some previous threads (focussing way too strongly on the circumstances of Gray's useless and premature death, alas): more general ones: various others ones: and a recent one: Much too little discussion of Gray's music, indeed!

I've heard a pair of tracks - very interesting, to say the least. Not sure how well I can deal with Neneh's voice, though.

Yes, and the uhm, decency of their masterings is really not that great either. The only thing they did improve over the past years is presentation. Their releases actually do look pretty nice nowadays - but then as with other such labels (those that do the flimsy boxes with cardboard sleeves and nice-looking booklets, Quincy in Europe 1960, Stitt/Harris, Garland/Chambers/Taylor, Mingus Birdland, Taylor Hentoff etc) they're a point in case for style over substance all too often.

Same here, my card may then not reach - unless they will pass them on, which in my world would be the regular thing to do, but my world isn't hospital world.

Yeah, recently got the LHR & Williams from Japan - it's amazing! The album with Jones/Lewis is another very fine one. I'm not too fond of that twofer though - got to dig it out, it's been a while, might be time to refresh. That album with Cannonball sure looks interesting!

For Ligeti you might want to go for the cheapo box on Teldec (http://www.amazon.it/The-Ligeti-Project-Various-Composers/dp/B0016A8E1K?SubscriptionId=AKIAIVGTH525N57WM2NQ&tag=pricenoia-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0016A8E1K ) You most definitely do BUT you still need the second quartet either in the Artemis (EMI) or the Arditti (Sony) version. WHOAH! Thanks! Seems the number of classical bargains these days is really endless! You know, one of the reasons why I never yet more than dabbled with classical music is that in Switzerland, many single classical CDs cost easily 30€ - single discs, okay? Of course you can hang out in stores and then order online, but stil ... As for the string quartets ... what's wrong with the LaSalle version on the DG disc here: http://www.amazon.de/Kammerkonzert-Ramifications-Aventures-Streichquartett-aeterna/dp/B00000E3YZ/ ? Just asking - as the Artemis versions are of course easy to find, too ... (Arditti seems to be more difficult though).

Arrau with Chopin's "Nocturnes" (do you know them, D.D.? Available on a 2CD set from Decca, absolutely recommended!) Gulda with Bach's WTK The two Soviet Avant-Garde discs mentioned by D.D. above (particularly the Lourié pieces - I need more there!) Schleiermacher with Morton Feldman (Early Piano Music, another hat[now]ART disc I love!) I've lately also enjoyed Ashkenazy doing Rachmaninovs "Preludes" (got his Decca 2CD set with the piano concertos as well now). Not sure I'd rate them as favorites.

Thanks again, guys! The Box is darn cheap and might give me more directions - I'll consider it! The Glazunov disc (with Milstein and Rostropovich) looks nice! So do the Enescu, the Ligeti and several others!

Ahhhh... needle drops! Although the music on this 2xCD set is uniformly excellent I'm afraid that all the tracks on CD 1 from the albums "South Side Soul" & "Nice 'n' Tasty" both show up on my CD analyzer as being from mp3 sources. So...... "Buyer Beware"! I've seen that with Membran and with Definitive ... rarely ever did bother check. What does annoy me about Fresh Sound is that they usually cost quite a bit, and then there's Mr. Angel doing his double-talk on top of that. You should write him and ask him to make a statement on that finding of yours! I wonder if many Fresh Sound releases are MP3-sourced! (I don't wonder w/Definitive, they sound like crap, crap they are - same with Membran.)

Okay, so let's play hump the hostess now! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InUSSfZBgJk -
Only have six of them so far... definitely want them all!
-
Thanks! Would anyone have a complete list?

Any particular favorites and recommendations there? I've laid eyes on the Honegger and the Satie but haven't jumped for them (nor for any others from the series).

Found "The Closing of Winterland" cheaply in the bins yesterday (still sealed, but with broken teeth on the inner part of the jumbo jewel case, it turned out - alas never found any good replaments for those, just very cheap ones). This will be the very latest Dead I'm going to hear - guess it's a fine entry point, post "Wake of the Flood" and "Blues for Allah"?

Word on that! I've worked in a mega-corporate world for more than a decade now, and the only thing that equals the hilarity of thinking that using "proper" English will get you into a world where language isn't skull-fucked on a level equal to what the Communists did to it is the inner-circle(jerk) whine about needless government regulations and inefficient bureaucracies, when they themselves, when left to their own devices, they'll come up with more levels of waste, fraud, inefficiencies, redundancies, and just flat-out bizarre clusterfucks than even the most odious government agency. This thread is funny! Cheers on that, mate! I can absolutely relate to and vouch for the veracity of that statement! -
Joyeux anniversaire!

Pleeze excuse me while I webster the Oxford dicshionnary. -
No blackout in this case. Holland didn't fully plug in until the following year. Chick only plays wood flute during "This." Certainly you must have been aware I jest (ad -ed at own danger).

Dang, and I just bought the regular CD issue - it's one of the albums that was in constant rotation in my childhood, and it was great to hear it again. Three of the bonus tracks are on the CD, so I guess the most interesting thing would be the amazon exclusive, but this whole thing ist just too darn expensive. They really ought to be able to add some more music if they want us to pay that much!

How many percent in Shakespeare? And how many percent of native speakers understand how many percent of Shakespeare? * * * (just found here thanks to Niko - thought it fits nicely here ) -
Happy Birthday, Ray!

Glossiness has nothing to do with quality. Mosaic booklets are now printed on much cheaper stock than those of old. If they were still using high quality paper, I would seriously have to question Cuscuna's business sense in this day and age. And the fact that some booklets have thicker, heavier paper? Nothing to do with quality? (I'm not sure which ones have that, ... but the European Quincy is one, I think.)
