I think Duke Pearson did what he could during the circumstances. For example, he did produce Herbie Hancock's last two BN albums, and they're good in my opinion. Oh yes, they're very good! But they're in a totally different direction than the things musicians like Donald Byrd and a bit later Bobbi Humphrey and the Mizells did... I assume that's the stuff that went down the toilet? Of course it's a question of taste, in the end, but I do consider most of the late 60s BN output in a different category (and a less intriguing, at that) than the stuff they released up to, say 1966 or 1967.

Chiming in late here, but in this case the "people" suck. Thanks for your account of the story, Kevin. What a pity that these tradinionalists/album-fetishists couldn't just buy the japanese reissues! As for the Smith, I have the RVGs and an old version of "The Sermon" and someone here kindly made me a burn of the old "House Party" disc. The Mobley's don't annoy me as much, as they contain all the material and I didn't ever hear them before, so the RVGs and the Conn is how I got to know that music first. Still I wouldn't have enjoyed it less if it was grouped by sessions. Main thing, in my opinion, is that all the music gets to see the light, not how it is grouped. Even the annoying bunch of folks should by now have caught up with CDRs and should be able to re-compile their beloved albums, no? And as one additional thought: the vinyl album is a past concept. That doesn't mean it is (or was) bad, not at all. But somehow it's a bit weird to wish for vinyl album replicas in the new and very different format... if you want the album, buy vinyl, if you buy the CD, do some burning if the track-order of a CD doesn't fit with your tastes.

Duke or Wayne?

This is strange... but the website, doesn't it stem from the time when they were still (?) linked to Atlantic? The only interaction I had with Savoy was about that disc of the Charlie Parker 8CD Savoy/Dial etc. box that had wrong speed... Dan Marx answered those mails, I think, and was very kind and helpful. But that was at least two years ago. (And it turned out my disc was alright, but me having gotten that set pretty late was panicking about them still being able to replace defective discs... he helped me confirm that mine was alright and was very kind in doing so.)

Here's the Marge, a pretty noisy affair, plenty of non-LP material on the CD (it's about twice as much music as was on the LP): No Lowe expert at all, but I love "Bodies and Soul" (CIMP) quite some. A few very, very moving tunes on it. Then I can add yet another recommendation for "Fresh". But I still need to hunt "The Flam"... and a few others, I assume, reading this thread!

It is good!

Someone better get that Randy Weston Monterey '66 now! Hell of a great disc, with Booker Ervin!
-
But Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. is a dog, that I know for sure!

Isn't one of these the same as the Pettiford Vogue release? I only have the other of the Birdlanders discs, but I'm not quite sure if the Vogue covers the second one. These are all Henri Renaud produced NY 1954 sessions, right?

Definitely more Teddy Edwards! All there is, I'd say - what a fantastic musician!

Sad news on this sunday morning. R.i.p., Dewey Glad I caught his one Zurich concert of the last years.
-
yes, it´s unfortunatley only one track with lester "lester leaps in" with charlie shavers. but it´s not a few years since their last release. there was in january one with benny goodman from 1950: http://www.tcb.ch/news.cgi?list=month|id&a...2006&sort=r keep boppin´ marcel Didn't know that... they did plenty of BG releases, but I don't have any of them. Earlier they had the blue spine series, dedicated to BG (there was also a box). But since their discs are so expensive, I haven't checked out many of them.

I gotta tell ya, this conjures images of an entirely different type of anal fun...

I saw the CD last week, wasn't aware of this great series ("Swiss Radio Days") being continued, since it's been a few years since their last release... didn't have a closer look, as I don't need more OP (or Ella) and Pres isn't noted on the cover... so it's just one track with him? Will have to play it at a store to decide if I really need it...

Nuff said! Nice one! And definitely legit (but watch the spelling!):

I've smoked with my fair share of aliens. They seem to like to listen to Black Beauty at melting volumes, full f'ing blast. Pretty cool folks. So you were getting laid by aliens? You'll have to pity poor sevenfour and invite him over next time!

The Zurich concert is out on Gambit also, and I wouldn't think Storyville sued them... anyway, these radio recordings are problematic, since the radio stations don't even really own them for release... I have both the Miles discs and they do look fine (and are great), but I still consider them boots...
-
And the older transcriptions etc. issued by JU are not copyrighted in Europe any longer, so anyone can release them - question would be are they ok to be sold in the US. This makes me sound pretty catholic now... you know I am not bothered by the morals of this too much, my friend!
-
Maybe, Agustín, but how do you explain their Miles Zurich 1960 bootleg (a radio recording), or their Miles compilation that contains the Newport "breakthrough" gig of Miles', as well as other radio recordings from Europe and the US? These are most certainly bootlegs, don't you think? Not sure if that applies to all their releases, but these and the Dizzy look plenty like boots to me!
-
I don't have any of those, but half of a live gig from the US (Chester, Penn., I think) that has been released on the slightly doubtful Jazz Unlimited label (they're linked to a serious one, Storyville I think, but what they release are actually boots that just look a bit nicer, are better documented and include some nice liners, but they're still boots, I think). Here's the cover - great disc!

Art Hodes please!

One kid was doing the hippy dance with some serious skill...and he yelled at the band, between songs... "do something in seven!!" Then he was all over the place. ... ... screaming "I wanna get laid in seven!"

I should be able to catch Stanko and the guys again in about two weeks! :-)
