Jazz (today) in Iowa, Missiouri, and the Midwest
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Even if the cover was only $10??? Unfortunately the answer is Zero. Kansas City is too conservative a town, musically speaking. -

7th Heaven was cool when I first moved here around 1994, but they have steadily declined every year since. They still have some bootleg CD's, last time I was there, but when I saw that they were selling promo CD's (often multiple copies of the same title!!), for like $17.99 each --- that's when I said to hell with 7th Heaven. They charge the sky-high prices that they do because in the part of town that they are, most of their customers don't have cars in order to drive to other stores offering the same music at cheaper prices. When I asked somebody there (a manger) about the promos, he said "why bother, who can tell the difference?", and when I suggested they might sell those promos at a lower price, like $9 or $10 (which would be similar to what a used CD would normally sell at, and what most used CD stores sell promos at), the guy looked at me like I was from Mars. They sell what they sell at the prices they sell them for, because they can get away with it. Worst vibe of any record/CD store I've ever been in anywhere in the Kansas City area. I still drop in there once or maybe twice a year, just to see what bootlegs they might have, but really - I always walk out of the place thinking I've been to about the worst record store I've ever been to in all my years. (And that's not because of the part of town they're in -- but rather their attitude towards their customers, which sucks - even on a good day.) -
Geeze, now I've seen it all. This (below) was a full-page ad in the most recent free weekly newspaper here in Kansas City. None of the bolding or sizing is of my doing, the bolding and sizing (as I've presented the ad below) was in the ad pretty much this same way. It was a full-page ad, just inside the front-cover of the paper (a tabloid-style paper, page-sizes similar to that of the NY Post or the Chicago Sun Times). I might add that this store probably sells about 60% brand-new CD's vs. about 40% used (at least based on the inventory in the store), so this isn't a "primarily used CD's" store (where 80% of their CD's are used). Also, I'm pretty darn sure that when CD's are returned to them (via the process described above), that they're probably rewrapping them (in shrink-wrap), and then re-selling the discs as brand-new, at the same price as the first time they sold it. I say this because I know for a fact that this place (at least the main location on Troost) has the frequent habit of selling promo CD's (with the barcodes hole-punched) as if they are brand-new product, meaning they sell them at full list price - because they say that their customers don't know the difference, so who cares?? (had a manager there actually tell me that one time, a few years ago). 'Bout dropped my teeth when I read this over dinner tonight at the pizza parlor.

Some other guy named Joe Henderson - not the same guy. (The guy in 1962 is a singer, if I remember right.) Can't remember the details, but Sangry and others here are in the know.

All the E's are too busy, out being with actual people, in real life!!! It's only I's that spend this much time on the Internet, on boards and in chatrooms, where we can "be with people" without having to actually "be with people". (I'm half kidding, of course --- but there may be something to this, now that I think about it. )

Joe Henderson up to 31-Dec-69, incl. sideman dates
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Yeah, I pretty much had the same thought. I know, some who really like "Am I Blue" - but like it or not, Joe's not the primary factor in whether "Am I Blue" works or not. -
Got mine (BFT#1) in the mail a couple hours ago, and popped it right in. I think I've about got it all figured out, except I'm having some trouble with the bass player on track 4, and the drummer on track 7. And oh - is there a harmonica burried way down in the mix on track 11?? I'm having some trouble with that one too. Other than that, I think I've got it all figured out.... But I guess I should keep the line-ups of each track to myself, until everyone else has a chance to weigh in. Wouldn't want to spoil the fun of everyone having to guess for themselves!!

Joe Henderson up to 31-Dec-69, incl. sideman dates
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
OK, OK, there's maybe one date I can think of that I haven't warmed to all that much, and that's Freddie Roach's "Brown Sugar" with Joe. But I'm not sure if that's because of Joe's performance, or cuz of other factors (or maybe both). -
Goofy stuff on the web

Talk about Joe Henderson in the Sept. 2nd RVG thread got me thinking (which is often a dangerous thing!! ). Are there any dates where Joe had an off day in the studio, from among the dozens and dozens of dates he's on in the 60's??? (Let's keep the cut-off as Dec. 31st 1969 (so I mean everything he recorded before 1970), cuz I know some people have some issues with some of his later Milestone material, although many don't (including me!!).) I'm not sure I own every date he ever recorded in the 60's, but I think I have damn near every one. For example, as much as we all love Lee Morgan, we all know even he had a couple dates here and there, where Lee was certainly good, but maybe not quite as great as he usually was. But then, to my mind, Joe almost never falls below a 4-star performance on anything he recorded between 1963-1969. (5-stars being the top of the scale.)

An excellent interview too, I might add. I had seen this before, and was glad you reminded me of it. Lot's of good food-for-thought.

Far as I know, his first time on record was on Kenny Dorham's "Una Mas" (April 1st, 1963), followed shortly by Grant Green's "Am I Blue" (May 16th, 1963), and Joe's own "Page One" (June 3rd, 1963). Anybody know of any Joe on record any earlier than "Una Mas"??? I don't think there is any.

I'm an INTP too!!!

Got mine used several years ago, for about $45 as I recall, maybe even closer to $40. I was in an otherwise crappy used-CD store in Davenport Iowa, and there it was.

Night all!!! And sleep well everybody.... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz............ -_-

"Free For All", you need an Avatar my friend. Get on it!!!

100% agreement. All of Joe's leader dates for BN are stunning.
-
"Inner Urge" is a close second for me, just behind "Mode For Joe". Simply stunning, in all respects. The three Henderson tunes are amazing, and everyone is playing right at the top of their game. Put it this way, I think "Inner Urge" is every bit as good as any and all of Wayne Shorter's "sax plus piano trio" recordings on BN in the 60's, and it don't get any better than that!!

Hey, when it's something this important, I'm here and on the case!!! SS, let's put it this way: You skip this one on Tuesday, and you're banned from the board. Simple as that!!
-
How to put this delicately... OMFG!!!!!!! "Mode for Joe" is THE Joe Henderson album to get, of all time. You need to start camping out right now, right outside on the steps of your favorite shiny-disc emporium, so you can be the very first one in line to get "Mode For Joe" when the store first opens, when it comes out on Tuesday. It is TOTALLY "the shit", in the very best sense of the word. Do not hesitate, not even for half a nanosecond, to pick this one up. In my book, "Mode For Joe" is probably one of the 10 best Blue Note albums ever released. B) :rsmile:

And now for something completely different...

Well, I guess I haven't listened closely enough to hear any between-songs stage-talk. I've only had the disc since Monday, and I think I've listened to it twice.

I've heard a few complaints about the sound-quality on the new Moran, but frankly, I haven't noticed all that much. But then again, I have some pretty low-end stereo equipment (a cheap boombox, and a nice but relatively inexpensive bookshelf system). Maybe on a real high-end system the SQ might be more of an issue.
