  1. Some of that music was on the Giuffre set... wasn't it just some kind of intimate rehearsal/performance space?
  2. I still need to give #82 a spin myself... but first I want to finish this one. One final spin is still needed for final approval, after that the option for CDRs is up and running!
  3. Ah yes - and their policy keeps them from releasing it again. No problem with me - although I had to piece the Getz/Raney set together with various CDs (but then the Roost 3CD set is as fine a unit, I guess, as was the Mosaic!)
  4. This thread has vanished... but I finally am reading it while holding my VEE "Only the Blues" in my hands, and all of it is included there. The bonus tracks from "Only the Blues" were already on the 1991 US CD version of "Sits in with the Oscar Peterson Trio": http://www.amazon.com/Sits-Oscar-Peterson-Sonny-Stitt/dp/B0000047CM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1295392149&sr=1-2-spell
  5. We all have the "Stan Getz Plays" CD anyway, don't we? It has been around for decades, making the sales bins at least twice a year in Zurich Got to check my mail (and actually read beyond the subject line )
  6. Quentin "Butter" Jackson Harry "Sweets" Edison Julian "Cannibal" (yeah, I know...) Adderley
  7. Nah, I disagree... I still have the cheap looks and feel of Collectables, and Wounded Bird is but a tiny bit better and has nearly non-existing distribution (and horrendous prices) over here... Also, quite possibly Mosaic is hoping for a good-selling set? They certainly would deserve that!

  9. Yeah, the packaging is plain ugly ("Bar Wars" one of the worst!) but the music often is great! Love all the Woody Shaws, the Sonny Stitts, the La Roca, the Clifford Jordans...
  10. J.A.W.: just to be sure - the quartet date with Rowles and Roach will be included, then - this one: It's been on the CD of "Plays", that's why I'm asking... and I'd hate to miss out on the new alternate takes by buying the Mosaic LP set (which I'll probably rather do than getting the Hip-O, now that I have the choice... but then the Mosaic price will be even more ridiculous than the Hip-O, I assume...)
  11. Cool news about the MJQ! Don't have too much of these albums for once (ah, well... Lonely Woman, Fontessa, Pyramid and Porgy & Bess)
  12. Great to see you, Rolf!
  13. Thanks for sharing that link - interesting story (with a sad end, it seems). I was familiar with his name in the production credits, but had no idea about the man behind the name!
  14. What a weird thing to do... guess I'll look for the CD reissue of "Home Run", then! It does indeed contain "Alone Together": http://www.amazon.com/Home-Run-Howard-Mghee/dp/B00000IX87/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295219360&sr=1-2 Thanks a lot for explaining this mess to me!
  15. Dilbert & The Dodo Dodo Marmarosa The Marmalade King
  16. Yes, so far it is... and I wouldn't hold my breath for more.
  17. a little heads-up - I only recently learned that these reissues DID happen, though there's no sign on Ackamoor's website: http://www.50milesofelbowroom.com/labels/ikef.html
  18. Does anyone have correct details about these fine recordings? The band consisted of McGhee (t), Edwards (ts), Art Hillery (p), Leroy Vinnegar (b) and Billy Higgins (d). Sessions took place on three days in October 1978 (Oct. 3-5) in Venice; CA. Two albums were released on Storyville, of which I have SLP 4080 ("Young at Heart"). That one includes (from the back cover): RELAXING AT CAMARILLO 7:36 REFLECTIONS 6:36 BLUES IN THE CLOSET 7:27 ON A MISTY NIGHT 4:32 IN WALKED BUD 4:01 YARDBIRD SUITE 4:07 MOOSE THE MOOCHE 7:00 Then there was SLP 4081, titled "Wise in Time", and containing, according to the discographies: I WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOU I REMEMBER CLIFFORD IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW CRESCENT RUBY MY DEAR TIME WAITS Then, there was a CD reissue mixing the contents of both LPs: I WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOU (tk 2) 5:57 IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW 5:59 CRESCENT (tk 1) 6:57 RUBY MY DEAR (tk 3) 7:35 TIME WAITS (tk 1) 4:59 RELAXING AT CAMARILLO (tk 1) 7:39 REFLECTIONS (tk 5) 6:45 BLUES IN THE CLOSET 7:27 ON A MISTY NIGHT (tk 4) 4:32 IN WALKED BUD (tk 4) 4:00 YARDBIRD SUITE (tk 3) 4:06 MOOSE THE MOOCHE (tk 3) 6:39 The discographies tell me that there was another tune, ALONE, to be found on STCD8273 (which also contains ON A MISTY NIGHT, IN WALKED BUD and MOOSE THE MOOCHE from the "Young at Heart" LP). Now... what do these take numbers signify? That for the CD different takes were used compared to the LP? As I don't have SLP 4081, I don't know about that, but some of the timings for SLP 4080 and the CD are somwewhat different (I can't easily compare with my set-up, so I haven't tried to confirm if these are the same takes or not or if the timings on the LP are accurate). Also I wonder, why would they do a CD with ALL of "Young at Heart" but give it the title of "Wise in Time" again, when they omit one track that was on that album (I REMEMBER CLIFFORD, which besides ALONE is the one title I don't have in any version). Anyone ever cared to figure this out?
  19. No new additions to the regular series since #113 ("The Nearness of You" by Stéphane Grappelli) No new additions to the regular series since #113 ("The Nearness of You" by Stéphane Grappelli)
  20. :: BUMP :: I'm about to finalize my selections! In good time to allow for mailing some discs if required, I hope! So, please post here or drop me a PM if you're in! The music has no theme, it's just some goodies and hopefully lots of stuff to discover for most of you - no stylistic barriers in there, either... covering about eight decades (though not necessarily as far as styles go). It's a one-disc BFT, and I hope this will widen participation a bit. I'll be in touch with you, jeff, just in case anyone in the US prefers an actual (MP3/M4A-sourced) CDR. Same offer is good for Europe, I'll take care of that, myself!
  21. Happy Birthday, Tom! All the best!
  22. Yes, another beauty. I bought that after seeing it done live in London. If you enjoy that one, you really ought to check out some of Marco Zurzolo's Banda M.V.M. discs! I have these two: Beautifully recorded as all Egea releases, and more leaning towards Arabian influences, using the oud and plenty of percussion, too... here's the description for "Pulcinella" from the site:
  23. Ecclesiastes Charles Mingus Charlie Brown
  24. Yes, that's one of the finest for me, too! Then there's this one:
