Same thing for me, both today -- and mostly crappy response yesterday too. Was just thinking about starting a thread about it too -- so thanks for popping this one up.

Any other "summit" albums worth mentioning??? Not just stuff with Ellington, but the whole gambit.

interesting/significant "expanded" CD reissues????
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I just picked this up for the first time about a month ago. Not a double-CD, but the bonus material was pretty nice to have, clocking in at well over 30-minutes (if I remember right). -
DVD/amp combos (media room in a small library)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Audio Talk
OK, I still haven't bought anything yet -- but this one's got my attention at the moment. Anybody have any opinions about this model?? It's on sale this week at Nebraska Furniture Mart (here in KC) for only $204. The main things I like about it are that it plays both DVD's and CD's, and is a combined "bookshelf" system, with an integrated amp. Plus, it appears to have an AM/FM tuner built-in too (a definitely plus). I don't give a rat's ass about the cassette deck, but hey - if I never use it, who cares?? Having an integrated unit, especially one that doesn't take up too much space, is a definite plus -- since this is going in a small room, a library to be exact (about 9 by 11 feet in size). I'd like to devote one corner of a single shelf to the unit, with speakers right in the bookshelves on either side (probably with the unit and one speaker side-by-side, far on one side -- and then the other speaker far on the other side). I don't really care if the CD part is programmable or not, since I rarely program CD's all that much. I'm planning to get a separate el-cheapo VCR, and pipe it in the back of this unit. Edit: Looking more closely at the back-pannel, it looks like there aren't aux-inputs for video (best as I can see, anyway). Hmmmm.... Guess I'll have to have an A/B switch for the a/v from this unit vs. the a/v from the el-cheapo VCR. Or does anybody have any better ideas about how to handle this?? I suppose I could also route the video from the DVD player through the VCR, and on to the TV --- maybe. Link: Panasonic 5-Disc DVD/CD Micro System with Progressive Scan and 3-Way Speaker System - Silver with wood grain (Best Buy listing) Link: Panasonic - 5-Disc Progressive-Scan DVD Home Theater System (same thing at Nebraska Furniture Mart) The specs at the Best Buy site seem to be a bit more complete. -
I have about four or five pages of "wishes" listed at half.com. It doesn't include particularly obscure stuff, because they're usually not in the half.com database. But I've found that half.com is a good way to track most things (OJC's, for instance, and most new releases), because by its very nature - there are always lots of OOP titles on my wish list, which half.com has in their DB. Haven't been buying nearly as much in recent years, so I don't really go pounding the pavement looking for things. (And frankly, most of the stuff I'm really interested in can't be found in this town anyway.)

Hey, anybody mind?? -- if we have a separate thread just for the discussion of "progressive" and/or "out-leaning" OJC's. (Call this a companion to this thread: Before OJCs go away, what to buy.) I'm not aware of very many progressive and/or "out-ish" OJC's (just cuz there aren't that many, far as I know), but I'm guessing there's a few that exist that I have no idea about. Lay 'em on me, and thanks!!!

Seems like every once in a while, usually entirely by accident, I stumble across a fancy double-disc re-release of an album that I hadn't even realized was getting the "expanded" treatment. What I'd love to see is a big list of "expanded" releases, for browsing purposes -- just so I knew what was out there to consider for purchase. Some examples... I know practically the entire Elvis Costello catalog is being reissued in radically expanded releases, with full-length bonus discs (I've even got a couple of them). And I understand The Cure are getting the same treatment, with full-length bonus discs accompanying every reissue (I think only their first album is out now with a bonus disc, with others due soon -- or sooner or later, anyway). Plus there's a whole bunch of discs in the Legacy series from Sony/Columbia, although I bet I'm not even aware of half of what's out there. Plus some other labels have been doing this too - like wasn’t The Cars first album released with a bonus disc of demos?? And haven’t there been some Bob Marley albums released with full-length bonus discs too?? What are your favorites??? -- primarily in terms of the quality and/or "interest factor" of the "bonus" material. (As opposed to just the importance of the original album, absent the bonus material.) And I suppose a thread like this is just begging for people to complain about substandard "bonus disc" material too, so bring that on too.

Distant relative, perhaps??
-
Aint' that the truth (at least sometimes). I have a liberal/progressive friend who bitches about Wal-Mart all the time, but she shops there as much or more than she does any other store. Her excuse?? It's just so close to where she lives, she can't help it.
-
Yup, she would have been about 29 or 30 when I saw her on The Daily Show.
-
Anybody here see Jennifer Garner's first and maybe only appearance on The Daily Show?? It was something like three or four years ago, and she was promoting Alias, which was brand new at that time). She came off well, but seemed pretty young and wide-eyed. Then something, perhaps the mention of a recent birthday of hers? - prompted her to reveal that she was like 30 or maybe even 31 years old. I swear, the entire audience -- plus John Stewart -- let out a very audible gasp, and John was totally beside himself for half a beat (as was the audience, I suspect). She recoiled slightly, a bit in horror, obviously wondering if something was suddenly terribly amiss (not understanding why the audience gasped, or maybe seeming not understand -- who knows which??? -- we’ll never know). John recovered a second later, and passed it off as if now everyone in the audience suddenly knew that she couldn't be trusted (after all, "don't trust anyone over 30") ..... or something funny like that. But more to the point -- I swear that was one of THE most pronounced and genuine audience reactions I've ever seen/heard, in all my days. Everyone in that room sounded like they were in shock that this sweetheart of a gal, cute as a bug, was thirty -- when she didn't seem a day over 22, or maybe not even one second over 19. Anybody else remember that??

I'm curious about Chris Capers, the trumpeter on this session. Not a name I'd ever heard of before this. A quick AMG lookup (yeah, I know, it's probably incomplete, or worse), says he played on the following dates... 1965 Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Vol. 1 Sun Ra Trumpet 1965 Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Vol. 2 Sun Ra Trumpet 1966 Magic City Sun Ra Percussion, Trumpet 1976 Live at Montreux Sun Ra and His Arkestra Trumpet 1975 Rhythmatism Steve Reid Trumpet, Guest Appearance 1962-70 Holy Ghost: Rare & Unissued Recordings Albert Ayler Trumpet Maybe some other dates too, I'm guessing. (Anybody got any others to report??) Hey relyles, if you get the chance to spin this - could you let us know how Capers is on the date, and if he gets much solo space?? Thanks!!!
-
Although I've never heard it myself (seriously), I understand this date (below) is out there in some trading circles... When I first noticed it (I was looking for unreleased stuff from the late 60's at the time), and of course I looked it up in the most recent Cuscuna/Ruppli discography, and saw nothing about it -- so my assumption was that it probably had nothing to do with BN. No idea if the line-up is accurate, though I don't have any specific reason to doubt it. Like I said, I've never heard the date personally -- though I suspect someone around here may have.

That's nuts!!!! -
Contact BN, and I'll bet that make it right. What's the best way to get ahold of them these days??
-
So when do you start taking pre-orders, Chuck??
-
I'm hoping to see them here in Kansas City in March too. Who else is typicially in the band?? All the billings I've ever seen have only mentioned those three (at least for the KC gig).

Marley to be exhumed, reburied in Ehtiopia
Rooster_Ties replied to Chrome's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Can't find anything on the wires (or at least nothing with the Google news search) that refutes the original now-supposedly-bogus story. I have a slightly formed opinion about this, but frankly -- it's really a family matter, and something about which my opinion doesn't matter even one tiny bit. (Plus, I can see both sides of the argument too.) -
Quick, Lumin. Post four or five more times -- anywhere on the board -- before Chuck gets here. Hurry!!!!!!

I have. Pretty nice it is too. A very personal take on things and the guy seems to like to spin his tales to where it gets real thin and then yank some on it. I like that. He isn't too bothered by trying to be objective, which is a wise decision as it makes for a far better story. Been a while since I've read it, but I remember the Zappa book being a good read as well. Everything couw just described, but a very interesting book - especially for those already deep into Zappa.
