  1. Mike, please count me in, too! You did already, I suppose, or are there any other strange swiss people who love jazz? ubu
  2. This reminds me it's high time for me to listen to the BN box again! Has been way too long since I had any Nichols playing... Happy birthday! ubu
  3. That was the shittiest job of the VEE series! That whole Cats meets Chick album would/should/could have fitted onto the Terry disc... No info on Norma Carson for me, but poppin' this up! ubu
  4. Brandon, why not try the link brownie posted above (http://www.universalmusic.fr/servlet/Front...d=227476&page=2) Maybe there's some feedback-link hidden somewhere? ubu
  5. Not the biggest of fan, but I have one CD (I think it's "Blame it on my Youth"). I saw here live a few years ago at a festival (she was the free-admission act between main concerts - not a bad thing, the Goldings-Bernstein-Stewart trio was there for free as well), and she was quite good live. ubu
  6. Happy Birthday!
  7. I cannot understand people picking on Leo Wright's intonation, where Jackie McLean's is worse much of the time ... He's totally okay to these ears on the Richard Williams Candid - Wright played in the Berlin RIAS big band, which would not have happened with intonation problems. Some prejudices die hard. (Edited for typo.) You're absolutely right of course, Mike! That was not my opinion, in that last post of mine. ubu
  8. Big fan of Richard Williams here! (And couw will pop in, too, once he'll be back from the seemingly www-lacking Netherlands...) I think his Candid album is at least ok or good. Seems many people don't like Leo Wright (intonation, mainly, is the problem, I think). He's one of the reasons, it seems, why Blue Note didn't want to release the first Blue Mitchell album (the other and hopefully main reason being that soon after it was in the can Blue had taken over the Horace Silver group as his own working unit, thus the first album would have been somehow dated on the moment of its release, already). The two "Live at Pep's" Impulse! discs by Yusef Lateef are among my favourites, and Williams is smoking on them, as is Brother Yusef and the rhythm section (with Mike Nock on piano). Williams can be heard on some Birdland broadcasts of Mingus' 1961 band. Seems Mingus liked him a lot - what a pity that there is no small group Mingus album with Williams featured! ubu

Happy new year to everybody! ubu
  10. Happy birthday Tony! ubu
  11. Thanks again, Mike! Generally I do agree with the original albums/complete sessions thing, but there are albums that are just perfect as what they were: albums. Thus there are cases where one gets to love an album too much to replace it with a complete sessions reissue. ubu
  12. Stefano di Battista - a fantastic alto and soprano player from Italy. Check him out!
  13. yup, and add Rudy Williams!

Have been listening to this album quite a bit recently, and enjoy it more and more with each listen. Ortega is really an original voice, largely cliché-free, and drummer and pianist are outstanding here (particularly the drummer!). Good, good stuff. I hope Ortega records something good (not like his recent "On Evidence" bullshit) soon. David, there's another recent Ortega disc out, I saw it in a store, but haven't listened, it's a quartet with guitar, bass, and drums, and I believe it was on a French label... google may help, I forgot the title.
  15. You shall like it, I assume! It's a very low-profile album, rather intense, actually, if you know the story of his illness that stands behind. Need to listen to it again soon. Among the few trio discs I have, this one is another favourite: I might be biased on this, as I got it when I was maybe fifteen, and fell in love with it instantly. One of my first jazz discs. ubu
  16. as Lon said, definitely this one: And if you're in for some really nice, very personal, and simple playing, check this one out: It contains the first recordings after Jarrett's recovery from that strange disease he was suffering of. No big improvisations, just Jarrett at the piano playing some nice songs. ubu
  17. I'll get the old one too. The new one has very good sound to my ears, if the old one is significantly worse, I'll keep the new one, if not, I'll downgrade... pretty ironic, isn't it?
  18. Same here. Very sad news. Give my consolations to Elizabeth. ubu
  19. Haven't really listened to it yet, am flooded with new music... I can do without "Genius After Hours" when I get the old version of the "Great Ray Charles", if I understand your discography correct, right? The Genius disc compilated a few left overs from the first Charles/Jackson date and the three Great dates, also correct? Strange! And indeed, if you didn't own and love the albums just as they came out back in the day, for us CD-buying folks, straight LP reissues in these cases are nonsense! ubu
  20. He's getting pretty courageous, isn't he? What disc would you recommend, then? I have thought to check them out for quite some time. ubu
  21. This is really sad news
  22. To be exact, they're called "King Übü Orchestrü" - I still need to check them out, sounds like an interesting band!
  23. Mike, did you check the Rhino disc in that store? Thanks again for posting the discography for these sessions above! I got (not by pure accident, of course) the Charles-Jackson set, and will now have to get the old Great Ray Charles disc, as well (some store here has it cheap). ubu
  24. Happy Birthday!
