Yes, you may be right - sorry! Posting from work... the dates with Mahones, Silver etc are a rough and very mixed bag indeed. But 1950 brought some amazing stuff (including those long recordings partly released on Savoy).

I agree with most of that... but some of the titles done with John Lewis in the period you mention are pretty darn good!

Yes, Kleinschuster had his own show on ORF, did lots of shows and plenty of recording with his own Sextett, sometimes including guests such as the ones found on the two 2CD sets, but there were shows with Charles Tolliver, John Surman, Dexter Gordon and others as well. He's had a long-standing relationship with ORF. My guess is that "Art Worker" was just one (of many) radio captures (maybe a leaked pre-fm though it doesn't sound that good at all) that made it onto the grey-market (that later turned black when laws against bootleggers got stronger).

My opinion is that there's still plenty of amazing, heart-wrecking post-war music from from Pres... and that "Laughing to Keep from Crying" (including the cover shot) is as poignant an album title as was ever found.

bringing this up because of Daniel's thread... a guy from Graz whom I got to "know" via dime a bit has helped solving the mystery... also he sent me the "Art Worker" entry for his (unpublished, I assume) Pauer discography, which reads as follows: I don't think we'll get much closer to the truth than this... this might even be THE truth in this case. I trust this guy - he's been around for decades, living in an Austrian town and being in touch with ORF guys and music teachers there (which include a few jazz luminaries... still some great teachers there, such as Wayne Darling, Ed Partyka, Karlheinz Miklin, Howard Curtis, Renato Chicco, Dena De Rose and Jim Rotondi).

We've got three Triglia-threads here... digging out this one for the sad news. Bob Porter reported that Bill Triglia has died on February 3, after a lengthy illness. (It was seemingly reported by The Record of Hackensack). That's the only photo I've got (taken by Scott Sternbach, prob. 1984 during the recording session?), from the back of the Uptown album by Don Joseph (sorry for the bad quality, the LP still has the cellophane wrapped around it and I didn't feel like tearing it off). Thanks Mike! I've got that Sam Jones album (why, of course! all three of his Riversides are good!). The 2004 reissue of "The Swingin's Mutual seems to have added even more tracks - there are 20 on the 2004 reissue, and #1-12 there restores the original LP sequence. From the 8 bonus tracks on the 2004 release, the first two and the last one (Stablemates, Ghost of Yesterday and Silk) were not on the 1992 CD. Not sure all of that is enough to replace it, but this looks like a botched job on the 1992 CD to me... similar (though not nearly as bad) as when they did June Christy's "Something Cool" the first time (there I do have both CD reissues, though most of the bonus tracks from the earlier reissue are also available elsewhere).

My advice is to get the Django, especially if your Django holdings are slim. Great set. I like the Sarah set less. . . . But do think of the Frémeaux route... for about three times 60-70€ (plus some taxes, obvsiously), you'll get ALL Django. Not saying I regret having the Mosaic, of course, but just in case... me, I just ordered "Saison 3" from the Frémeaux boxes, amazon.fr has a good price for it these days! Also I dimly remember some complaints about the Django Mosaic regarding sound quality? I guess for those who complained, some of the JSP sets were a better alternative? Don't remember the details, but to my not-so-picky ears, the Mosaic and the Frémeaux releases sound good.

Indeed! Hope everyone around here has got his/her copy on the shelf at home! A truly wonderful set! Just got confirmation that they can still add the Sassy to my order - loads of listening ahead (and I've still got another few as of yet unheard Mosaics... but I guess carpe diem is what applies here... if I have the means and the price is right, I'll jump ahead and buy, not to regret later!)

Is it correct that the early 90s "The Swingin's Mutual" was one of these botched jobs where the album running order was changed and bonus tracks added in the midst (the latter I do know)? Was the 2004 or so reissue a major improval? It was a copycrapsh*t thingie over here so I never even looked at it, but I might try and get one from the US if it's worth. Just playing "Jazz Moments" for the very fist time as I'm typing - good one! Fournier is on some of the Capitol live material, but having Crosby in with him, too, is a thrill! EDIT: another question: there's this Japanese edition of "Jazz Moments" with several bonus tracks - anyone knows what these are?

My Rich/Smith order is still open because the third bit of it (Carter/Bradford) is still on backorder... just sent them an email to please add the Sarah Vaughan to that order! Hope that works! I have the Nelson and Dizzy (euro-mosaics) as well as the Mobe, Django and Tea - the others I eventually want. After my (still running) BFT, I have finally decided to get the Hackett as well, in the end!

Wot? Peiffer not interesting? I've not heard this new release but Peiffer not interesting, that's about the last thing I'd ever think of! There's another new one in TCB's Swiss Radio Days series, btw, with Mangelsdorff and François Jeanneau featured - separately - with a Swiss rhythm section... also last year Vol. 21 came out, featuring Tony Scott and Sal Nisctico - still have to get all three, as well as some older ones, too.

@Big Beat Steve: we don't disagree at all - the music is good. But it's not great, nowhere near Miles' dozen or so best albums. That's all I'm saying. But then it's one of the finest soundtracks, working perfectly well WITH the film.
