Where dat from? The Jamal might be of interest, the parts from "More Sorcery" that were taken from the same live sessions as "The Sorcerer" were added to the Master Edition reissue (which I got fairly recently - it's great!), the remaining parts of "More Sorcery" are from the 1967 Monterey Jazz Festival (with Bill Goodwin instead of Marty Morrell on drums). Not sure I'd buy that again just for these three tunes (they're "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Spellbinder" and "Comin' Back"). The Coltrane sounds exciting - but is it just unreleased but well-known (widely circulated) or really something new, a gig that was not known to have been taped or anything? Even in the first case, I'd be all over an official release and possible sonic upgrade, but the second case would be much more exciting of course!

All Music Guide To Jazz vs. Penguin Guide To Jazz

Excellent point -
i find them worse actually, the recent JiP sets i got a bit used to, plus inside those cardboard things have the complete photographs on them with only little writing (iirc) so when they're open, those boxes don't look bad ... I see... just know them from the outside as I have no need for any of them

Yes, they're ugly... almost as bad the recent Jazz in Paris 3CD sets.
-
Didn't check, but there were two discs each by Mulligan and by Raney - so these might be complete. Solal had four, Brownie and Dizzy three each (but with Dizzy, the 1953 concert is pretty dispensable... one of what I consider his "fun years" - though I'm sure it wasn't that funny - where he played it to the people and didn't have the best of sidemen).

Are there any box bargains currently available?
king ubu replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, the Lady Day set can be had for 10£ on amazon.co.uk Also, amazon.de/.fr/.co.uk have great marketplace offers for the Lonehill set of Elmo Hope's trios. -
Happy Birthday, Garth! (edit: why can't I embed this darn thing? -> ha, it finally worked!)

The late Jimmy Gourley ... two nice videos
king ubu replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The Raney/Zollar is most likely from one of the NDR Jazz Workshops. I've got two (unreleased) parts of it on DVD. "Double Action" is indeed very good! Will check out all these videos at home tonight, thanks for compiling them! -
I'm hooked by this series... got Vols. 3, 4 and 6 now, waiting for Vols. 1, 5, and 7-9 to be delivered in the next days/weeks. Amazon.com still has Vols. 1 and 5, but Vol. 2 is way over the top right now... anyone has a lead where I might find that one?

Don't think so - sorry, got you wrong there... Banks is on Harold Land's "Take Aim", but that's about all I know of him, I think. Richard Boone starred in "Have Gun, Will Travel"... nah, seriously, Boone is from Arkansas, went with Basie later on (late 60s)... wiki has some basic info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_B._Boone

Happy Birthday, Wes - wherever you are, sure hope you're doing fine! -
So these are Dutch releases but the cheapest way is to buy from Japan? That's truly feghed up... but it's the same with Swiss labels... I buy there releases anywhere but locally. All four of them look tasty! I've never yet ordered from Hiroshi... what's the deal there? Just dropping him an email? How about shipping? Will that be added to these prices here, or is it included already? And where do you get these listings from? Will I get them once I'm on his mailing list?

All Music Guide To Jazz vs. Penguin Guide To Jazz
king ubu replied to mikelz777's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I use both but I much prefer the Penguin guide. There are lots of good reviews on AMG but the site as a whole is such a mess (for instance the separation into compilations and album rarely ever is done in a sensible way). Also, with the Penguin guides, over the years they became like friends... I know what they like and what not, I have some idea about where my taste is similar to theirs and where not, where to take their opinion with a grain of salt etc... that's not possible with the huge inconsistency that you get on AMG. -
New Coleman Hawkins Mosaic big box coming
king ubu replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No worries about overlap here. There will be a lot of, but no Chrono Classics will ever hold up to a Mosaic! -
So did Threadwell get one?

New Coleman Hawkins Mosaic big box coming
king ubu replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Wow, a Hawkins box! What fantastic, no terrific news! :excited: :excited: They should make this 20CDs and have it cover all the pre-album-recordings of the mighty Hawk, but no matter what will be in there, I'll definitely get this! Glad to have the Keynote 4CD set though, as that material will not be covered, as I understand? -
Nah... but I prefer minimalism of the "dirty" kind as it can be heard with Mal Waldron. Baertsch played (still does, I think) a weekly rehearsal/workshop/gig here, but I never made it there... his clinically clean sound world turns me off. Portico I didn't care for, from the few bits I've heard so far. I do get the "ideas" behind, but they're of little appeal to me. Add me to the ascending lark's camp regarding the frustration about much more interesting musician falling wayside because its lack of a similarly sexy hook. And with that, I'm out of this thread already, don't worry!

If you want Isla, I suggest this one:

I just ordered one of the last copies of "... and William Danced" from Ayler (via priceminister.com - not sure if they have multiple copies, probably not and I was the lucky bastard) - looking forward to hearing more Gahnold there!
