Hey, I hadn't the slightest of intentions to make the Ace reissue sound shady! I was just wondering. And me being young and a child of the CD era, I tend to think of many of those labels as "Fantasy", even more so when talking of compilations/reissues on CD (it took me many years to make a difference between Prestige, Riverside and others - I simply didn't bother at first, when I got into jazz as a teenager ... no one told me about it).

Guess I'll grab that one then, if it's still around at the used bookstore nearby!

Yes, this is the label that sets the standard for how re-issues SHOULD be done. If there's an artist or genre that you like AND it's available on Ace, then you should get it there. How did they end up getting/doing some Fantasy material? I recently got the great two discs by Percy Mayfield, one from Fantasy, the other from Ace - seems in that case they're identical (except for course for the logo and some minor differences in layout). In others, they made their own Fantasy twofers. Was that one of those licensing deals, just like ZYX had in Germany?

I wondered about that post/neo thing... the really interesting folks (Roberts, Laubrock, Grimal, Laurent) go beyond that. Irabagon, btw, is also part of the uber-hip "Mostly Other People Do the Killing" (of which I got tired quickly).

It had great press here, it just started its theatrical run, will try and catch it! Btw, no matter where the Jamaican mix of "Catch a Fire" on the Deluxe edition came from - it might be my favorite Marley album!

I don't like Bärtsch that much... but the umlaut there would make proper spelling Baertsch and pronounciation for the "a" or "ae" is similar as in "where" or "there", so make that something like "bearch". (no barch and no borscht)

It's also on Fresh Sound 357, at least the 2004 version I've got. Another question though: at the end of just that track, "Lester Left Town" (CD2#1), someone (dee jay?) is heard stating that Walter Davis Jr. was sitting in on piano for Bobby Timmons that morning... which implies Timmons was absent that day, hence Davis would also play on the other tune from that June 4, 1960 date, "The Midget" (heard on CD1#3). But that doesn't seem to be noted anywhere...

Yes, very sad. His take of "Die schöne Müllerin" is part of the soundtrack of my childhood. Wish I owned it and could play it now!

Yeah, it's the corporate thieves that are actually trying to make sure that the "normal" thieves have to pay $100.000 per tune and disappear in some dark and dusty jail cells. Just make sure they're all imprisoned in the US, they've got far too few of their citizens imprisoned anyways

"Sudori" is indeed a fine disc! Some Actis Dato quartet discs could be nominated here, too... "Fes Montuno" or "Istanbul Rap" for instance (both on yvp)

I gather high gnus are quite something, too... on their migration I'm sure they get quite high when they go through that river and have to trample over others in order not to be trampled themselves.

Well, would you want to be someone else than yourself just to have dinner with what might turn out to be a semi-dumb, bloated, and maybe junked up artist? Or are we supposed to assume that - in this scenario - all artists are very likeable people and most interested in talking to us of all people?
