Seems to me there needs to be a serious penulty here. Not "banned for life" - but something like banned for an entire season, meaning he can't play again until a full year from now. (FYI, I voted (above) to ban him for the rest of the season.) It's not that the penulty needs to be overly harsh, so as to prevent future players from considering doing the same thing. I mean, frankly, something like this is never 'planned' by anyone (or anyone in their right mind). That's why I didn't say "banned for life". But it is still pretty serious stuff. Players are supposed to take heat from the fans, and let it roll off them like water off a duck. Sure, it doesn't always work that way -- but to actually go so far as to throw a chair at a fan -- and at a fan who hasn't come out on the field, but is still in a legitimate "fan" section of the stadium.... That's pretty much 'out of control' in my book. I don't car what a fan says, you don't go throwing chairs at fan. So I'd say to ban him for 90 days, which is the rest of this season, plus however much time is needed at the start of next season, to make a full 90-day suspention.

Probably can't make any of the KC events. I've got dress-rehearsals with the KC Symphony on Thursday and Friday evenings until after 10pm (way down at JCCC), so I'm out of the game both nights. Maybe could make Saturdaynight , but I know I'm busy all day that day with a couple other things (including another rehearsal), so I'm "iffy" about being able to get down The Gem that night. Wish I could, though. If either of you guys see Gerald while you're down there, you know what to do.

I'll buy you a drink sometime, if you do!! Lemme know how it goes. I think he's on from Noon to 3pm, or something like that -- on Mondays and Tuesdays only.

Ah, "graceful winning".... Don't you know it!! For the record, though, I told Gerald I wouldn't take his money --- BUT, if he wanted to 'comp' me into $50 worth of shows at The Blue Room (the big-name acts usually have a $25 cover), I was certainly open to that.

So I'm down at the best jazz club in town just now (here in Kansas City), and the last tune of the 2nd set is buggin' the hell out of me. At first I thought it was "Riot", but I don't trust that initial instinct. Somethin' like that, though, I'm pretty sure of it. Only heard the head twice through, real quick, and I keep humming it back to myself to try to remember what it is. The leader of the band that night is one of the better-known local musicians here in KC. He finishes his solo, and walks off the stage towards the bar to get a glass of water, while the rest of the band plays on. I know the guy somewhat -- in fact, I'm down there specifically to drop off some CD's for the guy (some Charles Tolliver discs I found in St. Louis for him a couple days ago). Knowing he's in the middle of a tune, I don't expect to chat any more than just a quick "Hi, good to see you, talk to you in a minute". But I think I've got enough time to ask him what the tune is. He says "One Finger Snap", and I immediately say that I knew it was a Herbie tune. Nah, he says, Freddie wrote it. No, that's Herbie's. Freddie played it a lot with Herbie, but it's Herbie's tune. But he swears it's Freddie's tune. And he's so sure, he wants me to put my money where my mouth is. I'm not much of a betting man, but I was about 98% sure I was right -- so I ask how much the bet is for. Gerald D. says $50.00. Damn!! I don't usually even bet $10 or even $5 on anything. $50.00 is more than I've ever bet on anything, ever!! - far as I can remember. But somehow, I take the bet (cuz I was pretty damn sure it was Herbie's tune). Gerald walks back up on the bandstand, and finishes the set. We chat briefly at the bar, where I give him the Tolliver discs, and we agree to do lunch sometime (which is great – cuz I know Gerald, but not really that well). And I remind him about our bet... ...so then he asks his drummer who wrote "One Finger..."?? Drummer doesn't know. So he asks his bass-player. Bass-player says he thinks it's Herbie. Gerald says, no, no, no!! - it's Freddie!! Bass-player backs down and says maybe it was Freddie -- but he thought it was Herbie. I tell him I'll check when I get home (I was about to leave anyway, gotta an early morning tomorrow), and Gerald says no, we'll settle this, once and for all, for good, right now. And then he gets out his cell-phone and calls Bobby. As in Bobby Watson. (I guess Bobby was probably still up, but it was like 11:30 at night, so who knows?) I only hear half the conversation, but suddenly Gerald's all "no, no, no man - I mean "One Finger Snap" - you know...", and he sings the head to Bobby over the phone. Bobby confirms the origin of the tune. The look on Gerald's face was priceless!!! Ah, sweet victory. B-) Joe and Paul -- next time you see Gerald D., you each gotta ask him who wrote "One Finger Snap". (And I wanna hear back what he says. )

A kind suggestion for you to stay away from... ...the Cowell album/CD on Steeplechase called "Setup" (from 1993). The trombone player on the date has some serious intonation problems on this date, that are often very distracting. And (IMHO) it was a pretty 'off-day' for Eddie Henderson and Rick Margitza both. Found a used copy on CD a couple years ago, and after I gave it a chance (and probably listened to it half-a-dozen times), I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I know, I know -- "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". But seriously, this release really should have had more rehearsal time, or something. The date just did NOT click at all for me (and in this case, I really think it was the date's fault, and not mine). That said, I've loved nearly everything else I've ever heard from Mr. Cowell.

As luck would have it, I picked up a used copy of "Marionettes on a High Wire" -- for only $8.00 (while I was in St. Louis a couple days ago). Had never heard of Baikida Carroll before, but I was very impressed with the disc. Very hard-blowing stuff, from both Carroll, and I was also very impressed with the tenor player, Erica Lindsay (a girl, no less!!), who I had never heard of before either. A great disc that I look forward to hearing again soon (just gave it a spin on the drive back to Kansas City, probably listen to it again this weekend).

I've got nearly every CD by 80's New Wave darlings The Fixx. That includes three or four legit live albums (who knew they had so many???), and four or five studio albums from after they left MCA (meaning material recorded in the 90's, and even since 2000. Plus, of course, nearly their entire run on MCA in the 80's --- which is what they're really known for by the general public, pretty much exclusively.

After two hours on the phone with the tech-support people at Time Warner Cable (RoadRunner), and two new cable-modems since Wednesday morning -- I'm now kinda, sorta, half-way back in business. But I'm not out of the woods yet, and not by a longshot. My access is stull sluggish as all get-out, and my firewall is about half-way hosed. It works, but it's been banged up pretty bad, defending the attacks. (Not my words, that's what the tech-gal said. The fire-wall will shut parts of itself down to prevent certain kinds of attacks.) Not sure if I totally believe that, but I am planning to download a new (different) firewall later tonight. Got a service-tech coming over in about 4 hours, to double-check the line and all the hardware. Of course the on-site tech can't diagnose firewall issues (probably), so all they'll be able to do is elimiate the possibility (remote, at best), that any of this is line/hardware related. What a pain in the ass. Half the time pages won't load gifs or jpegs. Some pages load slower than when I had dog-shit-slow dial-up. What a pain!!!

Went from close to 8,000 (less than 8,100) all the way up to 8,800 attacks (total), in the space of like 5 minutes. Nearly zero gifs and/or jpegs are loading when I do finally get a page to come up. Can't even begin to get something like cnn.com to load. Many pages are just timing out. Can't believe that I was even able to start this thread. I've tried rebooting dozens of times, and rebooting my cable-modem too, dozens of times too. Sometimes I'll get access back, but even then -- it's still really slow. But most of the time it's mega-slow, like slower than when I used dial-up. (I'm on Time-Warner's "Roadrunner".) Why would I be a target for something like this???? 4th-attempt to post this...

What the fuck?? My internet access has been up and down all night (and from what my wife says, today too), and when it's down -- it turns out that it's just really, REALLY slow. And I just looked at my fire-wall (ZoneAlarm, the free version), and it says it's blocked like 8,000+ intrusions, and the number (8,000) was going up and up by the second -- like I was being attacked as I watched the fire-wall control pannel. What the hell?? How can I stop this???? HELP!!!!

A modest suggestion: Can we limit this to albums by leaders who recorded minimally as sidemen prior to their debut album as a leader?? There's plenty of albums by guys who did LOTS of sideman work, before ever getting to lead. I think the key is to find the debut albums where the leader had only ever recorded maybe two or three times before as a sideman (5 times at most!!) ----- where the line-up of the debut was particularly impressive.

I have several of his symphonies, recordings both on Naxos and CPO. Seem to remember that there were a number of musical similarities between Antheil and Shostakovich. Haven't listened in a while, but remember this being some pretty decent music. I'll revisit some, and get back to you...

Yup, definitely -- the recent purple-velvet Hendrix box is really a winner!!! As a long-time Hendrix fan (by my senior year in high-school, circa-1987, I had something like 40 or nearly 50 Hendrix LP's, including plenty of bootlegs), I have to say that this box set includes most of the very best tracks from many of those bootlegs. I can't tell you how many crappy-sounding double-LP Hendrix boots I bought (sometimes for up to $40, which wasn't cheap for somebody in high-school), that only had like one track each that was really worth having (a some particular tune Jimi only played once or twice, ever!!). And now I've got this wonderful box set that collects up nearly all of those must-have-tracks, and presents them in wonderful sound too. Best rock box-set I've ever encountered.

This one's still crackin' me up, even a day later.
