So it's just one track that's wrong (and one track only), and not an entire disc?? For instance, it's NOT that the disc labeled "disc 1" actually plays all of "disc 3".

Jazz musicians: One name is all you need...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The great thing about Ornette, is that you can type just "Ornette" into Allmusic (and hit search), and it'll take you directly to his entry. Doesn't even give you a big list of names to choose from that all match somewhat. Ornette really is an original!!! -
Nominations for future "albums of the week"
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
Another idea that would likely spark lots of deep discussion... I just realized tonight that I haven't listened to Ornette's "Free Jazz" (along with "First Take") in ages and ages, probably over two years, maybe even closer to 4 Might make for an interesting "Album of the Week", perhaps??? -

Most interesting/favorite 'Wayne Shorter' BN
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I gave "Etcetera" a spin today, and I listened to "All Seeing Eye" last week at least three times. I gave the nod to "Etcetera", but it was a very close race. You're right Chuck, about Joe Chambers being a monster on the more 'creative' dates. (In fact, I was gonna let that influence my vote, until I remembered that Joe was on both "Etc." and "ASE"!!) I think Joe's almost my favorite Blue Note "House Drummer" from the 60's, with Elvin a close second. -
Most interesting/favorite 'Andrew Hill' Blue Note
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Thanks Chuck, for all that info. As usual, you're a saint... (Except, of course, when you're not ) Hey, which Hill date did you vote for?? (I'm glad to see you're participating in these polls, and a little of your reasoning behind each vote.) Thanks!! -
Most interesting/favorite 'Andrew Hill' Blue Note
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Before yesterday, it had probably been a full year since I heard "Compulsion" - or really any of those later Hill albums from the Mosaic (meaning all the the ones after "PoD".) Yesterday, "Compulsion" smacked me upside the head really damn good!!!! As much as I'd like to have "DwD" on CD, I have to say that I don't find much fault with Andrew wanting "Compulsion" back in the marketplace, since the Mosaic is out of print. Perty please, would someone with the Complete BN Discography handy, remind us all what are all the as-yet unreleased Andrew Hill sessions, who's on them, and when they were recorded?? (My BN-Disco is buried in with a dozens of boxes of books I still haven't unpacked yet.) THANKS!!! With the semi-big-band date from '69 coming out soon (hopefully in October), I'm wondering what's left?? There's the the trio date called "Chain" or "Chained" from about 1968(?). But other than that, there can't be very many others. (Especially since those extra dates came out on "Grass Roots" and "Lift Every Voice".) -
Most interesting/favorite 'Larry Young' album
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I'm surprised that "Of Love and Peace" hasn't gotten a vote or two. It's a very close second for me, behind "Mother Ship" (which is my favorite). Then I rank "Contrasts" a close third. "Heaven on Earth" is OK, nothing really wrong with it - but it doesn't get me all fired up like the other three. -

You also left out "Into somethin'" Nice idea for a poll! Oops, "Somethin' Else" is a Sun Ra album, I meant "Into Somethin'". Good thing I left it out!!! I'll edit my original message up above, to cover my tracks... -
Most interesting/favorite 'Herbie Hancock' BN
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
By the way, I chose "Speak Like A Child" because of it's subtle "Gil Evans"-ish horn writing, plus I love the tonal texture (meaning the sound) of those horns together, which are a unique combination of flugelhorn, bass trombone, and alto flute. Some of Herbie's most sensitive playing, me thinks, especially on the quiet tunes. Love the alternate takes on the box set too. Hope this comes out as an RVG here in the U.S. someday (with most of those bonus tracks.) ===== Oh, how can I remember that "Speak Like A Child" is my longtime favorite Herbie album?? It's the one I got him to sign, when I saw Herbie and Wayne on the "1+1" tour back around 1996 or so. Also had him sign my Miles "Complete Plugged Nickel" liner notes. (Had Wayne sign "All Seeing Eye", and the "PN" notes too.) -
Thought I'd go a slightly different route with this one, and include all of Larry's dates - not just those on BN. I purposely left out "Unity" and "Into Somethin'", cuz we all know "Unity" would win, hands down -- and "Into Somethin'" would come in second (simply cuz those titles are the most widely available). I've never heard any of LY's albums outside of his work on BN --- so perhaps I'll learn something from the comments in this thread, or from how people voted - if one or more non-BN titles get several votes. It's much too late for me to type all the particulars about each album into the poll items, but here's a link to the AMG reviews - if that's of any help in voting: AMG: Larry Young bio, and discography
