  1. To elaborate a bit further. As much as I like Andrew Hill's music (the actually music itself), what I love is the process of listening and getting into Andrew Hill's music. His records always reveal themselves to me over time - and sometimes a long period of time. And if I haven't heard them for two or three months -- it's halfway like a brand new experience putting them on. (Or at least this is true to a much greater degree then almost any artist I can think of.) I'm not sure if Andrew Hill music is "all that, and a bag of chips" --- but my experience trying to get into it certainly is.
  2. Me too!! And come to think of it, "perfection" isn't all it's cracked up to be either.
  3. I'll pick up the Hill on Day #1, for sure, cuz you all know what a nut I am about his music. And I've never heard the Jack Wilson, so that's a serious must-buy on Day #1 for me too (especially since Lee Morgan's on there!!) The others are a combination of 1) dates I already have on CD on Mosaics (the Sam Rivers and Larry Young), both of which I'll probably get eventually - but I'm in no rush. And 2) dates I need to hear first, before I'll pull the trigger (the Hutcherson, and especially the Horace Silvers). I'm a little curious about "Now!", but a buddy of mine has this on LP - and played a couple tracks for me once -- and it was certainly something that I had a mixed reaction to (to put it mildly). And the on-line samples I've heard of a few cuts from the Horace Silvers makes me very skittish about ever buying over two hours of that material, which I doubt I would listen to all that often.
  4. Who's on the cover of this particular Down Beat?? (The one with the Bley BFT??) I need to take a look for this, before it goes off the shelves at the bookstores. Thanks!!
  5. Sold!!! If it's still available, I'll take it. About to send you a PM. Thanks!! -- Tom
  6. My wallet wishes they were RVG's, but I am totally understanding of Blue Note needing to charge more to release these kinds of sessions, since they are much more obscure, and of less "general" interest to the jazz-loving public. Wouldn't we all pay Import (Japanese) prices to get some of these on CD?? If so, then we should be willing to pay a few dollars more to get them as domestic issues. They're worth that much to me. And those specific titles that aren't, I simply won't buy. But in most cases (with only a few exceptions), the Conns are the titles I'm most excited about getting.
  7. Looking again at the sessionography (up in the very first post of this thread), I think there are basically five albums' worth of material there --- with two of those "albums" probably clocking in with around 50 to 60 minutes of material each. (I'm counting the two sessions with Tolliver as being one long-ish "album" --- and then the two sessions with String Quartet as also being one long-ish "album".) If the remaining three sessions (meaning the first three sessions) are about 40 minutes each (average), then that's... 60 + 60 = 2 hours 40 + 40 + 40 = 2 hours ...4 hours total. Not knowing anything about the lengths of each session, there could possibly be up to "four-and-one-half" hours of music here. But my guess is that there's closer to four hours, and possibly just shy of four hours (which would maybe fit perfectly on 3 CD's). Also, nothing to say that they couldn't make an exception with this particular Select, and have it be 4 CD's long.
  8. Bertrand, I answered your question over in the Andrew Hill Select thread. Link: RIGHT HERE...
  9. Just answering Bertrand's question, from the other Conn thread... I have not confirmed anything specific, track-wise, with Michael. The set was so far off in the future, it seemed a bit too early to get into specifics. He did say that it would (supposedly), be everything thus far not yet released on CD, including all the unreleased sessions. Whether that's every track from every session, I couldn't say for sure. Looking at the sessions (see the first post in this thread), I do believe that everything could possibly fit on 3 CD's. I haven't look in a while, but I remember glancing at everything, and thinking it was plausable that it would all fit. Remember, there's up to 79 minutes per CD, which is a total of about four hours of music. Looking at the sessions, and the number of tunes at each session -- I think four hours would probably cover all of it. Anyone else think otherwise??
  10. "Dance With Death" will NOT be included in the upcoming Andrew Hill Mosaic Select. Link: For the specific contents of the Andrew Hill Select (and related discussion), PLEASE GO TO THIS THREAD!!! <--- The complete discography for the Hill Select is now included at the very beginning of the thread found at this link, in the first post). Happy, Happy Day!!!!
  11. From CNN.com/HEALTH. (But given the headline, I don't suggest opening this link while you're at work.)
  12. And Jim, where did/do you file 's recordings?? Still waiting on the Sonny Blount question too.
  13. Hey Jim, where in the alphabet do you file Sonny Blount's recordings??? "B", "S", or "R"???
  14. Haven't a clue. (And probably not the first time either. )
  15. Wanna elaborate, Chuck?? You've been sour on Strata East and Tolliver before, but haven't ever said much beyond the fact you think they're overrated (as a label), and that Tolliver is/was/always-was overrated too. Thanks!!
  16. Kirk Lightsey and Harold Danko: Shorter by Two (Sunnyside) Recorded on July 19th & 21st, 1983, but released in 1989 (copyright 1989, anyway). Also, my CD of this says 'Made In France' - but I'm sure it was probably released on disc in the U.S. as well. Great album -- It was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread. Edit: Free For All beat me to it with the album cover, but I gave you a link to the AMG review, so there!!!
  17. Depends on which one ya got more of --- I'd file all of it under that one!!
  18. Nobody else has this CD?? Spontoon said he'd check when he got home tonight. -- Rooster
  19. Quick, does anybody have any opinions about the CD issue of John Hicks "Steadfast" (Strata East, 1975)??? Is there more than one CD issue?? (It looks like the one Dusty has for sale is the one on Bellaphon, being that it's from Germany. Has Charly even issued this on CD???) Anyway, Spontoonious and I were just having lunch, and I mentioned that a friend (on the board) was going to be up in Chicago, and might be picking this up for me at Dusty. Spontoonious said that the CD issue of this that he had (on Bellaphon), sounded really, REALLY bad. He thought it was taken from vinyl, and warped vinyl at that!! Any opinions out there of the CD issue of this title?? Any advice within the next 12 hours would be much appreciated!!!!! John Hicks -- Steadfast . . . CD . . . $9.99 (Item: 84626) Strata East (Germany), 1975 Condition: New Copy View Cart Beautiful solo work from John Hicks -- one of the few straight pianists that can hold our attention in a setting like this for so long! The album's deeply introspective, but never overindulgent -- and features Hicks on a variety of short numbers that include some beautiful lyrical originals, and a few very well chosen standards. Titles include "Pensativa", "One For John Mixon", "Soul Eyes", "The Bright Eyes", "Serenade", and "Steadfast". (From the Jazz CD (E-I) page.)
  20. Doesn't look that way from the calendar: http://dakotacooks.com/calendar.htm Would love it if you guys came to town! I'm a big fan of the CD. I sent them an email. I will try phoning them soon. Thank you! I know both a drummer and a bass player, who are both on the current Dakata schedule for a couple dates this month (from the link above). They're both local guys, Chris Bates (bass), and J.T. Bates (drums) -- yes, they're brothers (both in their early 30's by now). I may be able to dig up some contact info for either or both of them too, e-mail or perhaps phone numbers. Jim, let me know if this is an avenue worth perusing, in terms of their suggestions for getting your promo stuff in front of the right people at The Dakota. I know them well enough that they’d probably be able to make some contacts on your behalf too. (They were both in a band, The Motion Poets (formerly The Little Big Band), that crashed at my place about a half-a-dozen times in the mid-90’s -- whenever they played in Kansas City. Long story how that happened -- but the short story is that they’re all great guys, and they’d probably go to bat for you.) I know a couple other guys in the Twin Cities area too, of a similar nature (local guys, great musicians). So just say the word if you have any trouble getting the kind of feedback you’re looking for from The Dakota people. -- Tom
  21. You got that right. That BBQ chicken pizza I had at 1am last night had it's revenge this morning. TMI!!!
  22. Thanks couw!! Actually, I just went ahead and created a new Amazon account, and figured that would get me into the order enough to figure out the shipping charge. BUT NO, I had to enter my credit card number first, and it was only on the last screen of the order that they said what the shipping would be. Same as half.com, basically, although it appears they don't give you a break on shipping multiple items from the same seller.
  23. I'm trying to decide between something that's OOP, either from half.com, or through Amazon's used marketplace. What's the standard shipping rate for one used disc through Amazon?? And do they cut you a break for shipping additional discs from the same seller?? (Like half.com does. Half.com's rates: $2.50 for the first disc, $1.50 for every disc after that from the same seller.) Can't seem to find the shipping cost info on Amazon's site, I've lost my Amazon password -- and their "I forgot my password" thing doesn't work for me (some crap about me having to enter in the last X digits of the last credit card I used for a purchase from them, and they want some other info too). Hell, maybe I'll just go with half.com, but if anybody happens to know Amazon's used-CD shipping rates, thanks!! -- Rooster
  24. I've got the Cherry Mosaic, and my favorite of his three BN albums is, by far, "Complete Communion". The other two aren't bad, but if I had to pick one...
