  1. A tongue-in-cheek record cover that should sit well with quite a few around here. For the record, that EP includes the following tracks from various 1958 sessions: Count'Em (the title track, obviously) / Meet Benny Bailey / Cherokee (the first two composed and arranged by Qunincy) All (and much more) found on Dragon DRLP 130/140. Fine stuff. Don't know that music yet... that page with Swedish covers over on Birka is amazing. I've merely scratched the surface with some Lars Gullin there.
  2. Okay, thanks! So it's not that Soul Note bought some Strata East or Flying Dutchman masters... could have thought so!
  3. I guess George Russell fits with the "up to a point" crowd, too... haven't really started exploring his Soul Notes, seems like a big investment of time will be needed there, too... what I've heard was fascinating enough to get the box, for sure, but I think with him, most folks go to the end of the riversides and maybe (if they can find it) add the MPS... but the two late Blue Notes are fine as well, and so is the London Concert on Label Bleu! Btw: what's the deal with some of the Russells having been on Strata East and Flying Dutchman? Soul Note/Black Saint got started in the mid seventies only - did they acquire these recordings later on? Any others where that was the case?
  4. Agreed on all points!
  5. Interesting, Jim! And very helpful! I did indeed think of Shorter's own 80s albums for Columbia, which I got in that recent box a few months ago, too - I found listening to them a very similar experience... music that fails yet to grab me on an emotional level, but where I feel there's plenty of fascinating stuff going on and I should just keep listening and let them grow on me.
  6. Happy Birthday!
  7. Had first spins of all the Pullen and WSQ albums last week - some of it brilliant, much of it very good! And nothing really bad in there, at all. Rivers wasn't the best partner for Pullen, Chico Freeman fared better, and the Jarman/Moye trio album is great! The Pullen went straight to my favorite BSSN boxes list, next to the Dixon! Also had a first listen to the three Guiffre quartet albums... weird stuff that takes - I assume - quite some time to get used to. The synths, the electric bass, the many sounds of Giuffre (lots of flute, too!)... it's fascinating often, but it's still weird, to my ears. But it made enough of an impression that I'll keep trying to understand it, that's for sure!
  8. Nah, he found it in Billy Byers' legacy
  9. look here: http://www.ibs.it/disco/0094639436224/gino-paoli-1-enrico-rava/milestones-incontro-jazz.html (including samples) most of the tracks are up on youtube, too (click, click, and you'll find the others from there...) never really played it in a store - there's way too much singing...
  10. The Horo cost around 15$... thought that was very much okay for nice vinyl and a good looking cover (no seamsplits and such). Haven't played it yet and am still unable to talk vinyl-lingo, but I'd assume it's somewhere between NM and VG or some such...
  11. Yes they have - several in fact: http://www.testoftimerecords.com/artist.asp?id=31
  12. it was in the tabloids yesterday...
  13. I will check my copy tonight! So? Same as with mine?
  14. Aw shit... guess we all need to hunt for vinyl then.

I can now say I dig "Street Life", too - after a first listen, that is! @mike: I've got their early stuff (Mosaic, Jazz Waltz, Latin stuff, live albums... still waiting for Lighthouse 69 though, but I guess I'm not alone there).

I know about "Street Life"... but I thought Sangrey was saying "up to and including 'Street Life'" - maybe I got that wrong... anyway, the used bookstore nearby where I got most of my vinyl for the past two years had the four, and for pretty good prices, too (and in fine shape). Alas, they don't have "Scratch" (nor do they have "Free as the Wind", which looks even more tempting). Btw, while I did get the Originals CD-reissues of "I", "2nd Crusade", "Pass the Plate" and "Old Socks", I've never been tempted yet by "Images". Played some of it in a store and it didn't connect (will have to check with "Street Life", only just wrapping up "Southern Comfort" as I'm typing, "Chain Reaction" will follow first).

Picked up used vinyl of these four today: Unsung Heroes Southern Comfort Chain Reaction Street Life 300 S. Knew "Southern Comfort" when in high school - not listened since... all others are new to me. "Chain Reaction" sure has a cool cover!
  20. Thanks for you insight, guys!
  21. Okay, thanks! I guess I'll rather tend to stay away then, as there's no possibility to play the records there (but hey, I must have bought 100 there and they're all fine, so....)
  22. Interesting! Didn't even remember the label's name, but looking up their website I remember having ogled their Soft Machine releases... and I see there's also one by Nucleus (just got the BGO 2CD set with their first two albums).
  23. Okay, thanks! Good to know! Best of course is, that it's a fine recording (it's spinning right now!)
