  1. yeah, of course ... one part of being intelligent is at least trying to be aware of things you don't know ... I guess provinciality is a state of mind - and it's the opposite of, well, there's no real english word, but the state you should reach after Enlightenment has been done with (and I refuse to believe that Enlightenment has failed) ... it's really you own call to make, so I'm not even sure stupid and dumb remain different options, in the end
  2. Well, the point is, whenever you write in public, you will not only write about what you do know, but also reveal what you do not know ... uttering strong opinions in fields you don't know well might not be such a smart idea since you're more likely to expose some of your blind spots ... I've enjoyed reading some of Iverson's interviews and other blog posts very much (the ones on Donald Bailey or Paul Motian for instance, the Mickey Roker interview, the big Pres tribute ...), but at times like this, he comes across as quite full of ... whatever.
  3. ouch! big ouch indeed!
  4. Yes indeed! Two discs in, I'm definitely intrigued, but this will indeed take some time to sink in! Thanks for keeping on, Allen!
  5. okay, now playing "Man with Guitar", and inquiring mind wants to know: why does "Slave Rebellion" use the changes of "Besame Mucho"?
  6. Got my package today - and did the same, "When a Cigarette Is Smoked" went into the player right away - and it's good indeed! Thanks a lot, Allen, looking forward to exploring the wealth of music!
  7. Sounds great! The part(s) I love most: but: not so easy to scare women, I guess
  8. I like the band alright, the twofer with "Gillespiana" and "The Carnegie Hall Concert" is my favourite, followed by "An Electric Evening".
  9. yeah, and I like that Zoot disc just fine - not really like, I guess
  10. Yup, will wait as well - but definitely will buy this!
  11. interesting! can that be ordered normally? (it says "for subscribers" somewhere) edit: looks like it works - and looks like I'd even get free shipping
  12. I would assume no, as that discography seems to aim at a complete Joe Castro discography, not merely a listing of what's in the box. Disc three is the one that could contain it, but it seems to be quite full with other recordings.
  13. the pic currently on amazon's website:
  14. Details on the Castro website: http://www.joecastrojazz.com/discography
  15. 40€ (minus VAT plus shipping) @ jpc.de
  16. Depends on how you define "really a fan of the Jaco period" ... Sangrey made those points already. Similar here: studio-wise, prefer the earlier albums, but live, the band keeps holding up interest. So this new set might in fact be of way more interest than the studio box (plus it's pretty cheap over here, the US pre-order price seems to be kind of a joke).
  17. Thanks! Guess I'll skip then, having both the Tutu deluxe edition (that live set isn't particularly great, they could have done better, but it was probably the one that fit best, setlist wise) and that earlier Warner set (which adds plenty of Miles' cameo tracks but omits the live recordings and only includes excerpts from "Dingo", not sure if it's the same with "Siesta" but that one is among the albums I've also got on single discs).
  18. Hey, you're good in voicing extreme opinions in curt phrases, so I'd expect you to be able to deal with a remark in return. Furthermore, albums like "Tutu" or "Amandla" aren't shit, keep trying Anyways, I wonder, as does JCR, what the additional material might be, the originally planned box was supposed to contain six discs only, it seems, so either there's more or it's been re-grouped or whatever. Of course I feel dumb now, having that five disc set.
  19. we're so glad you did .... anyone else please, every opinion is welcome, we will not laugh at you either
  20. this was supposed to come out years ago ... earlier thread: also, this thread here about another, not quite complete/smaller in scope box that did come out: more info on that older version: http://www.miles-beyond.com/lastwordintro.htm
  21. btw, pre-order a amazon.de ist 30€: http://www.amazon.de/dp/B01543DFZO/ guess at that price, this is what they call a no-brainer
  22. coming up in the fine "Jazz at the Concertgebouw" series by the Dutch Jazz Archives: Count Basie - Blues Backstage: Live in Amsterdam 1956 (NJA1502) can't find a tracklist or any other details yet, but the site gives Oct 27 as release date and it's listed (without cover, info or release date) on some yurpeen amazon sites (i.e. http://www.amazon.de/Blues-Backstage-Count-Basie/dp/B016JE8F84/) the blurb on the NJA site mentions a few classics that seem to be included: "Shiny Stocking", "April in Paris", Ernie Wilkins' "Flute Juice" (with Frank Wess on flute, of course) http://www.jazzarchiefwinkel.nl/jazz-at-the-concertgebouw/NJA1502.html 13 tracks in all, as can be read here: http://www.jazzarchief.nl/category/jazz-at-the-concertgebouw/ (news section of the NJA website)
  23. Thanks for compiling all the info on Holiday here, guys! Coincidentally just bought the disc a couple of weeks ago.
