I'm sure you must mean "Blackjack". (I think I've jumbled those two titles a time or two myself.)

Please answer the poll, and say why you chose what you did, and if you have any strong liking for any of the other titles. Also, as a side note - I'm particularly interested in hearing about these 5 dates (below), which I'm not at all familiar with... Charles Earland: "Intensity" Bobbi Humphrey: "Flute In" Harold Mabern: "Greasy Kid Stuff" Lonnie Smith: "Turning Point" Jack Wilson: "Easterly Winds" As a question separate from the poll, which of these five dates are "must have" recordings, for fans of Lee Morgan's later work??? Which one(s) should I buy first?? Thanks!!! PS: Here's a link (below) to what is probably a pretty darn complete Lee Morgan discography/sessionography, with sidemen and all the particulars for each of these albums, listed in the poll above... Not sure if these qualify, strictly speaking, but two "slow" Coltrane tunes that get me every time are... Naima (of course), and the slow intro/outro to "Alabama" - the latter almost being like a prayer.

Jury duty sucks ass...
Rooster_Ties replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'd be curious to hear the reason(s) why jury duty was so stressful for you, Chris. I don't ask to make any kind of judgement about your reasons - they're your reasons, and I won't second-guess them one bit. I'm just wondering if there was something specific about your experiences that I hadn't ever thought of in conjunction with serving on a jury. Genuine interest is my only reason for asking. ("No comment" is a perfectly valid answer, however, if you'd rather not go into it.) -

( Maybe I should clarify that "Joel and the cats" was just a found image, when I keyed "Birthday" into the Google Image search engine. That ain't me in the picture.... ) -
Album of the Week - what do people already have???
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
I agree completely. That's why I really wanted to pick it, but it didn't sound like very many people owned it yet. But it'll still be very high on my list of choices for the next time I get to pick the "Album of the Week" (if I'm ever so lucky). -
Seattle/Portland suggestions
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks to all for the suggestions!!! Thanks also, Johnny, for mentioning the Indian restaurant. I completely forgot that Indian is one of our newest "ethnic food" interests. We only just had Indian food for the first time, on our Honeymoon, about 2 years ago - in London and Glasgow. Supposedly Glasgow, Scottland is "The Curry Capital of Europe" Who'da thunk that!!! Thanks again for all the great suggestions!!!!!! -

Most interesting/favorite 'Andrew Hill' Blue Note
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I listened to the Morgan/Maupin session from Hill's "LEV" again last night, and I think this is some of the most interesting Lee Morgan playing on record, right up there with Larry Young's "Mother Ship". Man, Lee was so amazing in those 'progressive' contexts. -
Have Mosaic or BN Sales Been Hurt?
Rooster_Ties replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
To each their own, but I think I'm every bit as interested in Blue Note as before. I don't equate the actions of a few, with the music recorded 30+ years ago. And, I can't help but be enthusiastic about Greg Osby, Jason Moran, and maybe a few other artists on BN's current roster. And I certainly don't think Mosaic had/has any influence on the BNBB situation. I haven't been buying cuz money's tight at the moment, but in the next year to two, I fully plan to buy most of the Mosaic Select titles, along with a few other BN Mosaic sets that I haven't picked up yet (Byrd/Adams and Turrentine sets). Yeah, somebody fucked up when it came to the BNBB, but that doesn't affect my opinion of the music. -

My guess is that with all the Ornette on record, that it won't totally die away, never completely. There will be a few students who are captivated by Ornette's music and concepts, who will embrace his language, if only by using all of his recorded output as examples of what the language is. In that respect, I guess I'm glad there's so damn much Ornette on record. He's one who could have easily not taken the world by storm, and it's not too hard to imagine a world with only a handful of Ornette albums, not unlike Jimmy Woods, or Tyrone Washington, or probably plenty of other somewhat visionary jazz players who (for whatever reasons) just didn't get to record as much. Same thing goes with Sun Ra...

Stupid question. What's a BLOG?? Is it an acronym for something?? I only just saw a reference to "BLOG" recently, for the first time, as in something related to some reporter in Iraq. Still didn't quite get what "BLOG" was referring too. Thanks!!

BLACK OAK ARKANSAS LIVE VHS +70'S FOOTAGE
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Holy shit, I just realized that's a washboard he's playing!!! Thank god for walmart.com's extra big CD cover gifs. (I never would have noticed the washboard from the picture at allmusic.com.) AND, while walmart.com sure doesn't have every Blue Note title, much as I'd like to have big ol' gifs of several classic BN titles..... .....it's funny how they sure did have some Black Oak Arkansas. I guess that fits better into Walmart's target demographic, than obscure jazz titles. -

Sometimes I wish Aric were around, just so we could get his feedback on stuff like this. I'm sure it would have been priceless. -
...and then, years later, it finally *CLICKED*!!!
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
I took to Shorter's playing with Miles immediately, since Nefertiti was (luckily) one of the very first Jazz albums I ever owned. ( I think the very first two jazz tapes I ever made were "KoB" with "Nefertiti" on the flip side. And Henderson's "Mode for Joe" with his "Power To The People" on the flip side.) BUT, I was slower to connect with Wayne's own Blue Note albums. I always liked them OK, but only connected with them on a much deeper level several years later. In fact, in some ways I feel like I'm connecting with them even more deeply in the last year or so, for some strange reason. You think you know somebody... -
