  1. Yes, sound is fine - only thing I could compare it to is what's around in the blogosphere... compared to that, the new LP sounds pretty darn good!
  2. The Tolliver of course caugth me off guard... the Lunceford is terrific news (though I must have all or most the music on Masters of Jazz... will definitely want a Mosaic booklet there! Call me crazy!). The Rivers also sounds interesting, though I don't quite know yet what my take on his big band music is... the RCAs take a while to "get" and I'm not sure I'm there just yet. Guess I ought to check out that disc "Aurora" as well, huh?
  3. Well, ZZ Top is usually in the soul/black music section over here...
  4. we share (or try to share) your concern. Really hope to see you and your posts back here when things return to normal! Same here. Wishing you all the best! Hope the worst won't take place... but the whole information situation seems to be about as bad as back when Tchernobyl happened. The concealment going on between nuclear lobbies, the whole power manufacturing industry and their politician slaves is disgusting... the spinelessness of politicians over here is hard to bear, just watch what's going on in Germany, for instance.
  5. Yes, I got to grab that clarinet compilation, too - seems like a splendid idea!
  6. Did you ever compare tracklists? Does either of them have complete Masters of Jazz discs included, or are they compilations?
  7. Something quite wrong with that entry on amazon! The cover fits the "boxed" reissues of Masters of Jazz (mostly I think they just threw in three discs, but I haven't got any of them or even had a closer look at any, but some of them turned up in stores here last year). You can see the "Masters of Jazz / Média 7" logo on the bottom left. The tracklist with 12 titles has to be wrong for a 2CD set. The ones I've seen look like this though: http://www.amazon.fr/Masters-Jazz-Lester-Young/dp/B002TMLRCW/ref=sr_1_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1300062438&sr=1-3
  8. who those? just hope not relatives of Slim Dusty (yours truly, a fellow 1/2 oz) What's a "fellow 1/2 oz"? Hackberry Ramblers - venerable and revered cajun string band; helped spearhead the string band cajun sound before the accordian came back into the music in the '40s and '50s. Their Arhoolie CD spans 35-50. There's also later recordings available from Arhoolie done by them that are very good. Roy Newman and His Boys - largely forgotten western swing pioneers from the '30s. The most pronounced jazziness of the early western swingers - lots of clarinet, some Bob Dunn on steel and great vocalists. I have a single sensational CD on the small German label Cattle. There's also a bunch of stuff on the JSP "Western Swing And Country Jazz" box, though not quite as solid. Half an aussie These two sound interesting, never heard of them!
  9. It's a compilation of Pres' clarinet tracks and was mentioned favourably in the Pres thread. Haven't gotten it yet, myself.
  10. Same here... though I dug deeply enough into that box to really, really discover and dig O'Day!
  11. who those? just hope not relatives of Slim Dusty (yours truly, a fellow 1/2 oz)
  12. I need WAY more Bley!
  13. "Criss Cross" by one Thelonious Monk!
  14. Very, very sad! What a great drummer he was!
  15. Ah well, if it was my choice, them gnomes would all be expelled to some cozy place like... Lybia.
  16. Fascinating! (Small note: Stitt's guitar player was called Paul Weeden.) This is one of only two Carter discs I have so far, and I never warmed to it... will dig it out, it's been some years since I've played it.
  17. Is music in itself ever perfect? I'm not sure about that... it can be perfect in a situation, between you as listener and what's going on in the music. I guess though that's not what you're after... I've had such situations with various kinds of music, from organ jazz to free stuff, from rock to african music. I'm not sure how I could define perfection otherwise... surely lots of Ellington's classic music is "perfect"... also lots of Pres' solos and lots of Charlie Parker's classic Dial and Savoy sessions. Monk's tune "Criss Cross" might be close to perfection... Rollins' original "St. Thomas" is a tune that's almost always perfect for me, regardless of circumstances and moods. Mingus' "Black Saint & The Sinner Lady" or Coltrane's "Crescent" and "A Love Supreme" come to mind, also "Interstellar Space" and "Sun Ship". The tune (and maybe the album) "Circle" from Miles Davis' "Miles Smiles"... can Mingus' Presents ever be perfect? With its sloppy sound and all? To me it is... Just some rumblings, sorry.
  18. Got my Mosaic order today... had to pay taxes but only for the value they put onto the declaration Argo, EmArcy and Verve Small Group Buddy Rich Sessions The Complete Roulette Sarah Vaughan Sessions The Complete Roost Johnny Smith Small Group Sessions John Carter & Bobby Bradford - Mosaic Select One of the Rich discs has a crack or some manufacturing error... it was sealed of course, so it's hardly anyone's blame. Never had this before, had small bubbles in the CD layer or scratches, but this one goes right through and is visible both from front and back... possibly it might have been caused by the strain from the spine? The discs would hardly get off once more... anyway, I'm glad I checked them all closely and spotted this in time before it might too OOP! Does anyone know the percentage of Euro sets with the Rich? It was planned to arrive at 10'000 units, mine is just #2725, so that would mean Mosaic have sold around 3000, most likely? I doubt that there were 7000 euro sets, as this was one of the more elusive ones over here... so this was likely not as good a seller as they'd hoped for. Anyway, there are lots of sessions here that look mighty tempting, and other than "Buddy & Sweets", it's all new to me!
  19. Yes, I'm a fan of this band, too! "Perk Up" is fine, and I've had a chance to hear "Jazz Gunn," too.
  20. Hm, guess I'll rather eventually get Amy's book!
  21. By not falling for the nuclear lobby's pretensions that nuclear energy is "safe"... but this is not the time nor the place to get into political discussions about this.
  22. I'm familiar with almost everything Coleman recorded as a leader and IMHO "Amsterdam After Dark" is one of his best recordings ever. "New Morning" is also one of my favorites. I'll back Amsterdam After Dark, too! I've heard the Coles before... but just gave the Coleman a first spin tonight - excellent, as you say! Hilton Ruiz' playing is outstanding, too!
  23. Gee, it looks worse and worse! Hope there won't be a big nuclear accident!
  24. Saw jewel case editions of the Collector's Edition reissues of Q and Sassy today! Guess those are the fastest selling ones of the lot?
  25. Great photo! And welcome here! Don't have the book yet but spent weeks making my way all through "Coltrane Reference" last spring & summer - amazing!
