The Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim
king ubu replied to Larry Kart's topic in Recommendations
How's "Jobim"? http://www.allmusic.com/album/jobim-r241968 It's part of a sales on amazon.de... -
Got the quartet on Mode/VSOP - it's very good! The "Jazz Erotica" is the same that also was on an OJCCD, right? With different cover (ugly cover) and title, "Jazz West Coast"... this one:

If it's ok, I'll be sharing the link soon and will be opening discussion on Feb. 1st. I'd wish there was some more interest...

need help shipping from the US to ol' yurp
king ubu replied to king ubu's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Have no idea why, but more and more vendors on the marketplaces of amazon.de and amazon.fr are ceasing to offer international shipping, too... it's rather annoying for me, even more so as there's no Swiss amazon... -
There was a thread about it, but I can't seem to find it... Pictured above is FSRCD 539 which is titled Something New, Something Blue + Swinging 'guys & Dolls' (2 Lp On 1 Cd) Stereo Edition. Then there's this one (mono version? - it's without the Guys & Dolls bonus): Something New, Something Blue (FSRCD 381). Is there really a difference between the two? Both seem to be still in print... the bonus would be nice, I assume, but I don't care too much for it. Anyone has compared the two versions? Btw, I don't know if the fact that there are two versions was discussed in the other thread.

I haven't heard all of the Capitol Jonah's but of those I've heard IMHO "Jumpin' With Jonah" (the Capitol album that really went by that title, that is) is one of the better ones, jazz-wise. The others I've heard are OK but you got to be in the mood for them and it is easy to see why they appealed to a MOR public too. Nothing to sneer at (his records may have served as an entry door to more substantial jazz for quite a few) but in a way he simply was the trumpet's Earl Bostic of those times (though if I had to pick one I guess I'd still go for Earl Bostic ). Yes, the actual Capitol album - that's one that was on CD a while ago and it's the one I got. It has a certain charm, and I dig Jonah's playing, but it get's somewhat formulaic after twenty minutes or so.

It's great! I played some of twice, before flipping the records... will need some time to sink in, but there are plenty of beautiful moments on it! -
Which one do you have in mind? "I Dig Chicks"? The only Jonah discs I have so far are "Jumpin' with Jonah" and the compilation "Jumpin' with Jonah". Not sure I need too many more - they're very enjoyable but still I rarely play them.

Thanks a lot! The ones to brownie (who might not participate in the end) and BillF went out, too (the later arrived already).

Buddy Rich and Johnny Smith sets running low
king ubu replied to golfcrazy1984's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ouch, this is hard! Both on my wantlist... the Rich somewhat higher up, I think, but I'm not even sure. -
Forgot about Charles Tyler's "Saga of the Outlaws"... it was among the written-down stuff, had to buy it for a friend!
-
Yes! Excellent album! Didn't know about the Hawes alias either... and indeed: never enough Teddy Edwards!

Not exactly Legacy... anyone has details on this Avid Brubeck disc: http://www.avidgroup.co.uk/acatalog/info_CD__AMSC901.html They say it's "previously unreleased material recorded around the summer and autumn of 1958", studio transcriptions right from Joe Benjamin was to be replaced by Gene Wright. And what about Herman Wright? Did he play with the quartet between Bates and Benjamin? Bruyninckx has the bassist as "Herman 'Gene' Wright" for two entries (Feb 22, 1958 and Mar 5, 1958). Then, for summer 1958 (DB in Europe, Newport 1958, Jazz Impressions of Eurasia) Benjamin is listed, and beginnging with the one title from the Monterey 3CD compilation (Oct 5, 1958), it's Eugene/Gene Wright.

Yeah, it's totally stupid. For $10 less you can get Uranium Ore. http://www.amazon.co...95879041&sr=8-2 and they've got a nice cross-sell for Threadgill fans. I'd rather recommend this one:
-
June Christy - The Intimate Miss Christy Chris Connor (Atlantic self-titled) and yes on: Peggy Lee - Black Coffee!

Ha, read this thread last night and today stumbled over the double LP "Terra Brasilis" in very good condition (that's what it looks to me, I'm not talking the vinylratingolingo) for a good price - thanks to everyone, I'm sure I'll love it, will warm up that lazy turntable now... -

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Still deeply into Hill... have played several times the "Judgment" and "Point of Departure" sessions today, now going through the "Andrew" and "Pax" (or whatever again they called the first of the dates with Hubbard). Gilmore is deeply fascinating, darker than Henderson ever got and hence a more fitting companion for Hill, methinks... though Henderson on "Point..." is fascinating, too... lots of Trane in his playing there, as I hear it. And KD is a perfect match with his slightly bitter lyricism - complementing Dolphy's outward antics and Henderson's more restrained lyricism. -
Hope to hear it from that site we shan't mention here... what a great gig to have been on!

Yes, I enjoy it a lot! It's limited and tentative indeed, but it's very moving music.

There's a disc I want to buy on amazon.com that only offers domestic shipping... is there anyone willing to help? I guess easiest would be that person would order it for me and then send it across the pond... and I'd pay back via paypal (from credit card). Please drop me a PM if you're willing to help me out and discuss the details!
