  1. I was just thinking about Grant Green's "Solid" - with Joe Henderson & James Spaulding, and that got me thinking about other great alto/tenor combos (without trumpet, nor sacbut), but with just one tenor and one alto as the only horns, backed by whatever else - piano trio, maybe vibes, maybe just drums & bass. One other that sprung to mind was an excellent album by Gary Thomas (tenor) with Greg Osby, called "Pariah's Pariah" I'm sure there are hundreds of others, and a couple dozen I'm forgetting. What other great tenor/alto albums are really outstanding???
  2. If that's the case, what could ever justify releasing the Candido????
  3. Wallace Roney
  4. Well, Bruce, did they have it??? I'm on spin #4 in less than 24 hours. The 3-part horn arrangements are really sweet.
  5. I'm not the seller, and all the usual disclaimers apply. This one has been OOP for some time, released on CD in 1995. http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid...75&meta_id=null
  6. I should have also said that there really hasn't ever been any kind of decent release of any of this material (prior to the Conn release in 2002). Overlapping releases, on many labels - and nearly a dozen reissues on other labels (most gray-market), with even a more confusing collection of some of these tunes. Mislabeled, crappy sound, everything you could ever fear... I had very low expectations for this release ("IS") when I first heard about it coming out as a 2CD Conn. How I ever took the plunge, I really don't know - and can't really remember either. I may have sampled it in the store, is my only guess. I sure wouldn't have bought it without giving it a spin first. That said - it turned out (for me) to be the very best of all the Conns released in 2002. (I already had the McLean Mosaic.)
  7. The Corea "IS" 2-CD set is the only way to go for this material. Both in terms of Sound Quality (which basically sucks on nearly all the previous issues), as well as completeness of the material. Here's the track listing... ===================================== 1. It (Corea) - 0:30 2. The Brain (Corea) - 10:10 3. This (Corea) - 8:18 4. Song of the Wind (Corea) - 8:05 5. Sundance (Corea) - 10:02 6. The Brain [alternate take] (Corea) - 7:26 7. This [alternate take] (Corea) - 11:49 ===================================== 1. Song of the Wind [alternate take] (Corea) - 6:46 2. Sundance (Corea) - 12:28 3. Jamala (Holland) - 14:07 4. Converge (Corea) - 7:59 5. Is (Corea) - 28:54 6. Jamala [alternate take] (Corea) - 8:57 7. Converge [alternate take] (Corea) - 7:59 ===================================== The alternate takes are particularly significant (on disc #1, in particular), because (if I remember right), most of them feature Chick on electric (Fender Rhodes, I think) on one version of each tune, and then on accoustic piano on the other version. Maybe not every pair of alternates, but I think this is true on several of them. I used to have one of the many gray-market CD issues of some of this material (I think it was called "The Brain"), and it was a mish-mash of about 30-40% of the material, at most. That said, anybody with one or more of the incomplete prior issues are certainly encouraged to participate - if I should happen to pick the Corea "IS" discs, which I am (kinda) leaning towards, maybe... (At least at this moment.)
  8. I'm on my third spin of this disc since I bought it 7 hours ago. IMHO, it's almost as exciting (at least to me), as ANYTHING else recorded in 1963, and that should be saying a lot, considering all the Andrew Hill albums from 1963, and the piano-less albums Jackie McLean did in '63. I don't have my BN discography handy, but there was a lot of heavy shit happening in 1963, and "Conflict" is right up there with the best of it. All you other progressive-minded people NEED this album, trust me. It's not all that 'out', not at all. Just very adventuresome, within it's own context.
  9. Thanks Vibes. Even though the Chick hasn't gotten a lot of votes, it sounds like quite a few people here have it (everyone who's responded to this thread, except Big Al). So, at this point I'm slightly leaning towards the Corea "IS" discs, but I haven't decided completely yet. I'll decide soon, probably within the next 24-to-48 hours. ( I figure if there's that much interest in the McLean (and there clearly is!!), then someone else will pick it for their Album o' the Week. ) ( If Tolliver were on the whole McLean album (and not just half), I'd be more inclined to pick it. And I agree that it's one of Jackie's finest recordings. All three of the McLean dates with Tolliver are outstanding, IMHO. Absolutely some of the very best work in Jackie's entire catalog. )
  10. The only "mini-LP" I've bought, so far, is Andrew Hill's "Hommage" - which I got cuz I love all of Hill's solo-piano work. I've been this close to buying a couple others ("Conflict" in particular"), but every time I think to myself... ...overpriced... ...no bonus tracks... ...not at all my prefered packaging format... Awfully damn glad I held out for the U.S. one, especially in this case. Shit - $25, $30, or even some places want $40 for this title from Japan. And at only 37 minutes (without the bonus tracks) that comes out to almost $1 per minute, or at least a lot closer than I ever want to get.
  11. Chuck, I too thought the sound on the CD was a tiny bit lacking, almost as if there were a couple boom-mikes in the room, and things were not individually miked. I know, I know, close-miking probably wasn't done all that much in the early 60's (or maybe it was?? - I really don't know). I guess I mean to say that I noticed the "roominess" of the sound was a bit more than usual. But the music on "Conflict" is glorious!!! And I the sound is still very good, if not quite "breathtaking".
  12. Actually, Rosenthal's HARD BOP is where I first heard about it too. And I've been salivating for it all this time, just like you!! If they had released it in a jewel box in Japan, I probably would have gotten it by now - but I'm sure glad I waited, and got an extra 20 minutes of music for at least half the price of the import!!
  13. FYI, here are some 30-second sound-samples of the Japanese issue of "Conflict".... Link: Amazon In case you're like me, and have never heard this album before...
  14. Just listened the to master take of "Look To Your Heart" for the second time, and the alternate is way better (IMHO). There are a few squawks on the alternate, which make it easy to understand why they chose the take they did. But, the alternate is much stronger (IMHO), particularly on Wood's alto solo at the beginning. Much more adventuresome, with more energy (as I recall, after only hearing the alternate the first time). I'm on my second time throught the album (back to back!!), and I may listen to the whole thing again, twice more yet today!!!
  15. Great idea!!! I think it would be good to know what's coming up, at least a few weeks ahead of time.
  16. In a heartbeat!!! Actually, even though the "Album of the Week" falls to me next - I think I'm gonna wait on picking "Conflict" as the album of the week. Am I right in thinking that most people won't have this one??? - (since it's never been on CD in the U.S. before now). Might be tough to get enough people to go out and get it, now, on such short notice. But, I whole-heartedly suggest we come back to this one as an "Album of the Week" in a few months, after people have had some time to get it. Official Notice: if you're thinking about getting Jimmy Woods "Conflict" on CD anytime in the future, go ahead and get it "sooner than later" - cuz I predict it's gonna be an "Album of the Week" within the next 2-3 months.
  17. Yeah, how can you tell the total number of posts for the whole board????
  18. Damn, Woods' alto solo on the alternate take of "Look To Your Heart" (track 9) - is really stunning. This is only my first time (ever!) through this album, so I can't say that I specifically noticed Woods' solo on the master take. Maybe it was just as good. Man, I'm so glad they had alternate takes, and that they're on this new issue.
  19. Looks like I must not have been the only one who didn't know this was coming out in the U.S. --- as here's a couple recent eBay auctions for the Japanese "Conflict" CD (minus the bonus tracks, presumably), which both went for relatively high-dollars... $24.45 ($27.45 with shipping) $18.52 ($21.52 with shipping) I just got mine for $12, plus tax (with a little "insiders" employee discount, 20% off most titles --- if I can find the right sales-person to ring me up, flash 'em an old card that's really only supposed to get me 10% off new 'classical' titles, but somehow I've got a few people in there conviced it's worth 15% or 20% off anything in the store, depending on who I find, and what mood they're in.) B) B) B) Oh, and of course the domestic one is in a Jewel Box. :rsmile:
  20. I had no idea this was coming out in the U.S., until I stumbled across it today!!! (While I was out looking for the new Rare Grooves, which they didn't have.) It appears to have just hit the streets today, April 22nd. Man, I've been jones'n for this one for a couple years now!!!! I never did pull the trigger on the Japanese CD issue, cuz I hate "mini-LP's", and I'm sure glad I didn't, cuz the new domestic (U.S.) "Conflict" has three bonus tracks, that I'm sure weren't on the Japanese CD issue. (Can someone confirm this???) ( There are alternate takes of these three tunes: "Conflict", "Aim", and "Look To Your Heart". FYI, the total time on the disc is about 57 minutes.) Before 20 minutes ago, I'd never heard this album (nor any Jimmy Woods album, for that matter). I was particularly interested in this one, cuz it has Andrew Hill!!!! - but I didn't remember until today that it also has Carnell Jones and Harold Land, plus (of course) Elvin Jones. What a line-up!!! As I'm typing this, I'm only through the first three tunes and about a minute into the fourth track - but I'm loving it, for sure!!!! This is a VERY interesting album, especially for something recorded in 1963. Hot damn!!!! One other question, about Woods' other album from 1962: Is "Awakening" just as good/interesting??????"
  21. Just stopped by my favorite shiny-disc-emporium, and they didn't get any of the rare grooves in today. They did have the new Dexter Gordon BN compilation (2 discs), so I think they either they screwed up and didn't order any (by mistake), or else they didn't intend to order any. (The only one I was gonna get was the Patton disc - I'm sure I'll pass on the others.) BUT, I found one other new release that I didn't even know was coming out domestically. So excited about it, I'm gonna start a brand new thread about it!!! :D (Hint - check out my new Avatar!!! B) B) B) )
  22. Well, shit, we did "Live at the Lighthouse" - and that sure wasn't a mid-line price title!! I think single-disc Conns are definitely NOT too expensive to pick. ( Corea's "IS" sessions is a double-disc Conn, which ain' t cheap. ) Anything up to $16 seems reasonable to me....
  23. Also, be sure to add comments to this thread about which of these titles you'd be interested in doing, since you can only vote for one title in the Poll. AAJ has polls with more than 10 items, and polls where you can vote for multiple items in the same poll. Wonder if you can do that here too?? (I mean I know you can't now, but I wonder if the software has settings to allow this.)
