So, for the record, the Peiffer holds nearly as much prev. unissued live music as the two albums count for: CD1 #11-14: Live at the Cherry Hill Inn (BP-p,elp; Al Stauffer-b; Jimmy Paxson-d) CD2 #7: NPR radio (BP-p; ASt-b; Billy Jones-d) CD2 #8-10: Live from Glassboro State University (BP-p, ASt-b) There's some more Peiffer still in the can (speaking of CD reissues, that is), in addition to the second Laurie album (which is titled "Bernard Peiffer plays Cole Porters Can-Can"): "Presenting the BP Trio" and "Piano à la Mood" (Decca, 1957 and 1958, respectively), "Prelude, Fugue & Trio" (Polydor 1965) Here's hope for more Peiffer hors série sets! Make it two of them and fill them up with more live music, pu-llleeeeeeze!

Nah, I ended up buying only those with additional music or completely new (Jazz Boom N°1, Nathan Davis, Eddy Louiss, Quincy Jones, the JATP, Art Simmons). But I did get the Peiffer and Rhoda Scott sets today! Looking forward to listening to them! And the Pres/Basie disco is on the way!

That's what I'm thinking, too... guess I'll go and pick it up tomorrow!

Is Harris' "Vicissitudes" worth getting? Had them put the LP aside for me, seems it's in pretty good shape, cover too (though it'll need some gluing back together). Here's a large scan of the backcover, with the credits and all clearly visible.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
king ubu replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Hey Ubu! What's the exact date? Maybe we can meet there. Tues. May 29 I'll meet someone from France who might be the biggest ZA jazz fan I've yet gotten in touch with... but would be very cool if you'd be there, too! I'll catch the latest train back to Zurich, but I might be there somewhat earlier, not sure yet (and not sure what the other guy's exact plans are, either). -

Will hopefully make it to the Bird's Eye for Marcus Wyatt's Blue Notes Tribute (second week). -

The Nessa Juggernaut rolls on

"Before There Was Sound" is wonderful! I've given it a few spins by now, and I really love the music. It's poised, it has direction and purpose, and it's fresh and very much alive... I'm sure I'll enjoy listening many more times! -
Whatever happened to James Newton? Listened to some of their stuff early on... Check Yo Head was the one I enjoyed bost most and most often. Gee, the guy was my age... r.i.p.

Fantastic solo show by Matana Roberts last night... wonderful, very intimate venue, small crowd only, almost like a private concert. She played, chanted, recited, did some sing-along with the audience... 45 brilliant, intense, and deeply moving minutes, straight from the heart. The Oscar Brown Jr. song was friggin' amazing in solo, it was great already done by the band, but in solo, it's just mind-bending. She was hyper nervous when we arrived (about two hours early)... we found out why: her sax case had broken in the plane, the sax fell out and dropped, and during sound check, all she could play was one single note. They quickly found a repair man close by, and she was overjoyed about that (he fixed her horn for free, too, which again she found amazing). After her set, we had another quick chat, she asked if we'd stick around (for the set by Bad Panda, a rock band from Vancouver - they were effin' loud in the small venue, but they made for a quite good live act, with two ladies takin' care of bass and drum chores, and they created some propelling, stomping beats... did I mention I got kind of an obession with bass-playing ladies? )... anyway in the end, we were talking to Matana for half an hour or so, talking about her music and much more, while the guys were shutting down... got very late, but it was an unforgettable night, for sure! -
Tell us more about the Cravic et.al. and the Ferré, please!

Nancy Wilson Etta Jones Nina Simone Those being from 2011... the Vaughan looks most interesting to me, but some others might be good as well! Some of what's on the Simone I have but on Collectables and (I think) on copy-crapped EMI CDs.

Glad you liked it, Mike and Adrian! I ran it as a two disc version (a whopping 160 minutes) on another forum several months ago and thought I'd condense, skip some tracks, replace one... of course there's stuff that is missing at the later end (Brötzmann, Schlippenbach, Carl etc.) but I didn't want it to get too multi-faceted, style-wise (and with Petrowsky, Gumpert and Zerbe, there's some avantgarde in here, and lesser-known stuff, too, at that).

Vienna is definitely too far away, alas... his most recent CD, "The Story of Cathy and Me", was very good!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Finished the Rich - very nice set! Also very good liners, with an unusually long introduction. -
Thanks brownie! As usual, I was more interested in reactions and opinions and thoughts than in who could pin down which player... I *was* happy though, that Benny Bailey was recognized!
-
You're very welcome! Your replies showed great... uhn, dedication... you really *did* listen! Mangelsdorff is - of course! - the man in German jazz! His two albums "Tension" and "Now Jazz Ramwong" are full of wonderful, fresh music. You might also enjoy the entire album by Joki Freund (it was reissued in 2010).
-
The slightly annoying thing about the second is its inclusion of several (two or even three) tracks from Dusko Goykovich's "Swinging Macedonia", which is (rather easily, I should think) available on Enja. Other than that, it's a pretty great follow-up!

DL for me, too, please! Can't promise I'll post, but I'll try my best!

Into disc four of the Rich by now... I dig!
