  1. I have ZYX versions of those (Riverside just box with couw-lets, Fantasy with small box and small booklet, but it has all the info, and the prize was more than just right...)
  2. Oh c'mon, what's all that fuss about Duke P? No one will pay more than 20$ a pop, and he's not a great tinkler anyway On a more serious note: I had pretty much the same first impression of "Natural Essence", but just an hour ago I searched for it (a burn only), since I feel like giving it another spin soon.
  3. Why not just add the one Mobley track with Jackie to "4,5,6" and do that and the Mobe as is anew by RVG? (And please get rid of RVG's pathetic message of him as a "medium" between them poor misunderstood artists and us... the compression the artists certainly didn't hear as part of their vision, did they?)
  4. Yes, Carrothers is a fine musician. I just played one of his discs last night - a fine trio recording: That's the only of his recordings I own so far, but I like it. It's a slow growing one for me, not one that comes screaming at you, but that's just fine.
  5. A few months ago I bought the above mentioned It's In The Twilight by Paul Shapiro - excellent!
  6. Thanks for the follow-up on Schweizer, Larry! I was reminded of him recently when I found the disc with his organ band in the sales bins and then again by a Normal Garden broadcast on swiss radio... his tunes, arrangements, indeed his ideas are special, yes! Of course Von Freeman and Fred Anderson! Irene Schweizer was a similar case. Until the Intakt label had been founded 20 years ago, she had some releases here and there (most notably on FMP), but she never quite "made it" and had day jobs etc. Great that Intakt is so dedicated to documenting her musical development! Her most recent solo disc, "First Choice: Piano Solo KKL Luzern" (Intakt CD 108) is great, and so is her "Chicago Piano Solo". As with Freeman or Anderson, she got rather well known over the course of the last two decades, so she is a bit beyond this thread... Recently deceased Fredi Luescher, and before him also Urs Voerkel (he died a few years ago) would have qualified. A gifted pianist Luescher, and Voerkel some sort of father figure for the Zurich free scene.
  7. admittedy, I am using the search function as well whenever it makes any sense...(favorite counter example is still joe guy) don't know why though Sorry I didn't see the other threads. I'm fairly new to this group, so I'm figuring out all the ins and outs. Bear with me. It'll take me a while! As for Jazz in Paris, they've also issued some DVDs. I saw 'em in Paris when I was there earlier this summer (along with the cool new box sets). 'Course, there's probably a thread on those too!! DVDs? No discussion of them here before - do you have any more information?
  8. Got 5:55 today, gave it one spin and liked it. Not sure if there'd be enough interest, so I thought I'd post here. I think it's nice that she sings a lot in english - puts her somewhat apart from most other french chanson singers... also it's nice that Jarvis Cocker helped out on a couple of songs. Not that I knew him that well, but the one Pulp album I have (This Is Hardcore) I love a lot!
  9. Hey, I'm not at all a devoted fan... but borrowing, stealing and copying has always been an integral and important part of the arts... I was just a wee bit irritated by your rigorose statement! Anyway, I'd of course prefer it if the disc would list the other/real composers, too... a statement such as "based on [...] by [...]" would be fine... but Lee's "Thingin'" is his tune, too, and reference is only given in liner notes, not in composer credits.
  10. Are you as rigid in judging your own self, too? Sorry to hear you won't be able to listen to none of that jazz any more, it's all a ripoff... maybe build yourself a monochord, instead of listeing to all those folks ripping off each other?
  11. definately!
  12. Isn't it a bit lame? I'm not saying it's bad, but there's a sameness and a restrain that I found a bit astounding and maybe a bit of a letdown, given the combination of Horace & Bags... and Kay can drop them bombs if he wants, so that's no excuse (dig "Bags & Trane" for Kay getting at least twenty times as busy and loud as the MJQ would have allowed...) (I have the normal OJC, btw, just talking of the music, not of the sound.)
  13. great thread, guys... I told ya the Collector was a good film, Mr. Roundtree!
  14. That's the one I picked up, I think... just last week in a sale. Haven't played it yet. I totally love the one Tusques disc I have (with Colin and that drummer McGhie), so I thought I'd get this one...
  15. I'm glad I have the two you just mentioned, Matthew - not that I'm listening to any Evans right now (I know you're in an Evans period...), but it's great that I was able to get them for a good prize at the zweitausendeins sale... maybe I should just wait for the Secret Sessions to appear there, too... will likely cancel my order, it's too much money to spend right now for me...
  16. Can you also beam that lady in her mid 60s incarnation my way? Full with MD number and scribbling and yellow and pink sheet, please?
  17. Oh yes, Buck Hill is great! I have just found another of his Muse albums in a sale a week ago, with him on clarinet for half of the tunes. Beautiful, and I was caught totally off guard... had no idea he was playing the clarinet, too!
  18. Thanks Ron. I guess that 80 euro in the end beats 90 $ plus tons of shipping costs, plus I'd need someone to buy it for me etc., so I guess 80 euros is just fine. There will be an added 10-15 for customs, I'm afraid, but that would be the same if I get it from the US, I'm afraid...
