  1. Here's a picture of me, and one of my jazz heroes...
  2. Man, I love that new cover for the Hill. Sweet!!!
  3. I don't have a specific date (or dates), that I'm looking for. (Or at least not yet -- maybe I'll get such a list together and post it here.) BUT, I have been giving some thought to trying to find some LP's (or just the jackets, actually -- even if the vinyl is missing), for some of my very favorite BN dates from the 60's, particularly the late 60s. (I'm wanting to display them, probably frame them -- probably for the walls of the staircase going from the first floor of our house, to the 2nd --- something like that.) Wouldn't mind some Andrew Hill, of course (probably any of the Reid Miles designs of Hill covers, "Black Fire" in particular). And maybe some Larry Young. (I'll drop some more names into this thread later.) I'll have to look through one of the complete BN covers web-sites, and pick out some specific titles I'd like to find. But, more to my main question... Were any, many, or most of the more 'progressive' dates (which I assume didn't sell nearly as well as the more 'mainstream'/'straight-ahead' dates), were any/many/most of them reissued as Liberty LP pressings, or as pressings in the 70's??? Since I'm only really in need of the jackets (though I'm not adverse to getting the vinyl too, as long as I'm not paying a mint for it), I'd be more than happy to put up with non-original LP issues of these titles. (Assuming, of course, that the covers of the reissues (later pressings) look decent enough.) For instance, I already have a Liberty-era LP (maybe even 70's issue - how can I tell??) of Sam Rivers "Fuschia Swing Song", which will work quite nicely. I also have an original Tyrone Washington "Natural Essence" LP, with vinyl that's seen better days (but the jacket's in good shape). Were Andrew Hill's dates reissued much over the years on vinyl?? (Or I guess I'm really asking if there were many additional pressings, particularly after the start of the Liberty era.) How about any of Larry Young's last four sessions. (I know, Mother Ship didn't have a good cover, so I guess I mean the 3 of the four last sessions with interesting covers.) Thanks!!!
  4. Any more Zappa/Miles or Zappa/Coltrane connections to be found??
  5. Yeah, but that Zappa/Shepp thing was officially released by Zappa. (Not talking a bootleg here.)
  6. Considering that these are both "official" projects, and the Shepp is a "legitimate bootleg", I think that THIS should be the "official" answer to the Coltrane connection! "Ascension" wasn't an "official project"???
  7. Depending on the sets, I'd go more like $21 or $22 per CD. (Something to be said for getting a volume discount, if you're buying a whole hell of a bunch of sets -- all at one time.) But, again, that's depending on what sets we're talking about, clearly. (And so then maybe $25 is better, guessing that there's some older sets we're talking about here.) (I almost said $20 at first, but forgot that Mosaic bumped their prices up to $16 a year or two ago, hence my $21 or $22 statement up above.)
  8. Certainly not common knowledge, that's for sure. I never knew he painted until I stumbled on the page. But I was sure I could yank all you guys along for another day or so, if I had gotten that Miles and Trane hint in earlier. To your GREAT credit, 7/4, you got it NOT by random guessing, but by having some personal knowledge of the artist in question. (And some personal connection to his obscure artwork too!!!) BRAVO!!!!!
  9. Zappa didn't really do that many drugs, from everything I've read. He probably tried a number of things, perhaps a time or two each. But other than chain-smoking, I think he was pretty straight. Yeah, he probably drank, but probably not to excess. He was too much of a workaholic for drugs. …again, from what I've read.
  10. Yup, that's the one I was thinking of. Thanks for playing, everybody. Wish I had gotten that "Miles and Trane" hint in before 7/4 got the answer. I think that would have gotten people thinking about the jazz-side of things -- and would have kept people away from guessing Zappa as quickly. Round of drinks for everyone!!!!
  11. OK, I wasn't think of Victor Feldmen either. But a 'gold star' for Sidewinder: Another one, please.
  12. Actually, George Duke wasn't who I was thinking of. George Duke is a better answer than mine (a more 'obvious' one), but it wasn't the one I was thinking of. So, Sangry -- you got both connections. (YEAH!!! ) BUT, your NEW challenge is to find another connection between Frank and Miles.
  13. Correct, about the Coltrane connection. Now how about Miles??
  14. Oh hell, I should come clean. I was posting the "Miles and Coltrane" hint before I saw this post from 7/4. It was Zappa. ...and here's where I found it. OK, so 7/4 got the answer. ("Yeah 7/4!!!! ) So who'll be the first person to come up with... 1) who Zappa played with, who recorded with Miles... AND... 2) who Zappa played with, who recorded with Coltrane. (Probably goes without saying, but it's NOT the same person in both cases.) PS: The second I saw 7/4's "Zappa" post, I PM-ed him real quick to delete it. But it was up there to long to let this drag on that much longer, without somebody in the end saying -- "Hey, didn't somebody already say Zappa???"
  15. OK, here's a hint... The artist at one time played with someone that recorded with Miles Davis… …and he also played with someone who recorded with John Coltrane.
  16. Don't try women. And nobody's got it yet.
  17. The painting dates from 1961.
  18. Still not Lyle Mays. Edit: And not Joe Henderson either.
  19. Rock Center beat me to it, but I'll reiterate... ...still not Don Cherry.
  20. Dare I suggest that this could well be the boldest attempt at Spam that we've seen around these parts, in many a year?? And, if so, I might add (spoken in a good British accent)... You, sir (Mr. Reynolds), have balls. Bravo!!!!
