AUTHENTIC MIND WARPER WARP GENERATOR and MIND WARPER GEN 4 DIMENSIONAL WARP GENERATOR
-
Had no idea. It's not that I specifically don't like Van Morison - it's just that (for whatever reason), I've just never heard any that moved me to go want to hear more. Then again, I've pretty much only heard what I've heard on the radio - which is practically never - since none of the radio I ever listen to, ever plays Van Morison. I think there's a good chance I've never heard any of "Astral Weeks" before, so that's probably a hole I need to plug one of these days. Thanks!!
-
Full disclosure before I say something that I know some people won't like... I've only ever owned one Van Morison album or CD in my entire life -- 1990's "Enlightenment", which I got as a free promo CD back when I worked at a top-40 radio-station, back while I was in college. I've owned a small handful of Wynton CD's over the years, most notably his Columbia debut from 1981 (simply called "Wynton Marsalis"), and also "Black Codes" and "J Mood" -- all three of which I still own. The rest (perhaps as many as 4 more titles) I’ve traded off – most of them promos I got here and there, or gifts from relatives who really didn’t know my specific jazz tastes. I only mention all that, so I can go on record as having owned more Wynton albums than Van Morison albums, before I say this: In theory anyway (since I haven't heard either release), I have less of a problem with the concept of Van Morison releasing an album on Blue Note, than I do Wynton Marsalis. Anybody else with me on this?? Sangry at least??

from: Dear Prudence | Advice on manners and morals (Posted Thursday, August 7, 2003, at 8:20 AM PT) Dear Pru, My husband and I have been married for eight years and have a young family. He is a wonderful husband and father. We both have stressful jobs, but he is very active in helping to raise our two children (3 and 1). I am seven months pregnant, which doesn't leave "us" a lot of free time. So in the last year or so, our sexual relationship has been OK, but not what it once was. We are a religious family, which means we abstain from pornography and even R-rated movies. We also believe that "self-gratification" is a no-no. My husband has always had a fairly strong appetite (time permitting, two or three times a day wouldn't be too much for him). As you can imagine, three babies in four years has definitely taken a toll on my time and energy so that keeping up with him is not as easy as it once was. I thought I was still fairly active, but I think that my husband's thirst isn't being quenched. I have not exactly caught him red-handed, but I woke up one night to find him fondling himself. He's also spending a lot more time in the bathroom with the door locked. I'm trying to rationalize it, calling his needs natural, realizing that he has a stressful job and maybe it's a good tension reliever for him. The bottom line, though, is that I feel he is being hypocritical about the morals we believe in (i.e., we all need to control our appetites to make us better people). I also feel he is cheating on our marriage, just as if he was with another woman. I love him so much that I want his needs to be satisfied, but I want to be the one to satisfy them. What do I do? —Jealous Wife ============================================================ Her: What are you doing up so late on the computer???? Him: Oh, just checking on the latest news, honey. -
I'll second that!!!

Still looking to trade for "Africaine", if anybody's got an extra one. -
great disc just discovered, with Jason Moran
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
OK, direct from the artist himself, I'm ordering one for me, one for "Free For All" (although he doesn't know it yet), and one for "Eric" - which will cover all the Kansas City folks. Can't wait - sounds like a great disc!! B) -

Being from Kansas City, I remember this incident all too well. They should have at least given that guy 3 months of actual jail-time (which isn't very much, actually -- but at least give him some actual jail time), and definitely ban him from going to any professional sports games (of any sort, not just baseball) for 3 years. I'm not going to say they should have put him away for life, but that judge should have sent a message to all fans that this sort of behavior has real consequences. Disgusting turn of events, if you ask me. (Relatively speaking - keeping it in perspective with all that's going on in the world.) -
I'm pretty new to jazz too (only since about 1991), but a few names off the top of my head... Sun Ra (in Chicago, after his stroke - but he still played well, considering). June Tyson and John Gilmore were still with us then too. I've also seen the Sun Ra Archestra under Marshal Allan's leadership, 3 times I think. Joe Henderson (twice! - once in a pianoless trio with Al Foster and George Mraz, and the other was in a quintet with piano and trombone - I forget who was in the band.) Bobby Hutcherson - and he had a 4-octave marimba with him too (on loan from the local music conservatory), which he normally doesn't have with him on tour. Sonny Rollins Jackie McLean Bobby Watson (lots, since he moved to Kansas City) Andrew Hill Terrance Blanchard - one of the first jazz shows I ever saw, back around '91. Wallace Roney (twice) Dave Holland Quintet (twice) Don Byron Brad Mehldau Herbie and Wayne!!!! - met both of them after the show too - nicest guys ever Greg Osby and Jason Moran - 4 or 5 times by now (once with Stephon Harris and Mark Shim too) MMW - 3 or 4 times, including one of their all-acoustic shows. Damn, memory is fading. I'll remember more later I'm sure...

They must be headquartered on a planet which defines the word 'AVAILABLE' in a way which differs from that of us Earthlings. Hello!!!! "Available" means stuff they currently have in inventory. If they're out of stock on something, then it's not included in the sale. They had some Andrew Hill titles "available" at one time, and now they're "out of stock".

Oh, I see. This isn't just a one-time deal, with everyone submitting one track each. But we're talking about one person picking all the tunes for a CDR, and then a week - or a month later (or whenever) - the next person does the same thing. So we're talkin' a dozen or more CDR's. Wow - that's alot of music to try to guess what it is!!! ( Like I said - I only skimmed the thread. ) Still, count me in!!! - Sounds like fun!!!
-
what on EARTH took you so long to find your way to this thread? I skimmed this thead once, probably after about the 4th or 5th post, and then I kinda forgot about it. Then today, I realized it had grown in size by quite a bit, and I didn't want to be left out!!! I'm pretty bad about guessing who's who on blindfold tests, but who knows - maybe I'll surprise myself and actually figure a couple of the cuts out. If I get anywhere even close to being right on a few, I'd be happy. (Like mistaking later Lee Morgan for early Woody Shaw -- that'd be 'close enough' in my book. ) And actually, it's been years since I've tried to guess anything (there's not much jazz on the radio here, so the only jazz I ever listen to is what I pick out myself), so perhaps my ears are better than I'm giving myself credit for. We'll see!!!!!
-
Count me in too, and I've got a burner. I'm only just now skimming the thread (which I hadn't really been following). Am I right in surmising that I would need to contribute one track of my own choosing to the "Blind Fold Test" compilation?? -- regardless of how it is distributed?? However it turns out, count me in too!!! PS: I suppose we can contribute anything we like to the quiz, but is there any preference to submitting obscure music by relatively well-known artists?? - or music from obscure artists (which would be at least somewhat obscure, by definition). In other words - is the goal to make it possible to people to actually guess who's playing on each cut?? And by "relatively well-known" I mean the kinds of names we see on this board, day-in and day-out. I realize that names like Booker Ervin, Curtis Amy, and Charles Tolliver aren't at all "well-known" in the normal sense - but most of us here know at least some work by each of these kind of artists. And by "obscure", I mean cats who literally only recorded a hand-full of times in their whole life. ( Funny how somebody like Tina Brooks is both "really obscure" in one sense, and "pretty well known" in another sense - at least in circles like ours!!! ) And I realize that everyone's gonna submit what they want to submit, to hell with any "recommendations" or "guidelines" -- but I thought it might be good to discuss, for those of use who are on the fence about how to pick stuff to submit.

Perhaps he didn't want to 'drop' the same names multiple times, and prefered to use the Osby quote - which would be understandable. -
Yeah, I plan to order 6!! (cuz 6 is what'll get me free shipping from CDBaby), and I'll place the order within the next 7-10 days, or at least definitely sometime in August. Hey, you ought to start up a new thread specifically pushing people to order their Organissimo CD's during the month of August, if they were already thinking about it anyway. Let's get everyone who hasn't ordered yet to do so in August, to get you up there on the CDBaby sales chart, and on that promo comp-CD. And, maybe a carefully worded sales pitch on AAJ, maybe from somebody here who also posts there quite a bit, might also be in order. The key is to get somebody who's already relatively well respected on the AAJ board, to post the pitch - rather than an infrequent poster (like any of the guys in the band, or Use3D). That would reduce the perception of the pitch as "just being spam". Having a thread title like "shameless promotion alert", or something self-deprecating, always seems to help those things get noticed in a "less bad' sort of way. Who here is a frequent poster on AAJ?? I post there some (sometimes less, sometimes more), but I think there are others here who also post there more than I do. Just some ideas...

Hands down, my favorite Grant Green album is "Solid". But there are many Green albums that are nearly as good - probably at least 1/4th of his entire BN catalog.

Tenor player w/ biggest influence on players today
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Another young 'Hendersonian' tenor player: Aaron Stewart, who's on that Brett Sroka disc I'm pluggin' in another thread (the one with Jason Moran as a sideman). From the one full-length sample I've heard (from Sroka's disc), Stewart sure sounds like he's in the 'Henderson' camp to me - and he can't be over 30 is my guess. -

Joe Henderson!!! -
Check this out: "Happy-Go-Lucky-Ism" (6:20 - mp3 of the whole tune) Then this: "A Sound Caresses the Breast of the Negres" (mp3 - sample only) Then read some of this (by the way, I added all the bolding, sizing, and colors myself - but the text I lifted from his website)... Then get on it!!! Here's the guy's website: http://www.brettsroka.com PS: The tenor player on this disc, Aaron Stewart, is also on Andrew Hill's most recent big-band release "A Beautiful Day".

Tenor player w/ biggest influence on players today
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Thought of another young tenor player who sounds like a Hendersonian to me: Jimmy Greene, who isn't yet 30 (having been born in 1975). Actually, it wasn't so much that I thought of Greene, but rather I put on a recent Ralph Peterson quintet CD ('Subliminal Seduction', on Criss Cross), and thought "damn, there's another guy who's been listening to Joe Henderson" - and had to look to see who it was. -
Who woulda thunk there's be such a clear picture of Lee with the bandage on his head, in one of the new RVG's!!!!! Man, the plot thickens!!! B) I don't suppose Michael would have any idea, by any chance?? If so - Kevin - could you mention some of this to him next time you trade e-mails with him, or talk to him by phone??

While I agree that Coltrane has been a HUGE influence on guys all through the 70's and 80's, I'm really looking for who is the biggest influence NOW, and over the last 10 or 15 years or so. All the guys you mention, Conn500, are all well over 40, and half of them are over 50. (I don't know how old Salim Washington is, afraid I'm not familiar with him.) But I looked up all the rest on AMG, and they're all older (or even "much older") than what I'm looking for. The cats who are 30 and under, or 35 and under --- those are the guys who I'm most currious about who their biggest influences are. I can only think of so many names, but Chris Potter turned 32 this year. There's Mark Shim, he's young enough. (Ravi Coltrane is creepin' on 40, so maybe he's outside of my range.) Joshua Redman is under 35. I'm not saying Coltrane isn't an influence still, but I think his influence is reduced somewhat from when it was THE dominant voice that everybody seemed to be reaching for in the 70's, and even the 80's. I voted for Joe Henderson. I hear him in Shim, Ravi, and even some in Potter (though less than the other two). I wish I could think of some other tenor players under the age of 35. There have to be some I'm totally forgetting. Oh, Mark Turner - he's another one who's got to be under 35, who I also hear some 'Joe' in, though I hear 'Wayne' in him too I think.
