  1. Wow, never saw this one before. Got the image from a closed eBay auction...
  2. Howdy all, Right of first refusal on this one goes to Peter Johnson, who I still need to send some LP's to one of these days (though perhaps if this Patton LP is something you want, Peter, it will have been a good thing that I haven't yet sent you those other LP's). Anyway, I was killing some time in a record store today, here in Kansas City, and spotted a Patton "That Certain Feeling" LP in fine condition today. It appears to be a first pressing Liberty issue, with the name "Rudy Van Gelder" stamped in the inner-most part of the vinyl, and "PROMOTIONAL COPY" stamped on the back of the LP cover. The cover is probably in "VG+" condition, perhaps even closer to "EX-". The vinyl itself was in perfect condition (best as I could see), except for one pretty minor blemish that looks like it won't affect the playback. (I could have the store play that track to verify that it will play, if you like). The store wants $18 for it. I have no idea if that's a decent price or not. It seems kinda high to me, but then again - I'm a real cheapskate, and this may in fact be quite a steal. (I don't normally buy LP's, so other than eBay - I have no idea what the market is bringing for titles like this. The last three times this LP sold on eBay, it went for $22, $26, and $35) Here's a pic of the cover, although this pic is from a closed eBay auction, and it's NOT an actual picture of the LP I found today. PS: Peter - I found it at the same store where I spotted that Leo Parker LP that you bought some time ago. They also had 2 or 3 pre-Liberty era Jimmy Smith titles in the $20 range, in "VG+" condition (roughtly). Don't remember the titles, but I could easily go back and get the details for you.
  3. And don't forget the "soul jazz" banjoists either, you dig!!
  4. Hey Conn500, are you aware of this recent AAJ thread?? Contest: Poor Topic Ideas
  5. How about Roland Kirk's "Domino" on CD??
  6. I have (or rather, at least had) two copies of "Lift Every Voice" on CD. I loaned one to a friend, who I think thought it was a gift - and now he's in Hong Kong for the next year, as his wife is now a dancer in the Honk Kong Ballet. But if it turns out that I still have two of these, one is most certainly yours, Conn500. I'll try to take a look for it sometime over the next week or so. Great disc, one that has grown and grown on me over the years.
  7. How much are tickets??
  8. I can see that by the time the Jack Johnson box comes out, that Borders will have probably had multiple training sessions for all their employees (along with retraining for the flunkies), on how not to accept this coupon, under even the most dire of circumstances. But I'm probably still gonna try anyway!!!
  9. Shit.
  10. You'll probably get a range of opinions about "Far Away Lands". I think it's a pretty good album, but not really quite in that "incredible" range. One of those things that's well worth picking up if you see if for anything less than $12, or perhaps even $14. Whether it's worth $18, however, really depends on how much you're into the specific sidemen on the album, and into other similar Hank LP's from the same general timeframe. If it's any help, I like both "Slice of the Top" and "Third Season" better than "Far Away Lands". I guess I'd probably give "Slice..." about 4 stars, and "Third Season" about 4.5 stars, and "Far Away..." only 3.5 stars (and I would understand if others only gave it 3 stars).
  11. Well, I'm planning on trying to use the 40% off coupon on the new Miles "Jack Johnson" box next Tuesday. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't buy it for 6 months or more, since it's something that I know will be 'in print' for some time. But 40% off is too tempting not to try to go for.
  12. YARRR. In honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day, waste time playing Popcap's Seven Seas: http://www.popcap.com/gameframe.php?theGame=sevenseas
  13. They sound like they were lucky to have met each other. From the several times I've met and talked with Jason (usually only 5-10 minutes each time, always at gigs he's had here in Kansas City), and when I've exchanged a few e-mails with him (a couple times a year, at most) --- he strikes me as a very genuine, and genuinely very nice guy. I hope that they're very happy together, for a very, very long time.
  14. Yeah, but are we there yet???
  15. Call a vet, especially if the dog got hit in the face. Even if you don't take the dog into the vet, the vet may have some important advice to follow.
  16. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  17. Wow, I had not expected to have the board back up so quickly. Thanks Jim!!!! Free For All called me last night (we both live in Kansas City), and said: hey man, sumpthins gone real bad with the board. Well, I'm real glad it was so short-lived.
  18. Do let us know how it turns out. We'll all be very interested to know!! - I'm sure.
  19. Just testing the pic upload function...
  20. I just noticed that the AAJ board is back up again, though it might just be for testing. The "front page" now says... FYI, the most recent post there (except for a couple posts just today, probably just within the last hour) dates back to 18-MAY-2003 11:51 PM, although it's possible there are some incremental backups they haven't applied yet.

  22. Anthony Cox - Dark Metals (Antilles/Polygram 1992), with... Anthony Cox - Bass Dewey Redman - Tenor Michael Cain - Piano Billy Higgins - Drums, Guitar, Vocals Includes some of the best Dewey Redman on record, IMHO. I think a few others here have this CD as well, and can back this up. OOP probably, but highly recommended. (Yes, Billy Higgins really does play guitar and sing on this CD, on two cuts - both Brazilian folk tunes - and does so with great panash.)
  23. Actually, I have given a passing thought to printing out color versions of the best covers from this thread, and sending them to Michael -- just for the heck of it. I probably won't, but the thought had crossed my mind, in terms of getting Michael to think again about the "Train Wreck", and "Chained", for possible release someday.
  24. This is barely related at all (other than my question is, in fact, about "being related" to a famous jazz musician)... But I occasionally wonder what happened to Leon Henderson, Joe Henderson's brother - who played tenor on those two Kenny Cox BN albums in the late 60's. Were Leon and Joe at all close, and whatever became of Leon?? He was at least a decent player on those Cox LP's (and I think he was pretty interesting), and I would have liked to have heard more from him. The AMG only lists him as having played on both Kenny Cox LP's, and (straingly enough) one MC5 LP ("High Time", from 1971 --- BTW, I'm totally unfamiliar with MC5), and that's it. It also mentions that Leon worked with Kenny Cox, Charles Moore, Daniel Spencer, Ron Brooks, MC5 --- but it's too late for me to look up Moore, Spencer, and Brooks - to see if Leon is mentioned in any reviews of any albums of theirs (maybe I'll check tomorrow).
  25. Well worth getting. Both the SQ and performances are excellent!!! $50 is a fairly decent price, though I've occasionally seen it go for closer to $40-$45 on eBay (not including shipping charges).
