  1. OK, what are your favorite hard-bop/modal piano-trio albums that really kick!! I'm looking for stuff that swings and/or grooves like mad (like a freight train!!!), and particularly in a modal way, and/or with some static harmony (or at least without traditional "changes"-based tunes and playing all over the place). What's the best of the best??? --- and what's incredible, but often overlooked??? I'm a sucker for the 1965-75 era, but am certainly open to more recent outings. Thanks!!! Some examples I have, and love... John Hicks -- "Hell's Bells" (Strata East, 1975) Mulgrew Miller -- "Key's To The City" and "Work" (Landmark, 1985-86) Mulgrew Miller -- "With Our Own Eyes" (Novus, 1994) Mixed-meter stuff would be great too!! (I know, I'm asking for the world here), but whatever it is -- its gotta kill in the swing/groove dept, but in a modal hard-bop kinda way. Lay it on me!!! (And I'll post some more examples too, as I think of them.)
  2. I just get 'em from Office Depot, or Office Max (or some standard 'big-box' office supply store). Probably not the all-time cheapest place to find 'em ever, but they have 'em pretty darn cheap, from what I've seen.
  3. I've always liked the original of this song. One of the better of those all-star kinda things, in my book. About 100-times better (IMHO), than "We Are The World".
  4. Spontoonious and I each just pulled the trigger (combined order from The Bastards™) - on this relatively recent (1998) reissue, on CD. I found some brief audio-clips on AMG, and man -- this sounds like a MONSTER date!! Ted Curson - trumpet Georges Arvanitas - piano Jackie Samson - bass Charles Saudrais - drums Here's a review from the AMG, and then The Hype™ (from The Bastards™). Fortunately they match (for a change ). I'm a total sucker for... 1) Progressive but not entirely "out" dates. 2) Said dates from the late 60's and early 70's. 3) Trumpet-players with The Balls™ to record with a rhythm-section, sans all other horns. This one scores on all counts!!! B-)
  5. Anybody remember when Frank Zappa was thinking about running for President too??? There was a pretty lengthy interview I read somewhere with Frank, mostly all about what his campaign might have been like, and his positions on things. (He was mostly a Libertarian, at heart -- if I remember right.) Would have been interesting if he had. Here's a link to an interview with Zappa (not sure this is the same one I remember, though), but mostly about this very topic. Link: Frank Zappa for president!!
  6. Trust me, you're gonna want what I'm gonna send you. Can't tell the rest of the board just yet -- but you'll all be in on it, in due time. So Jim, what's your snail-mail address. And clear out your mailbox a little bit, so I can send you the PM I've got all typed up, just waiting to explain the deal to you.
  7. I know. Jeeze, who's idea was it to sell cruises with Iggy Pop???
  8. Hell's bells, I just found audio-samples of Vol. 1 on the AMG (LINK). (I hadn't even looked there for vol. 1, cuz I know from prior experience that vol. 2 is nowhere to be found on the AMG site.) The thing is that BN should just release "Heritage" as a Rare Groove CD. (I'm assuming it's just as good as "Sunburst" -- correct??)
  9. So, what's the general opinion about this release?? I normally don't buy compilations (well, not jazz ones, anyway) --- but I might make an exception in this case. That, and I've already got "Anthology, Vol. 2" (which is Eddie's first two albums, both complete, on one CD), so now I feel like I ought to consider buying the first volume too. I've already got Sunburst, but I think that's the only thing I own that would have tracks that appear on this compilation. (Also, at $19 for one CD (at Dusty Groove), that's pretty damn expensive for a compilation. Hence my inquiry here -- is it worth it??)
  10. Here's a "Cylon" gingerbread cookie for that mixed metaphor of yours, Free For All. (You never know what the Google Image Search will turn up!!!! )
  11. This is one I own an original of... SUN RA "Universe In Blue" ORIGINAL 1972 SATURN LP And here's another one I have (not a Saturn)... Sun Ra - Other Voices, Other Blues - Horo dbl LP I've got about 30 Sun Ra LP's, of which about 6 or 7 are Saturns. Have to look through them, and remind myself of which titles. Bought nearly all of them from a single seller, back around 1991. Paid $100 (total, including shipping!!) for all of them -- which turned out to be between $3 or $4 per disc. All in all, a pretty good deal!!! To this day, this was probably the single 'biggest' Internet puchase I've ever made -- in terms of the number of items in any one single transaction. (Actually, technically I was on "BITNET" back then, so this pre-dates my days on the Internet -- though I suppose it was all the same thing, in a sense, too.)
  12. I have a handful of early, original Saturns -- and a Japanese kid (college age) offered me $50 each for them, about 8 years ago. I said 'no thanks' rather firmly, and then he said he thought he could get $100 each for them back in Japan. (He was over here for school, and was buying up things he thought he could resell back home, just to turn a dime.) Doesn't mean that's what they're worth. Just that you're likely to find some pretty high prices, depending on what you're looking for. Any recently closed auctions on eBay give any hints??
  13. Make Money as a Jazz Drummer!!!!
  14. Miss Texas 2000 plays Chopin.... (MP3 1.75 MB) Ouch!!!
  15. Wow, finally, the Bolden Cylinder!!!!
  16. I think Spontoonious generally prefers the old McMasters to the new (domestic) RVG's. (I shouldn't presume to speak for him, but I'm pretty sure he's mentioned that to me a couple of times.) FWIW...
  17. Minor suggestion to people putting up a "review" to set the record straight... 1) Get it right the first time -- cuz there's no way to go back and edit it. 2) You can only review the album once (or so it seems). I haven't deleted my cookies yet, so perhaps that's the way they're limiting reviews to one per person. (Or perhaps it's one per IP address). In any case, get it right the first time. Also, please note that the subject line of your review needs to be no longer than this one... "Great CD!!! - but seriously, please boycott cdstre" Notice how the end ("cdstreet.com") got cut off. So it looks like the "subject line" limit is how many characters are in: "Great CD!!! - but seriously, please boycott cdstre". (I'm too lazy to count, but the limit is there, if you need to know.) Get to it people!!!! Link: Eat Shit, CDSTREET!
  18. And this recent classic.... AAJ thread: Wallace Roney's "Prototype" Looks Like A Real Stinker Oy, indeed.
  19. I just noticed that anyone can add a "review" of the organissimo album to their site. Here's mine... I didn't give them my real e-mail address, but I figured I'd put in my actual organissimo userid as my name. Let's all do the same, so we can back up Jim's claim (in the listing). Couldn't hurt, right?? And let's be civil about it -- and just restate the facts of the situation. No need for all of us to tell them to eat shit. In fact, the more of us that post "reviews" that politely back up Jim's claim, the better, right???
  20. OK, let's put our great minds together, and collectively figure out how we can get CDSTREET.COM to remove Jim's CD from their website. What if everyone one of us here e-mailed them and said "listen guys, you need to stop listing the Organissimo CD on your website, because you're not selling it any more". There are a handful of lawyers on this board -- can somebody send a mean letter to them (by snail-mail), on official letterhead, and get them to comply?? What other ways can we help in this effort??? Other ideas, anybody??
  21. Well, it's not exactly my mine to share -- but I grew up in St. Louis area, right in the heart of The New Madrid Fault. Does that count???
