Jazz (today) in Iowa, Missiouri, and the Midwest, in medium-sized cities vs. college-towns, and I'll bump it up too. Hey Miles251, you wouldn't happen to have source for getting a tape of Andrew Hill's set at the Iowa City festival this year?? I spoke with Greg Tardy at a gig he had here in Kansas City a couple weeks ago (in early August), and he's dyin' to find a copy of that show, if possible. PM me, or send me e-mail, and I can give you Tardy's e-mail address. (The jazz critic for the Kansas City star can back this up, Tardy mentioned the same thing to him.) Oh, and welcome to the board!!! Good to have you around. Any names being knocked around for next year's Iowa City festival??? This was the first year I had been, and was VERY impressed. I'll be back, for sure!!!!

Mine is definitely Sweets, and my wife's is definitely Salty Snacks. We rarely fight over the same snacks

I hadn't either, until I happened to do a search on the key "Jason Moran" on eBay a few weeks ago, and stumbled on Sroka's disc that way. Never would have probably heard about it otherwise.
-
Noope, none of them cats. Probably a guy you never heard of - I think he's about Moran's age. Name's "Brett Sroka". Here's a thread: great disc just discovered, with Jason Moran, Brett Sroka's "Hearsay" (on FSNT)

Excellent choice!!

About to turn in. Nighty-night, all.

I thought that's what she said.

Oh boy! New tunes! So you're diggin' the Harry Whitaker side, huh? Did you find the copy that was hiding at Streetside? It really grew on me. Yup, got the one at Streetside. DAMN, what an album. Totally blown away by it. The disc I got for you is by an up-and-coming trombone player (the competition that's hot on your trail ). The bonus is that Jason Moran is a sideman on the date.

Like any good Rooster, I crow at the crack of dawn, and then go back to sleep all day (in the AC, for sure!!! ). Really, the way to deal with the heat is NOT to watch the local news, and totally ignore what the thermometer says, and especially to ignore what any of the weather forecasts say (I don't even watch 'em any more in the hottest part of the summer, 'cept to check weather.com and see if it's gonna rain or not). I have always thought that once it gets up over 90 degrees, it just doesn't matter how hot it is, cuz it's just "hot". AND, knowing the numerical temperature (and heat index value) only makes it seem hotter than it would if you just thought "yeah, it's pretty damn hot", without obsessing about the details. Seriously.

Welcome home, FFA!!!! Since you been gone, I got a disc for you that I know you'll like.

What's "HH scene" refer to?? I should probably know, but nothin's ringing a bell. Also, what city are you in, Soul Stream?? -- if you don't mind me asking. I'm not a musician, but from what I gather in talking with a few others, I think there's a bit of a similar thing going on here in Kansas City. The clubs I go to on non-Friday or non-Saturday nights are often fairly dead (at least for the first hour or two), and the number of quality clubs that are open in Kansas City has gone down in the last 4 or 5 years. Free-For-All -- what's your take on this?? You're closer to the scene here in KC than I am.

Oh wait, I just reread the topic, and it's the bluesiest JAZZ piano player... ( So never mind about my "Johnny Johnson" suggestion. )
-
I'm pretty sure I haven't ever heard anything with Grassella Oliphant, but that name seemed vaguely familiar, so off to the AMG I went... And low and behold I remembered hearing about this gem on the old BNBB. I've never heard it before, but based on the line-up, it's gotta be a totally baaad-ass date if ever there was one... Anybody here ever heard this?? Ever been out on CD yet??
-
Although I'm certainly no expert on this subject, wouldn't it have to be someone more like Johnnie Johnson??? Not saying he's necessarily the right answer, but based on my knowledge of music history (and not so much my ears, and what they've heard - or more specifically, what they haven't heard), Johnson was the first name to pop into my head. Who else am I forgetting??

Harry Whitaker's BLACK RENNAISANCE Well, I listened to this again twice today (so I been through it three times now, total). Damn, what an amazing album. Really DEEP in the very best "Sun Ra meets Music Inc., meets Funkadelic" sense of the word. And what powerful solos from Woody. I'm sure I've never heard him play in anything even close to this kind of context. And I'm pretty sure I've never heard any trumpeter anywhere near this caliber - play in any context even remotely similar. Not for the faint of heart, but if anyone has open ears, and an open mind for jazz in the 70's, then they NEED to get this disc sometime. FYI, here's the description from Dusty Groove:

I got the TA gig this semester for jazz history!

Would love to see your syllabus when it gets formalized (or even at the draft stage). I have long wondered how I would teach such a class. What I would include, what I wouldn't, etc... I'm sure we might have some tiny suggestions here and there (about the syllabus), which of course you can use or ignore as you see fit. (Also, edited my post above to include a suggestion of a touch of electric Miles.) -
Pretty Pathetic, Considering Its From Blue Note

Whew!!!!! -
I pretty much agree with what Chuck just said. The sound quality on the box-set is quite good, and I've never had any reason to complain about it. And more importantly, I've never heard a CD release of this material that was nearly as bad as many of the late 80's BN releases. Get the box set, is still my advice.

Dmitry's refering to the fact that just a couple weeks ago I traded him an extra copy of "Art Deco" on CD, that I had found used in Columbia MO, for only $6. But I've seen it go for maybe up to $15 on eBay before, but I've seen it go for less too. A great album (IMHO), and $10 (postage included) seemed like a pretty reasonable price to me. -

Be sure to include some M-Base stuff in there. I think it's an important movement that deserves at least a mention (and one musical example). Also, if there's time, I might include a little electric Ornette too (including one musical example), either from the 70's or 80's. I think it's important for people to understand that Harmolodic music didn't end with Ornette's Atlantic sides in the early 60's. Also, it (electric Harmolodic music) directly influenced M-Base. I'm also assuming that you'll include at least a touch of electric Miles too. I'm sure you would, but it never hurts to be sure. -
Check out: http://darkfunk.com Link: Specific page with links to the whole show The 5th track is a cooler-than-shit version of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" on b3 and drums, by a group billed as the "russo benevento duo"... link: Paranoid Android (mp3, about 7 minutes long) Check it out!!! A few other cool covers to be found among all 36 tracks. Nearly the whole show is b3-oriented, with Medeski and a bunch of other cool cats. I've always thought Woody's solo on the first cut (on side 1) is pretty happenin'. Nothing to search the world over, but at least he makes the track worth something.

Save up for the box set, would be my advice. You're gonna want all of it. Looks like there's one right now at half.com for $70.00 plus $2.50 in postage. And the last one that sold on eBay went for $55.50 plus $5.00 postage.
