  1. Also where Art Deco architecture is most at home. During the depression, the oil was flowing so freely, there literally wasn’t a depression in Tulsa. Development (i.e. more new buildings) simply never really stopped in Tulsa. https://wanderwisdom.com/.amp/travel-destinations/TulsaArtDeco If memory serves, there’s something like close to 75 examples still standing to this very day, including a few incredible church’s, also schools and other public buildings, and a fair number of residences.
  2. Wow. I’m almost sorry I asked.
  3. Yes, definitely. Hard not to, especially with the same leader (or co-leader maybe, would be more accurate). I have gotten rid of a small handful of Woody dates over the years (half a dozen or so, practically all sideman appearances) — but not many!! Far as I’m concerned, upwards of 80%-85% of everything he recorded is well worth having ready (physical) access to. (Same with Andrew Hill and Joe Henderson, imho.)
  4. Yeah, same here… I just looked — I have a big, ever-changing pile of discs I’m always contemplating getting rid of (to listen to a few times first) — and I have the “WS w/ the TJQ” disc in that pile currently. Doesn’t mean anything — I think I’ve put it in that pile (and taken it back out again) a dozen times in the last 10 years — but haven’t actually gotten rid of it yet! On the other hand, “Dr. Chi” has never been in that pile, or not for long!! (Like I said, I always confuse them, so I’ve probably played that game of trying to re-figure out which one is the one I might get rid of someday, maybe.
  5. Can you elaborate? BTW, I like one of the Tone Jansa dates better than the other one — but I always forget which is which. (One’s great! - the other, just good.)
  6. Beautiful footage!! Sharp color, multi-camera, with slower fades between cuts. Very nice!! (Same thing, just trying to post it as an embedded video, for easier viewing.)
  7. to say nothing of The Butchers, The Bakers, and The Candlestick Makers
  8. 40 minutes video of Woody with the RTV Slovenia Big Band at a jazz festival in 1985 — Shmokin!!
  9. Since Sunday, my 95-year old father has been getting very confused about things, having trouble coming up with some words, sometimes only answering questions with short 5-6 word sentences, and (twice now) not knowing if it was day or night (extreme confusion about time of day, and passage of time). I normally talk to him every day for usually ~20 minutes, and when I talked to him on Friday it was for over 45 minutes (and he seemed completely normal). But since Sunday, he hasn’t been able to sustain a conversation for more than 4-5 minutes (and I called him 5 times yesterday, and 4-5 times Monday). So I got word first thing this morning that he’s Covid-positive — which is sort of a relief, because at least there’s an explanation for what’s been going on. An ongoing story, obviously, more to come. My cousin’s husband’s father (also in his 90’s) got Covid about 2 months ago, and had major ‘brain-fog’ for about a week, but then seemed to be 100% back to normal a couple weeks later. My dad’s double-vaxed, and double-boosted (all Pfizer) — and I’m hoping for the best. I’ve been on a rollercoaster the last few days, to say the least, from 1,000 miles away (he’s back in St. Louis, in what I feel is a very capable and good assisted living center — though so far, knock on wood, he hasn’t even had to take advantage of any of their ‘assisted living’ services — and he still lives ‘independently’ (other than getting his meals in a common dining room). For the moment, I do still have a high confidence level in the quality of the place he lives, and the care he’s getting — and I’ve never had any reason to doubt the quality of the people who run the place and work their (who all have mostly seemed nothing short of fantastic, since we moved him in there last September, and during my 5-6 visits since then). Finger’s crossed he comes thru all this just fine. He sounds pretty good on the phone — pretty darn good, actually (no breathing problems, just a slight nasally sound to his voice), and it’s really just been his mental acuity that seems to be the biggest symptom, from what I can tell.
  10. The Bastards will be carrying this... https://www.dustygroove.com/item/119251
  11. Interestingly, I'm just seeing that there was also a (leaderless) Leaders Trio... https://www.allmusic.com/album/heaven-dance-mw0000112128 Just one album, best as I'm seeing...
  12. Been spinning the Hank in Holland '68 disc a few times the last couple weeks (maybe 3x) -- and gosh, it's such a nice collection. The two big band numbers especially, but the whole thing really. Still regularly or at least often available at Dusty (though not this very moment, of course). https://www.dustygroove.com/item/831701
  13. Yes indeed!! These radio-show-size hour-long meals of music, perfectly portioned -- and seasoned with wonderful information! -- are just a delight!!
  14. That's a dead link, so I can't be sure if this is the same thing -- but I just remembered I have a copy of this Gunther Schuller conducted remake of Graettinger compositions... https://www.discogs.com/release/6943696-Pete-Rugolo-Franklyn-Marks-Robert-F-Graettinger-Ebony-Band-City-Of-Glass Here's a taste, and then the second YouTube link is a playlist with the entire album... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVFlOgwgmEs&list=OLAK5uy_mwmOB9xhUfuwWgBNa24EIOn71RpChG3oE At least I think that's the link the playlist (or go to YouTube and search on "city of glass ebony band"). BTW, I'd forgotten about even owning this, until I picked up my copy of the Kenton City of Glass CD comp on Capital a few minutes ago -- and low and behold I have it in a 2CD case, with the liners and the disc from the Schuller/Ebony-Band CD included (a little treat hiding inside!!). Every once in blue moon I'll discover two related individual CD's that I've paired that way in a 2CD case (over a decade ago), and plum forgotten about completely!! Another taste...
  15. Seriously, Judgement turned out to be one of the nicest t-shits I think I’ve ever gotten (in 30 years).
  16. Yup, can confirm!! I got a Judgement and Out To Lunch — and they had Hill’s Compulsion!!! about 2-3 years ago (which I also got). All XL, but they’re all a ‘snug’ XL. The Judgement one is especially nice!! ❤️
  17. Any that recorded? I’d love to discover some tasty releases that haven’t ever been on my radar before.
  18. I was just gonna mention/ask about Gerald Wilson. Don’t have my Mosaic notes in front of me (cuz I’m at work), but was his a ‘working’ band? I didn’t get the sense that those were studio-only assemblages — though I know the personnel did vary from record to record, at least some (Tolliver on this date, Hutcherson on another, etc…) Anyway, his was the first name I thought of.
  19. Many, many more!!!!
  20. Yeah, M-BASE isn’t what I think of as being ‘fusion’ — but it isn’t simply jazz either. Honestly, it’s almost its own thing — like M-BASE is a whole separate sub genre of jazz.
  21. It was definitely that Michael Naura Quartet date that was making me think of starting a similar thread barely 8 hrs before this one appeared (and I might well have done so myself today!) — so my vote goes for synchronicity!!
  22. Got this lovely Michael Naura Quartet CD — Call (MPS, 1971) — in the mail a couple days ago… AND, I almost stared a thread about MPS myself only just yesterday!
  23. To be honest, this was a date that I discovered the existence of at some point a few years ago (I presume). So I added to my ‘wanted’ list on Discogs, and promptly forgot all about it. Discogs had just the one track on YouTube that I posted above (and I couldn’t play it on-demand from Pandora, which had never heard of Lystedt) — so other than that one, I don’t know the album. (I just noticed it on my want-list yesterday, and thought if I posted it here, maybe I wouldn’t forgot about it again for probably a couple more years. ) So — I’m on a quest for it on CD, but one that does’t cost a mint.
  24. No idea where or how I discovered this album (recorded in Sweden in 1963-64) -- which I'm only just now rediscovering in a want-list I have on discogs -- but I thought I'd better post about it, before I forgot all about it again for 5 more years probably... Not sure if this has ever been discussed any on the board, but this thread seemed as good as any... https://www.discogs.com/release/9595903-Lars-Lystedt-Sextet-Jazz-Under-The-Midnight-Sun Lars Lystedt Sextet – Jazz Under The Midnight Sun
