUR discs total (YIKES!!!! ), but I've already been thinking about sending this concert out for some time -- and treating it as an "Album Of The Week". People shouldn't consider it part of the BFT, but rather just an opportunity for me to include something I was thinking about sending around anyway (as long as I'm sending stuff to a ton of you anyway). Distributors: I plan to include some real CD's (the silver ones), in my mailing to you, as a big-ass thank you for all your time and expense. I can't pay you in the traditional way for your help, but I've got a huge stack of trade-bait CD's a mile high -- and I'll be happy to set each of you up with two or three discs each, for your efforts. (Yeah, some of my trade-bait is crap, but some of it isn't half bad at all.) Other thoughts??? -- anyone??? Any other questions that I should be asking, that I'm overlooking???
  6. If you don't mind me asking, any idea how many copies of Boogaloo Sisters you've sold, Jim?? I realize that might be harder to tell than it seems, with all the promos/freebies you probably have to send to various festivals and to radio, etc.
  7. I was wondering the very same thing. (Seriously!!) And what about those of us who are offended by them shelving the RVG of this title!! I've still got my Conn of Basra (can I even mention it by name without offending someone??? ), and I probably wasn't going to upgrade it --- so I don't really have a dog in this fight.
  8. Hadn't thought of that, but I'll have to give another listen and see if I concur. I do think Joe Farrell sounds a fair bit like Joe Henderson on "Passing Ships". And I think Bennie Maupin sounds a hell of a lot like Wayne Shorter on the Chick Corea "Complete 'IS' Sessions". And not just any Wayne. But the Wayne I hear on all those live Miles bootlegs from 1969. THAT'S the Bennie Maupin I want to hear more of. YEOWWW!!!!!!
  9. I wouldn't sell mine for all the tea in China.
  10. Hey, who ever gets their set first -- please start a NEW thread about it -- specifically to discuss the music (maybe "discuss the music" would be a good sub-heading). We've already got something like 4 or maybe 5 different threads already started about this set (I know, cuz I started 2 of them!!!), and it might be nice to start fresh, with a clean slate -- so people don't have to wade through all the speculation to get to the good stuff. Thanks!!!!
  11. How very fitting that you should be among the first in the general public to hear this material. Thanks, so much, for all your efforts on the Andrew Hill Discography.
  12. What's a sales tax? If the Portland he's from is Oregon, there's no sales tax. Oh, yeah -- I forgot that some states don't have them things. About 7.5% here, give or take a bit for local taxes.
  13. But don't forget sales tax, if you're buying in person. That adds about $1 per disc, so the real price is more like $10. Might still be cheaper to get 'em on-line (if there's no tax on the transaction).
  14. I never dreamed they'd all ever be released. Even when I first traded e-mails with MC about a year ago, and he said the idea was on the drawingboard, I still didn't think it would ever come to pass. I seriously figured Andrew wouldn't go for it. Or at least not all of it. Maybe one or two sessions, at most -- but not all of them. I still can't believe it. And everytime I look thought the players listed in all the sessions, I start drooling.
  15. Time to start camping out, day and night, by the mailbox.
  16. Not a she'll, or so I've been told.
  17. But only just barely...
  18. I'd go with the 65-68 material. A bit towards the end gets a little out there (and I do only me "a little"), so most people should be able to get their ears around most of it. It's my favorite of all the Miles boxes. I love the Miles and Gil box too, but so much of it is outtakes -- not woven together into suites -- that it's really like you're only buying 4 discs (but paying for 6). OK, maybe 5 -- but for most people, only 4 of the discs are logically organized, like most listeners would want (not nutcases like us!! ) And in any case, most people would probably be better served by the individual Miles and Gil CD's. Another plus with the 65-68 box is that there is a fair a bit of stylistic growth by the group over that time period -- more than you get with the Miles and Trane box, for instance (IMHO, anyway -- and others will argue this, I'm sure). The new "Seven Steps" box is among the least interesting to me, but that's just my opinion.
  19. Yousonofabitch!!! I was only gonna offer $89.95.
  20. Had one (a legit one, from Japan, on CD) for about 6 or 7 years, and I traded it to Spontoonious within the last year. It's a good set, but for some reason I never connected with it nearly as much as I wanted to. I normally really like Ornette's trumpet-playing, but for some reason I didn't care for it nearly as much on this one. Two or three tracks with violin too, which didn't work for me that much either. It's not so much that I didn't like it, but rather that Spontoonious wanted it more than I did, and he had some good trade bait. Didn't figure I'd miss it all that much, and haven't.
  21. So, does anybody know why the fuck we all get this shit in our e-mail boxes every day??? I can understand the spam that's selling stuff -- but these "spam poetry" things, I get probably half-a-dozen a day, most without any links or attachments at all. What's the point???
  22. If I were doing one of these, here would be my priorities... First priority would be to include all legal commerical releases, in any format (audio or video). Second would be grey-market material that's been "released" in any kind of semi-professional packaging (bootlegs, and such). Third would be private recordings of any sort, that are in circulation, or held by even just a very select number of collectors. I would also include unreleased recordings that are still in the vaults. But as Mike said, "include everything", is the way to go.
  23. From what I've heard and read, Woody Shaw got fairly close to being blind, near the end of his life. You find lots more standards on his recordings in those last few years, simply because he couldn't read charts. Probably wasn't ever "legally blind" (my wild guess), but her certainly had significant vision problems.
