  1. I need WAY more Bley!
  2. "Criss Cross" by one Thelonious Monk!
  3. Very, very sad! What a great drummer he was!
  4. Ah well, if it was my choice, them gnomes would all be expelled to some cozy place like... Lybia.
  5. Fascinating! (Small note: Stitt's guitar player was called Paul Weeden.) This is one of only two Carter discs I have so far, and I never warmed to it... will dig it out, it's been some years since I've played it.
  6. Is music in itself ever perfect? I'm not sure about that... it can be perfect in a situation, between you as listener and what's going on in the music. I guess though that's not what you're after... I've had such situations with various kinds of music, from organ jazz to free stuff, from rock to african music. I'm not sure how I could define perfection otherwise... surely lots of Ellington's classic music is "perfect"... also lots of Pres' solos and lots of Charlie Parker's classic Dial and Savoy sessions. Monk's tune "Criss Cross" might be close to perfection... Rollins' original "St. Thomas" is a tune that's almost always perfect for me, regardless of circumstances and moods. Mingus' "Black Saint & The Sinner Lady" or Coltrane's "Crescent" and "A Love Supreme" come to mind, also "Interstellar Space" and "Sun Ship". The tune (and maybe the album) "Circle" from Miles Davis' "Miles Smiles"... can Mingus' Presents ever be perfect? With its sloppy sound and all? To me it is... Just some rumblings, sorry.
  7. Got my Mosaic order today... had to pay taxes but only for the value they put onto the declaration Argo, EmArcy and Verve Small Group Buddy Rich Sessions The Complete Roulette Sarah Vaughan Sessions The Complete Roost Johnny Smith Small Group Sessions John Carter & Bobby Bradford - Mosaic Select One of the Rich discs has a crack or some manufacturing error... it was sealed of course, so it's hardly anyone's blame. Never had this before, had small bubbles in the CD layer or scratches, but this one goes right through and is visible both from front and back... possibly it might have been caused by the strain from the spine? The discs would hardly get off once more... anyway, I'm glad I checked them all closely and spotted this in time before it might too OOP! Does anyone know the percentage of Euro sets with the Rich? It was planned to arrive at 10'000 units, mine is just #2725, so that would mean Mosaic have sold around 3000, most likely? I doubt that there were 7000 euro sets, as this was one of the more elusive ones over here... so this was likely not as good a seller as they'd hoped for. Anyway, there are lots of sessions here that look mighty tempting, and other than "Buddy & Sweets", it's all new to me!
  8. Yes, I'm a fan of this band, too! "Perk Up" is fine, and I've had a chance to hear "Jazz Gunn," too.
  9. Hm, guess I'll rather eventually get Amy's book!
  10. By not falling for the nuclear lobby's pretensions that nuclear energy is "safe"... but this is not the time nor the place to get into political discussions about this.
  11. I'm familiar with almost everything Coleman recorded as a leader and IMHO "Amsterdam After Dark" is one of his best recordings ever. "New Morning" is also one of my favorites. I'll back Amsterdam After Dark, too! I've heard the Coles before... but just gave the Coleman a first spin tonight - excellent, as you say! Hilton Ruiz' playing is outstanding, too!
  12. Gee, it looks worse and worse! Hope there won't be a big nuclear accident!
  13. Saw jewel case editions of the Collector's Edition reissues of Q and Sassy today! Guess those are the fastest selling ones of the lot?
  14. Great photo! And welcome here! Don't have the book yet but spent weeks making my way all through "Coltrane Reference" last spring & summer - amazing!
  15. I saw him play in the summer of 2009 - had a very short chat with him and he was most delightful and played great for two hour-long sets (in the quartet of Swiss tenor sax player Roman Schwaller, with whom Cobb has recorded as well). Great experience, Paul! Best birthday present you got, I assume!?
  16. Glad to hear you're ok, kinuta and John! Seems it's much bigger than the first news implied... tsunami coming up farther south, and an atomic plant burning in Japan.
  17. Nice find. I'm under the impression that this one is long OOP. Today, a pretty lucky find myself: Mick Goodrick-In Pas(s)ing-ECM Amazon list some pretty crazy prices in the $150 range, found this copy for $8. Yes, but the fact that a copy of "Linear B" turned up in the used shoppe might indicate an upcoming reissue? Not that I knew, but often that seems to be the case... I find some rare or OOP stuff and soonafter, a reissue is out. The Goodrick is good - got the LP some months back.
  18. Glad to hear that! I overpayed... but nevermind - I wanted this! More Pres! Why weren't these Basie tracks part of the Roulette Live Mosaic? (Or are they and I forgot? Didn't look it up right now.)
  19. Got the correct 2CD edition today!
  20. Have you read the Hersch story in Jazz Magazine/Jazzman? It's in the great "at the table with" series of conversations.
  21. Happy Birthday, Paul!
  22. lucky day at the used store yesterday: Art Farmer/Frank Morgan/Lou Levy - Central Avenue Reunion Lost in the Stars - Bud Shank & Lou Levy Play the Sinatra Songbook Dorothy Ashby - The Jazz Harpist Slim Gaillard - 1945 Milt Buckner & Hal Singer (The Definitive Black & Blue Sessions) Buddy Tate - When I'm Blue (The Definitive Black & Blue Sessions) Johnny Letman - A Funky Day in Paris (The Definitive Black & Blue Sessions) George Coleman - Amsterdam After Dark Johnny Coles - New Morning Joe McPhee Po Music - Linear B
  23. I guess I meant "soaring" Welcome! Hope you'll enjoy it! But then I do assume you've been somewhat familiar with the music for a while
  24. Got my LP about a week ago... wanted to wait posting about it until I would have had time for a second spin, but anyway - this is a very good album, very much worth hearing! One of my favorite spots must be Lake's searing soprano playing on one of the four tracks! For 'merikins, there's also the possibility to order it from Adam Lore's 50 Miles of Elbow Room. Here's his blurb from his news mail:
