Don't know the answer to your question, but let me be the first to say... Welcome!! If you get the chance, please introduce yourself (here in this thread would be fine), and tell us a bit about yourself. Cheers!!

Like most here, I'm not sure if Joe was innovative as such (in the strict sense of the word). But I do especially agree with Jim, that Joe's rhythmic sense was one of his strongest areas (though he was certainly strong in a whole bunch of areas). That, and also his use of space - which I also feel was somewhat unique, at least among tenor-players. Somehow Joe always seemed to have a great rhythmic sense of urgency to his music (or maybe "tension" is a better word) – in his use of fast notes, and in his tone... ...and yet, he always found ways of leaving quite a bit of space (rests) in his solos. (I think this is usually where somebody says something about his fire not burning as bright, but never the less, burning twice as deep – or something very cliché like that.) Perhaps it should also be said that Joe went his own way, during a time when many were trying to go Coltrane's way (or at least those perceived as being the "strongest" players were going Coltrane's way -- both in the 60's, and in the 70's too). I guess the real key is to try and figure out and discuss what made Joe's playing unique. As Jim has pointed out, it wasn't any one thing. But it was probably his unique combination of strengths. (Standard disclaimer: Joe's probably my all-time favorite tenor player.)

Some Japanese TOCJ BN with all of the previously unreleased cuts from the Herbie Hancock box set. Trouble is, I didn't do my homework before I bid, and didn't realize that the entire CD was also on the Herbie BN box (which I already had) --- so it turned out to be something I already owned (in a round-about way). In the long run I found a happy home for it, however, with a friend who had all the original albums on vinyl, and the guy had no plans to buy the box-set ever. I think I paid about $20 for it, or something like that. After that, I got a hell of a lot better about checking into what it was I was buying, before I bid on it.

I want to make something perfectly clear...
Rooster_Ties replied to undergroundagent's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Not sure I even want to read this entire thread, but for what it's worth -- I've bought and/or traded probably well more than a dozen CD's with Allan (undergroundagent), and haven't had any troubles. A few discs were a couple weeks in coming -- but hell, I've been three weeks or more sending stuff to him (so his on-time track-record is much better than mine!!!). I'd definitely trade and/or buy more from him without any concerns. -
Goofy stuff on the web

Alright, we need some first-hand reporting on this. What the hell is a "meat shake"??? They've got locations all around CA, and NY too -- from my 3-second glance at the website. Somebody on this board has to be near one of their locations (if they do actually exist). What the hell is a "meat shake"??? (For the record, I'm a little afraid to find out!! ) -
Appreciate you sharing those thoughts with us, RainyDay. I think Jim made the right call.

Somebody ought to grab the pics from the auction, and post them here in this thread, as attachments. (They won't last for long as hot-links, where they are now.) I'd do it myself, but I'm late to another appointment.

Good call, Jim.

Yup, Bev's got it. Actually, there's probably a hundred or more pics of her at this site: Link: CLICK HERE Bev's link above goes to one gallery (the first one, of many) -- but there's 14 galleries total, plus stills and other pics from tons of her films, and other pics too. -

Zappa. HA!!! Good one, Chuck!! Here's another pic of our mystery lady... -
OK, since we no longer have the Babe thread to kick around any more, it's time for a little Babe-related fun... Who is this mystery lady???

Half.com NOT closing
Rooster_Ties replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
As a buyer (I've never sold anything on eBay, or half.com), but as a buyer -- I'm glad to hear half.com isn't going away. I've bought lots of stuff there. What did eBay have in mind to replace it?? More "Buy It Now" auctions?? What was their business model supposed to be, meanin post-"half.com going away" (which isnt' gonna happen now, of course). Just curious... -
My problem is that I know all about this stuff, but from purely an academic standpoint. I worked in IT as a programmer/analyst for nearly 10 years. But I hardly did any programming (practically none). I was mostly a business analyst, doing "business requirements gathering", software testing and config, end-user training, and the like. As a result, intellectually, I know all about partitioning, and such. And couw's suggestion about putting the OS and your data on separate partitions makes complete and total sense. But, technically, I don't know squat. I mean, I'm still running Windows ME, so what does that tell you??? Like most people, I love to play with computers. But when it comes to the care and feeding part, I'm pretty much a lost cause.

LF: new Conns, best deal 'on-line' or otherwise??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Wow, that's cheap!! (Relatively speaking, of course). That's even better than a Borders' brick-n-mortar with a 25% discount (which comes out to about $14.45 --- assuming 7% sales-tax. Thanks!!! ( Or does anybody have anything better than $13.79?? ) -
OK, if I'm only gonna spring for a couple of the new Conns (probably only the Hill and Jack Wilson titles, for now), where's/how's the best way to get them at a price that's at least reasonable?? I know, I should probably wait for a 25%-off sale at TowerRecords.com. But assuming one of those sales doesn't come around for another two or maybe three months, what are my other best options?? And since I'm only getting two of them (and probably nothing else), I don't want to get eaten alive with shipping costs. Or maybe hope for some kind of 15%-off sale at Borders soon?? (20% would be better, but those come around much less frequently) -- and get them at a brick-n-mortar Borders, and save myself the shipping costs?? Overall, I'd like to get the two of them for no more than $30 total, one way or another.

By the way, although I do like the Henderson/Shaw Lighthouse material, am I the only one who finds this band to be a bit on the ragged side?? Don't get me wrong, they're good, even "damn good" here and there. But personally I find the Lighthouse recordings to be nowhere near as "GREAT!!! " as I would normally expect from Joe and Woody. In other words, as they are I give these recordings a strong B+ as a letter-grade --- when what I would really like for them to be, is straight A/A+ material. Who's with me on this??
-
Don't know if this is from The Lighthouse or not (far as I know, nobody knows for sure), but supposedly Tony Waters (congas) is on the Lighthouse date, but Waters isn't on the "Jazz Patterns" bootleg (or at least he can't be heard on the bootleg). Neither "Punjab" nor "Power To The People" are on the Joe Henderson box (or on this new Lighthouse release), and "Power To The People' in particular really lets everyone stretch out. It covers an entire side of the bootleg LP, and probably goes on for 20 minutes. Also, "Power To The People" is one of my very favorite Milestone-era Joe tunes. Anybody know of any CD-issue of "Jazz Patterns"?? Not looking (or expecting) so much a legit release of this material, but something like a European gray-market issue (Jazz-door, Jazz-up, or one of those labels)?? Sidebar: weren't most of those labels from Italy??
