sounds great ... alas not around the corner! but: how many are there in that quartet? -
Somewhat ambivalent about the Dave Pike Set (and Pike in general) ... four of the MPS studio albums (all but "Album" if I'm not mistaken) were reissued by Universal Germany in 2011 (part of the "Most Perfect Sound" edition that should rather have revived stuff like the Archie Shepp and Cecil Taylor albums, but it is what is, or rather was what it was). As a group, the quartet is pretty good, they're groove, rooted by J.A. Rettenbacher's soulful double bass and the flexible beats of Peter Baumeister, is really nice, while Pike and Volker Kriegel weave their lines and textures in and out of it ... as soloists, none of them holds my attention. Makes for good background listening and I guess if you're into that stuff it could be a nice sonic texture for some kinds of trips ... There was also one live album, reissued by Promising Music (the label that also brought "Dear Prof. Leary", "Fly Fly Fly Fly Fly" or "Afro-Disiaca" back but no longer has access to MPS masters now the ownership changed) - I guess I'd recommend that one ... or maybe the "Masterpieces" compilation from Motor Music (who did some MPS reissues in the mid 90s) - used copies available: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000024S2O

so ... Ornette is on two tracks only?
-
wtf indeed! Will they follow up with a mono edition later? As far as I know, Impulse only did mono as fold downs though, so I don't get the point of including mono versions in the first place -- the "thrill" of hearing what Trane heard, returning home from the sessions?

Yeah ... I'm a bit annoyed by now, since I also think that whenever something is kick-started by a crowd-funding campaign those that help funding it should get a head-start of at least a couple of weeks (but that does not seem to be the case pretty often, at least going from my own limited experience). Anyway, I'm really looking forward to hearing the album eventually, but as of now, I'm unwilling to buy it since I already did, two years and seven months and some days ago

Thanks Chuck, appreciated. I wrote a while ago but am not even sure I got a working email address.

Yeah, just noticed "Here 'tis" having gone OOP, too ... the Byrd I luckily bought a few weeks ago. I'd wish they'd list those end-of-availability-dates on CD Japan or wherever, it's really difficult to prioritize (the entire Big Band series from Universal seems to be OOP as well - some of the series seem to be OOP almost as soon as they're released, so pre-ordering is the only way to get hold of 'em).

Has anyone actually received "Pomegranate" by Stephen Haynes by now? I took part of the funding campaign, and I wrote a mail a couple of weeks ago inquiring ... I *am* patient, but ...

1959, I thought. And I almost didn't reply to this thread because I knew I would forget someone major. And I did. Herbie Nichols on Blue Note! You're right, sorry! Released 1960 on Hifijazz, not sure where I got 1961 from. And yeah, Herbie Nichols of course! His was one of the first names that crossed my mind seing this topic, but he's been mentioned and I'm not sure how useful it is if I do another list of artists already mentioned

Thank you! and to continue.... I've a duplicate of 'The New Standard' - Jamie Saft, Steve Swallow, Bobby Previte https://www.rarenoiserecords.com/jukebox/ssp/tns/ UK or European home required. please PM taken, just in case going on vvacationfor a few days now, but I'll see to have something to pass on, too ... got some duplicates around (actually passing on duplicates all the time, just not in this thread ...) -
The best trio album by Hope (Jeff mentioned it, Hifijazz/Contemporary/Fantasy) is from 1961. Not that it matters much since it fits the bill.
