  1. It is indeed great ! The innards of my box were damaged on one corner though (box fine) so a replacement is on its way. And as you say, those CDs are an absolute pain to replace in their 'slots'. Glad I'm not alone there... mine arrived in fine condition, luckily. The box was flimsy and huge (almost as our beloved boxes from zweitausendeins back in the day when they had these amazing ZYX/Fantasy offers) but inside, everything was ok. I don't often complain about silly packaging, I can handle most of it (ok, my fingers get rusty from the Bill Evans Verve box, too - but I like the idea of the rusty box a lot) but this here is just silly! If it's a bit of a drag to get discs out and back in with some boxed sets, that's one thing, but if you're afraid of breaking a disc just to get it out, that's more than annoying!
  2. Wasn't the first time this happened. The cute part is how the Swiss post office wraps damaged packages into plastic bags (sealed with so much sticky tape, only scissors will allow you to get rid of it) and attached a sticker apologizing for their colleagues...
  3. Got the Miles Bitches Brew Anniversary set today (from amazon) - looks GREAT! Only thing that's a drag: you almost have to damage the foldout (vinyl size) that holds the CDs on one side. I got them all out without doing too much damage, but won't got back in there!
  4. Package already arrived! Superfast! A moment of shock, as it was wrapped in a plastic bag and had a note of apology from the Swiss post stating it came to them in this condition... underneath, the bubble-bag was dirty and looked as it might have gotten wet... but everything was in there in perfect shape! Good packing and ultra-fast shipping! Thanks a lot!
  5. Sorry, I might be slow in understanding, but I still don't see why you're asking this... is there any evidence anywhere suggesting Coltrane is NOT on this tape anywhere?
  6. Mike, you'll enjoy it! The booklet is indeed wonderful, as I've mentioned here before (I think I was amongst those who gave brownie a push...) - amazing set!
  7. Thanks! That's very good to have this overview here! (I was mistakenly looking for another 47 OKeh sides...)
  8. medjuck, I'm not deeply enough into Ellingtonia... - the 40CD set has only master takes - there's an OKeh session not on the 2CD set, originally released on Victor/RCA (1930-11-21) Not sure what else all these OKeh titles not in the 2CD set would actually be... the 1930-11-21 date is on the RCA box. Would the missing OKeh titles be alternates? Or not listed on the DEPanorama site? Sorry, but obviously I can't help...
  9. don't think there are two Joe Brazil tapes... though from hardbopjazz' description, his may be in hugely better fidelity
  10. Is the 40 cd set really what it claims? Does it have the numbers missing from The Okeh Ellington? I've not looked closer - but I think it has what the Chronologicals have, in general. Would have to dig it up and compare with the discographies.
  11. Wonderful music, needless to say! These longbox versions have turned up for amazing prices (the Coltrane, Bitches Brew and second quintet ones). They won't look as sharp as the metal spines ones but should be a lot easier to handle and flip through the pages...
  12. Joyeux anniversaire, Guy! Hope you had a great celebration!
  13. Lunceford Decca is terrific news - although with brownie's help I got his run of Masters of Jazz... the prospect of a Mosaic set is great! Some of the very finest big band jazz ever recorded! Would they be able to work from original masters, or were they destroyed in the Universal fire?
  14. You mean that small set that went OOP so fast? I won't pay those 70$ or so that you'd need to shelve out these days to get hold of it, but it's still a bit of a drag then!
  15. Yes indeed! At least the Newport and Ronnie Scott's stuff is around in very good quality! And of course there are good quality Adams/Pullen boots around... not my favorite era of Mingus though. I guess many of you witnessed that band live, but I'm too young for that. Might have another stance if this were different.
  16. Anthony Quinn W.v.O. Quine Jules Styne oops, make that Jule... sorry!
  17. That's why I wrote "would be" since this is NOT it.
  18. On the other hand, she's not been doing much to spread Mingus' own music in the past years... a release in 1997, the Cornell set, the UCLA... , still not easy to find the Monterey 1965, still no sign of "My Favorite Quintet" or any more official 1964 sets. I guess she wasn't involved in the two 2CD sets released/reissued by Universal France (the 1970 band with Bobby Jones and the 1964 Great Paris Concert). Of course what she does with the Mingus Big Band is great, but I'd really wish she'd have made use of the CD boom from the mid 90s to the mid 00s and put out some Mingus releases. Nowadays, I guess it's too late anyway...
  19. Great, thanks brownie! I guess I can live without that UK date... and of course I'll hold on to the cheapo box as it covers a far larger time period. Not sure what to do with all the Chronological Classics though... I have about a dozen from the 30s, I think.
  20. A cleaned up official release of this material would be terrific!
  21. Can I have the two Duke Pearsons, please?
  22. I got that 40CD set too, just as a gap-filler... but can anyone tell me, is all that Ellington recorded in these years to be found on the Mosaic set? I never went and checked session by session so far and I bet someone here knows anyway, saving me the work! Oh, and I'll definitely grab the Ellington set! Not right now though, but hopefully sometime next year!
  23. That's a beautiful saying - never heard it before!
  24. Wow, I had no idea she was even still around (wouldn't have occurred to me to check though). Sure would be a treat to read an interview with her!
  25. Happy Birthday, Daniel! Reminds me: I ought to play that fine disc of yours again! And some Duke Pearson, too!
