  1. Oh man, "Root Down" is at least 3.5 stars in my book, or more like 4. Not a perfect album, by any means - but one of Smith's more interesting albums out of anything he did in the late 60's or the entire 70's. Good catch, Conn500.
  2. re: the previous post. What the hell album is this?? I looked up Duke Pearson on the AMG, and couldn't find this listed. Granted, I'm not up on every Pearson album ever released, but I figured I'd at least vaguely know what it was from the title and/or the cover. Images from the auction... edit: Looks like it's just a retitled issue of this: Dedication! (1961 Prestige / OJC CD release in 2000)
  3. Welcome!!!!
  4. I've never seen Jazz Review over here in the states. How much is a subscription for someone over here in the U.S.?? Probably pretty expensive, I'm guessing.
  5. Heat without humitity??? Never heard of such of thing. Nearly always 80% or 90% humidity here, and the same in St. Louis where I grew up. You can walk out the door of an air-conditioned house, and be sweating up a storm before you even get to your car. And I mean "gotta mop my brow fast, before the shit runs into my eyes" kinda sweat.

  7. Might have just been snow. Not a blizzard, mind you. But snow, right behind 100-degree temps.
  8. Another thing. Here in Kansas City, we've just had the driest July on record, with only like 2/10th of an inch of rain the whole month, and the rest of this summer has been very, very dry as well. My folks live in St. Louis (barely 250 miles east of here), and they've had somewhat greater than average rainfall this summer. (My Mom said she can barely keep up with the weed-pullin' in her flower-gardens, cuz of all the rain.) And then, as hot as it's been here in the Midwest, come to find out from my wife's aunt, that Minnesota has had somewhat cooler-than-average temps all summer. WTF???
  9. The company I used to work for had a factory down in San Marcos TX, about halfway between Austin and San Antonio. A few years back, I seem to remember that it was over 100 degrees one week, and then only like two weeks later they had a snow-storm, or maybe an ice-storm. Seriously!!! It was at least within the same 30 days, I know that - and it was like nearly record-breaking heat, followed by a freak-of-nature 'winter' thing. (Or the other way around - can't remember if this was in the Fall or Spring.) Any of you Texans remember that?? I think it might have been like 4 years ago, maybe 5.
  10. Thanks couw!!! I never did notice that little symbol on their site before now. Youch, they want $8.50 in shipping for one disc, $12.50 for two, and $16.00 for three or four discs (I've converted the Euro values of 7.50, 11.00, 14.00). That means shipping costs of between $4 and $8.50, per disc. At this point, I think I'm only looking to get Phil's disc, and probably Jeremy Pelt's too, so maybe I'll hold off until I have a bigger order, and/or see if anybody else I know in Kansas City is interested in going in on an order together - to save on shipping.
  11. I'm a U.S. guy, and I've been "this close" to buying from Freshsounds directly, on-line -- but I'm a little shy about buying from an overseas on-line resource, or at least one that I've never dealt with before. Anybody from the U.S. bought from Freshsounds before?? What are their shipping rates like?? Can you pay with a credit card?? Do they automatically convert from Euros to Dollars, and is the transaction fairly seamless without any nasty conversion charges?? Did they package stuff up appropriately for being sent across the pond?? How long did it take to get to you - only a week or two?? - or more like a month or more?? Frankly I've had several items "in my basket" on their site, probably three, four, maybe five times -- but they don't even tell you a single word about shipping rates or currency issues, without you first creating an account with them. So I keep saying "why bother", and I'll just keep trying to find those Freshsound discs somewhere else. Am I just being a chickenshit, or what?? Phil, I'd already have your CD by now, probably two or three months ago, if Freshsound had a slightly more user-friendly website, or at least a good customer FAQ. Or is there another good U.S. source for Freshsound titles?? (Sorry for the tone of this post - I've been battling my phone company this morning over billing problems on their end, so I'm kind of in the mood to bitch right now, if you know what I mean.)

  13. Had no idea. It's not that I specifically don't like Van Morison - it's just that (for whatever reason), I've just never heard any that moved me to go want to hear more. Then again, I've pretty much only heard what I've heard on the radio - which is practically never - since none of the radio I ever listen to, ever plays Van Morison. I think there's a good chance I've never heard any of "Astral Weeks" before, so that's probably a hole I need to plug one of these days. Thanks!!
  14. Full disclosure before I say something that I know some people won't like... I've only ever owned one Van Morison album or CD in my entire life -- 1990's "Enlightenment", which I got as a free promo CD back when I worked at a top-40 radio-station, back while I was in college. I've owned a small handful of Wynton CD's over the years, most notably his Columbia debut from 1981 (simply called "Wynton Marsalis"), and also "Black Codes" and "J Mood" -- all three of which I still own. The rest (perhaps as many as 4 more titles) I’ve traded off – most of them promos I got here and there, or gifts from relatives who really didn’t know my specific jazz tastes. I only mention all that, so I can go on record as having owned more Wynton albums than Van Morison albums, before I say this: In theory anyway (since I haven't heard either release), I have less of a problem with the concept of Van Morison releasing an album on Blue Note, than I do Wynton Marsalis. Anybody else with me on this?? Sangry at least??
  15. from: Dear Prudence | Advice on manners and morals (Posted Thursday, August 7, 2003, at 8:20 AM PT) Dear Pru, My husband and I have been married for eight years and have a young family. He is a wonderful husband and father. We both have stressful jobs, but he is very active in helping to raise our two children (3 and 1). I am seven months pregnant, which doesn't leave "us" a lot of free time. So in the last year or so, our sexual relationship has been OK, but not what it once was. We are a religious family, which means we abstain from pornography and even R-rated movies. We also believe that "self-gratification" is a no-no. My husband has always had a fairly strong appetite (time permitting, two or three times a day wouldn't be too much for him). As you can imagine, three babies in four years has definitely taken a toll on my time and energy so that keeping up with him is not as easy as it once was. I thought I was still fairly active, but I think that my husband's thirst isn't being quenched. I have not exactly caught him red-handed, but I woke up one night to find him fondling himself. He's also spending a lot more time in the bathroom with the door locked. I'm trying to rationalize it, calling his needs natural, realizing that he has a stressful job and maybe it's a good tension reliever for him. The bottom line, though, is that I feel he is being hypocritical about the morals we believe in (i.e., we all need to control our appetites to make us better people). I also feel he is cheating on our marriage, just as if he was with another woman. I love him so much that I want his needs to be satisfied, but I want to be the one to satisfy them. What do I do? —Jealous Wife ============================================================ Her: What are you doing up so late on the computer???? Him: Oh, just checking on the latest news, honey.
  16. I'll second that!!!
  17. Still looking to trade for "Africaine", if anybody's got an extra one.
  18. OK, direct from the artist himself, I'm ordering one for me, one for "Free For All" (although he doesn't know it yet), and one for "Eric" - which will cover all the Kansas City folks. Can't wait - sounds like a great disc!! B)
  19. Being from Kansas City, I remember this incident all too well. They should have at least given that guy 3 months of actual jail-time (which isn't very much, actually -- but at least give him some actual jail time), and definitely ban him from going to any professional sports games (of any sort, not just baseball) for 3 years. I'm not going to say they should have put him away for life, but that judge should have sent a message to all fans that this sort of behavior has real consequences. Disgusting turn of events, if you ask me. (Relatively speaking - keeping it in perspective with all that's going on in the world.)
  20. I'm pretty new to jazz too (only since about 1991), but a few names off the top of my head... Sun Ra (in Chicago, after his stroke - but he still played well, considering). June Tyson and John Gilmore were still with us then too. I've also seen the Sun Ra Archestra under Marshal Allan's leadership, 3 times I think. Joe Henderson (twice! - once in a pianoless trio with Al Foster and George Mraz, and the other was in a quintet with piano and trombone - I forget who was in the band.) Bobby Hutcherson - and he had a 4-octave marimba with him too (on loan from the local music conservatory), which he normally doesn't have with him on tour. Sonny Rollins Jackie McLean Bobby Watson (lots, since he moved to Kansas City) Andrew Hill Terrance Blanchard - one of the first jazz shows I ever saw, back around '91. Wallace Roney (twice) Dave Holland Quintet (twice) Don Byron Brad Mehldau Herbie and Wayne!!!! - met both of them after the show too - nicest guys ever Greg Osby and Jason Moran - 4 or 5 times by now (once with Stephon Harris and Mark Shim too) MMW - 3 or 4 times, including one of their all-acoustic shows. Damn, memory is fading. I'll remember more later I'm sure...
  21. They must be headquartered on a planet which defines the word 'AVAILABLE' in a way which differs from that of us Earthlings. Hello!!!! "Available" means stuff they currently have in inventory. If they're out of stock on something, then it's not included in the sale. They had some Andrew Hill titles "available" at one time, and now they're "out of stock".
  22. Oh, I see. This isn't just a one-time deal, with everyone submitting one track each. But we're talking about one person picking all the tunes for a CDR, and then a week - or a month later (or whenever) - the next person does the same thing. So we're talkin' a dozen or more CDR's. Wow - that's alot of music to try to guess what it is!!! ( Like I said - I only skimmed the thread. ) Still, count me in!!! - Sounds like fun!!!
  23. what on EARTH took you so long to find your way to this thread? I skimmed this thead once, probably after about the 4th or 5th post, and then I kinda forgot about it. Then today, I realized it had grown in size by quite a bit, and I didn't want to be left out!!! I'm pretty bad about guessing who's who on blindfold tests, but who knows - maybe I'll surprise myself and actually figure a couple of the cuts out. If I get anywhere even close to being right on a few, I'd be happy. (Like mistaking later Lee Morgan for early Woody Shaw -- that'd be 'close enough' in my book. ) And actually, it's been years since I've tried to guess anything (there's not much jazz on the radio here, so the only jazz I ever listen to is what I pick out myself), so perhaps my ears are better than I'm giving myself credit for. We'll see!!!!!
  24. Count me in too, and I've got a burner. I'm only just now skimming the thread (which I hadn't really been following). Am I right in surmising that I would need to contribute one track of my own choosing to the "Blind Fold Test" compilation?? -- regardless of how it is distributed?? However it turns out, count me in too!!! PS: I suppose we can contribute anything we like to the quiz, but is there any preference to submitting obscure music by relatively well-known artists?? - or music from obscure artists (which would be at least somewhat obscure, by definition). In other words - is the goal to make it possible to people to actually guess who's playing on each cut?? And by "relatively well-known" I mean the kinds of names we see on this board, day-in and day-out. I realize that names like Booker Ervin, Curtis Amy, and Charles Tolliver aren't at all "well-known" in the normal sense - but most of us here know at least some work by each of these kind of artists. And by "obscure", I mean cats who literally only recorded a hand-full of times in their whole life. ( Funny how somebody like Tina Brooks is both "really obscure" in one sense, and "pretty well known" in another sense - at least in circles like ours!!! ) And I realize that everyone's gonna submit what they want to submit, to hell with any "recommendations" or "guidelines" -- but I thought it might be good to discuss, for those of use who are on the fence about how to pick stuff to submit.
