  2. Yes, so far it is... and I wouldn't hold my breath for more.
  3. a little heads-up - I only recently learned that these reissues DID happen, though there's no sign on Ackamoor's website: http://www.50milesofelbowroom.com/labels/ikef.html
  4. Does anyone have correct details about these fine recordings? The band consisted of McGhee (t), Edwards (ts), Art Hillery (p), Leroy Vinnegar (b) and Billy Higgins (d). Sessions took place on three days in October 1978 (Oct. 3-5) in Venice; CA. Two albums were released on Storyville, of which I have SLP 4080 ("Young at Heart"). That one includes (from the back cover): RELAXING AT CAMARILLO 7:36 REFLECTIONS 6:36 BLUES IN THE CLOSET 7:27 ON A MISTY NIGHT 4:32 IN WALKED BUD 4:01 YARDBIRD SUITE 4:07 MOOSE THE MOOCHE 7:00 Then there was SLP 4081, titled "Wise in Time", and containing, according to the discographies: I WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOU I REMEMBER CLIFFORD IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW CRESCENT RUBY MY DEAR TIME WAITS Then, there was a CD reissue mixing the contents of both LPs: I WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOU (tk 2) 5:57 IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW 5:59 CRESCENT (tk 1) 6:57 RUBY MY DEAR (tk 3) 7:35 TIME WAITS (tk 1) 4:59 RELAXING AT CAMARILLO (tk 1) 7:39 REFLECTIONS (tk 5) 6:45 BLUES IN THE CLOSET 7:27 ON A MISTY NIGHT (tk 4) 4:32 IN WALKED BUD (tk 4) 4:00 YARDBIRD SUITE (tk 3) 4:06 MOOSE THE MOOCHE (tk 3) 6:39 The discographies tell me that there was another tune, ALONE, to be found on STCD8273 (which also contains ON A MISTY NIGHT, IN WALKED BUD and MOOSE THE MOOCHE from the "Young at Heart" LP). Now... what do these take numbers signify? That for the CD different takes were used compared to the LP? As I don't have SLP 4081, I don't know about that, but some of the timings for SLP 4080 and the CD are somwewhat different (I can't easily compare with my set-up, so I haven't tried to confirm if these are the same takes or not or if the timings on the LP are accurate). Also I wonder, why would they do a CD with ALL of "Young at Heart" but give it the title of "Wise in Time" again, when they omit one track that was on that album (I REMEMBER CLIFFORD, which besides ALONE is the one title I don't have in any version). Anyone ever cared to figure this out?
  5. No new additions to the regular series since #113 ("The Nearness of You" by Stéphane Grappelli) No new additions to the regular series since #113 ("The Nearness of You" by Stéphane Grappelli)
  6. :: BUMP :: I'm about to finalize my selections! In good time to allow for mailing some discs if required, I hope! So, please post here or drop me a PM if you're in! The music has no theme, it's just some goodies and hopefully lots of stuff to discover for most of you - no stylistic barriers in there, either... covering about eight decades (though not necessarily as far as styles go). It's a one-disc BFT, and I hope this will widen participation a bit. I'll be in touch with you, jeff, just in case anyone in the US prefers an actual (MP3/M4A-sourced) CDR. Same offer is good for Europe, I'll take care of that, myself!
  7. Happy Birthday, Tom! All the best!
  8. Yes, another beauty. I bought that after seeing it done live in London. If you enjoy that one, you really ought to check out some of Marco Zurzolo's Banda M.V.M. discs! I have these two: Beautifully recorded as all Egea releases, and more leaning towards Arabian influences, using the oud and plenty of percussion, too... here's the description for "Pulcinella" from the site:
  9. Ecclesiastes Charles Mingus Charlie Brown
  10. Yes, that's one of the finest for me, too! Then there's this one:
  11. Yeah, Uotha is positively GREAT! Angeli is plain amazing! If I read mediterranean, I also think of some Italian stuff... Zurzolo and his "banda" (several discs on Egea that betray the "artsy" feel of that label). Mediterranean is more maghrebinian/arab music and european music rather than "african", really... there's some great stuff to discover there, for sure... but I feel like I've only just scratched the surface... Didn't you mention Maurice El Medioni? I've got his "Pianoriental" disc... pretty nice one, too! If you're thinking Spain, you might as well go beyond "jazz" limits and check out Radi Tarifa or the fine "Cal" by Son de la Frontera or Benjamin Escoriza's solo disc ("Alevanta") - though that's more andalucian than spanish... also Yasmin Levy is doing some fine stuff... though jazz content is non-existent there...
  12. Just finished my fist listen to what must be the most evasive of all Verve Originals, at least in my hometown... Quite nice, really!
  13. Etta Jones Strangers in Paradise Lounge Lizards
  14. Those label-centered sets are true treasure troves! I LOVE the HRS set, and I love lots of what's on the Capitol box, too! I'd have loved a Continental set or other such label-centered releases (and of course I do not have the Commodore boxes).
  15. And in Gerald Wilson's great 40s big band, too!
  16. yeah, and your feet's too big
  17. Next up you'll get Julian Dash, too! Great set!
  18. No'Jo (um, that's the "in print" list, in case anyone wonders...)
  19. Burning Spear Marcus Garvey Max Roach
  20. Had no idea she was still around... all I got of hers is that LPR CD reissue of "The Jerome Kern Songbook" - but that was a very pleasant surprise! r.i.p.
  21. I got those and enjoyed them all. The Barney Wilen (Dear Prof. Leary) is great as well! Then I've got the Dave Pike Set and the Sugarcane discs... I think that's all I've bought so far. They're way over the top as far as price is concerned, and the liners are a bit... dilletant, but nice. The reproduction of the album covers are done very nicely though, and sound has never bothered me in any way (I'm no audiophile so I won't say it's "great" or "good" or "ok" or whatever... as long as nothing bothers me, I'm happy...) Ah, got the Hammer, too... The weirdest choice of them all is the George Duke, since there's a (very enjoyable) 4CD set done by Universal music... why duplicate anything when they have such a limited catalogue at Promising Music's? And I do want to get the Don Ellis, eventually, and mostly I want "Jazz Meets India"!
  22. I suggested that by pm already... wasn't sure it was opportune/allowed to post it in the open... I lost touch with forum rules in this respect.
  23. posted this elsewhere as part of a larger list... Hans' math is correct of course (as we all knew back when the new millenium was welcomed one year too soon), so the first four may or may not count... no discoveries such as the Monk/Trane Carnegie Hall or the Diz/Bird Town Hall, just new stuff (years given are years of recording, not necesarily of release): Sonny Rollins - This Is What I Do (Milestone 2000) Irene Schweizer - Chicago Piano Solo (Intakt 2000) Cecil Taylor - The Willisau Concert (Intakt 2000) Eric Watson - Full Metal Quartet (Owl 2000) Gianni Gebbia - Arcana Major/Sonic Tarots Session (Rastascan 2001) Carlo Actis Dato - Istanbul Rap (yvp 2002) Derek Bailey - Ballads (Tzadik 2002) Erik Friedlander - Maldoror (Brassland 2002) Irene Schweizer & Pierre Favre - Ulrichsberg (Intakt 2003) Atomic - The Bikini Tapes (Jazzland 2004) Jacques Coursil - Minimal Brass (Tzadik 2004) Richard Galliano - Ruby, My Dear (Dreyfus 2004) Septeto Rodriguez (Roberto Juan Rodriguez) - Baila!
