Howdy all. A friend of mine is trying to track down a new (or used) copy of Art Blakey's "Ugetsu" - and he's specifically looking for the Japanese 20-bit mastering of this title. Anyone here know where I can find one, or anyone here maybe have one to offer?? Thanks!!

Have no idea what she's up to these days, but I happen to own one of those Rebecca Coupe Franks CD's (cover is pictured below, but no AMG review, unfortunately). It certainly is a mighty fine date (got it for $1 at a radio-station promo CD sale), and I would welcome the chance to hear Franks in other contexts, or further albums from her. EDIT: FYI, both of Rebecca Coupe Franks' CD's are available from half.com, for pennies on the dollar. I haven't heard "All Of A Sudden", but her other disc ("Suit Of Armor") is well worth picking up, especially for less than $5. Get on it!!! EDIT2: There are audio-samples of both her albums on the AMG, HERE and HERE. (At least there appear to be. I can't get the samples to play, can anybody else???)

Not me. I've got all the metal-spine versions, and I'm sticking with them. The only drawbacks are that occasionally it's pretty hard to read the text of the liner-notes (when the background color nearly matches the color of the text, for a few words here and there). But, other than that, I'm pretty happy with them. The only positives I see about the new versions is that the liner-notes look to be quite a bit easier to read. But, I'm firmly in the camp that prefers box-sets to be made up of a bunch of jewel-boxes, or some kind of packaging that lets me file the box in with the rest of my CD's*. (Meaning they're not more than one inch taller than the height of a standard jewel-box.) These new Miles boxes, like the Herbie BN box, are a real pain in the ass -- as far as how you go about filing them. * For the record, this DOESN'T mean I like the Bill Evans Complete Verve packaging. But the metal-spine Miles boxes aren't nearly that bad.

Having heard (recordings of) quite a few live versions of Miles playing this tune in the late 50's and very early 60's (up through '61)... ...but then also in '65, '67, and '69 -- I have to say that for me, Miles nearly always hits this one out of the park. (Not always, but usually.) In particular, the opening of the verison from Paris (on Nov. 6th, 1967), is one of the most stunning things I've ever heard.

Hello??? Gas is something like $4 or $5 per gallon in Europe. We are (and have always been) spoiled with gas prices here in the U.S. that are, frankly artificially low. I mean, why the hell does gas cost less than bottled-water in this country!! And we spend $3 and $4 for pint-sized fancy coffee drinks, right and left. Why should gasoline, something that's NOT an unlimited commodity (much as some people would like to think otherwise), why should it cost only like $1 or $1.25 per gallon??? /thinking we're just spoiled here in the U.S. - doncha think???

Picking up on the last half of the last paragraph of the article... Wayne was also talkin' movies (and movie soundtracks as well), the one time I met and spoke with him briefly. It was after one of his duo (1+1) gigs with Herbie, back around September of 1997. More specifically, I remember him talking about the movie "The English Patient". (What he said about "The English Patient" exactly, I no longer remember though.) That's for posting such a wonderful article.

So, if not Sony, then what brand(s) can be trusted on the low-end (price-wise)?? Or do you pretty much get what you pay for, regardless of brand??

Mosaic often (usually?) has blank boxes too, which have no graphics for any particular set. I don't have any like this, but have heard of others getting 'blank' boxes before, with the appropriate plastic stuff inside, for the number of discs you have in a set (that lacks a box). (Poorly written, to be sure, but I think you see what I'm trying to say.)

OK, any opinions about this small home-theatre system?? DVD/VCR/AM/FM, the whole thing in one box, plus all the speakers (not that I'm slap-happy about how to handle all those speakers, mind you). Panasonic SC-HT810V I only mention it, cuz it was the first DVD/VCR combo that seemed to have AM/FM as well, along with whatever amplification is necessary. To tell you how green I am about home audio, in general, I've never (ever!) had a component system before, with a separate amplifier. I've always only ever owned integrated bookshelf systems (CD/cassette/AM/FM), or else just glorified boomboxes (when I was in college), and such. So handle me with kid-gloves, and speak slowly.
