I still like the Yankees chances. Pettitte, pitching at Yankee Stadium with the crowd behind him, certainly has a better shot at getting by on three days rest than did poor A.J. Burnett. Pedro has to get over his Yankee Stadium history and even if he does, the Phillies are stuck between a rock and a hard spot if this goes to seven games. Lee is out unless they need him for an inning, so that leaves them with slim pickings. If Pettitte doesn't have it, then Sabbathia goes and if he doesn't, Burnett didn't pitch enough tonight so as to be completely off the list. Like I said, I still like the Yankees chances. Knock on wood. Up over and out.

Plus Coleman is a 100% American Hero in my book. Classy guy, war veteran, never bad mouthed anyone. I feel lucky to have grown up listening to him broadcast all those truly terrible Padre games. Tucker Asford, now that is really a name from the past, next you'll be mentioning Ivan Murrell. Here's an interesting piece on Ivan Murrell. Were you aware that he passed away in 2006? Major, major, major mistake to pitch Burnett on three days rest. When you're up three games to one, you have the luxury of taking chances to position yourself for a game six and even a game seven, if necessary. That means you start Gaudin and cross your fingers knowing that you have Burnett and Pettitte ready to go, each with four full days of rest. This is the kind of chuckleheaded decision making that can wind up costing you big time. I think Girardi's problem is that he manages with his head and and not his heart. Up over and out.

Last night McCarver said that Girardi had the option of bringing Joba Chamberlain back to pitch the bottom of the eighth even though Matsui had already pinch hit for him the top half of the inning. He's kind of like Jerry Coleman who I think may still broadcast for the Padres, except he's not loveable. Known as the "master of the malapropism", Coleman is famous for saying things like, "The first pitch to Tucker Ashford is grounded into left field. No, wait a minute. It's ball one. Low and outside." Here's a link to a website I stumbled on that show all the World Series rings distributed by the winning teams to their players since the practice was begun in the early 1920's. If you click on each ring, you'll see other views plus some memorabilia from that year's Series. At the very bottom of the display, you can click on the icon and it will show you what the teams gave to their players before they gave out rings. Hopefully, my Yankees will be selecting their 27th ring design shortly. http://wsrings.stadiumpage.com/ Up over and out

New Sherlock Holmes movie
Dave James replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Count me firmly in the Rathbone, Nigel Bruce camp, especially with regard to their first two films together, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of the Baskervilles. IMO, when they stopped making the series in 1946, they might has well have padlocked 221 B Baker Street for purposes of making movies. This new one with Downey looks like all style and no substance. Typical Hollywood. No one is any better at taking a good story and mucking it up. Up over and out. -
Actually, the Yankees have been up 3-1 in the Series eight times before this year. They won all eight. Up over and out.

I know it sounds like 20/20 hindsight, but I thought Girardi should have pulled Sabbathia after Rollins and Victorino hit the ball hard to start off the bottom on the seventh. Instead, he leaves him in long enough for Chase Utley to dial 9 for the third time in the Series, all off Sabbathia. That's a run you didn't need to give up. Up over and out.

All the Things You Could be If Concord were your Mother
Dave James replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've said this before, but I think Mosaic is missing a bet by not focusing some of their efforts on music that has never been on CD. There have to be more than a few dormant and/or active labels that own the rights to music that hasn't seen the light of day since its original release on vinyl. That would be way cool and, IMO, a great idea for a series of Selects. Up over and out. -
That was a nice win. So much for Jimmy "Nostradamus" Rollins and his prediction that the Phils would win the Series in five. I found it highly appropriate that his at bat in the ninth resulted in the 27th out of the game. A truly gutsy performance by Pettitte. He clearly didn't have his best stuff, but he battled, hung in there and wound up with a win. I'm impressed. That's what experience is all about. Up over and out.

C'mon Phil Hughes. If you can be as strong as Chamberlain was earlier, it will bode well for the balance of the Series. Up over and out. So much for that thought. Up over and out.

Well that's certainly one of the differences between music then and music now. Can you imagine having to pitch correct someone like Chris Conner or Jo Stafford? I realize that the studio was important even back then, but it was more in terms of instrumental ability than lack of talent being propped up by electronics. Up over and out.

Don't give up the ship...it's still early. Opponents have hit well over .300 against Hamels this post-season, so, hopefully, the Yanks will start getting to him just like everyone has. Whoa...hold it...that's a home run for A-Rod. No way they can't turn that call around after the replay. I'm signing off assuming the score is now 3-2. Up over and out.

Wow, it would be a godsend for the Yankees to have the game scrubbed tonight. This would be way better than having a decent fourth starter. Unfortunately with Bud at the helm, I don't think that's going to happen. Up over and out.

I'm afraid Girardi is charting a dangerous course. While Sabbathia has shown that he's capable of going on short rest, neither Burnett or Pettitte have that kind of history. Needless to say, this emphasizes the importance of having a reliable fourth starter. To me, it also points out the folly of trying to turn Joba Chamerlain into that guy when he was so effective in a set-up role. I'm not so sure that the Yankees haven't messed him up for good by playing this shell came with his career. At any rate, let's take first things first and hope for a solid outing from Pettitte tonight. We can worry about the other stuff later. Up over and out.

Marc Myers over at jazzwax.com has a nice piece on DeCarava. Among other photos, there's one of John Coltrane with Ben Webster. Up over and out.

Can't wait for Oregon USC tonight. Halloween at Autzen Stadium will be something the Trojans won't forget anytime soon. Hopefully, what the Ducks have shown both offensively and defensively over the last few week will again be in play tonight. Folks around here are mighty amped up about this game. You might even say THEY'RE HOOKED ON QUACK. Up over and out.

Chewy, First of all, what was it I said he was? You know I'm a major fan of the Beach Boys and of Dennis Wilson. I've seen them live in all of their important iterations, including twice when Brian was still touring and one of their CD's is on rotation in my car as we speak. I love those guys. You're right about one thing, though, and that's that I don't think Dennis lived his life very intelligently. You could put his picture next to the definition of "hedonism" in the dictionary and you wouldn't be missing the mark. Nonetheless, for better or for worse, he lived his life doing pretty much what he wanted to do. How many of us can say that? Dennis was the "soul of the BB's"? On what basis? I'm of a mind that Brian was both the brains and the soul of the Beach Boys. Everyone else was just along for the ride. Would there been a band without Dennis? Most likely. Without Brian? Not a chance. I know there are a lot of fans of Pacific Ocean Blue in these parts, but I've never quite gotten it. I guess it's pleasant enough, and Dennis does have an effective voice, even if it's not great one. Honestly, I couldn't call the album anything more than OK. Lastly, your assertion that P.O.B. was "the greatest BB solo LP" is what Shakespeare calls "damning with feint praise." By that I mean, greatest BB solo LP compared to what? Up over and out.

Agassi and Crystal Meth

Did you know a fair percentage of Agassi's hair back in the day was fake. Hair weaves and such. The gilt continues to fall from the lilly. Up over and out. -

One Box, 3 CDs: MC 5: Are You Ready to Tesitfy
Dave James replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Allen, I thought The Rationals were kind of like the stateside version of the early Kinks. We had bands in the Northwest that were like that. BTW, I'm not down by any means on the MC5, especially live. They may have generated more energy than just about any band around at that time. I still have "Kick Out The Jams" on CD. I admit to pulling it out every now and then when I need that kind of fix. Up over and out. -
One Box, 3 CDs: MC 5: Are You Ready to Tesitfy
Dave James replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'm afraid if you listened to all three of these back to back, your ears might fall off. There was a time when I thought Starship was about as good as it could get, but then again, at that point, I also dug Iggy Pop & The Stooges. Not to engage in the black art of thread-mixing, but my fling with the Motor City 5 is an affectation of the person in me that I've learned to ignore. Up over and out. -
Poor albums by good artists
Dave James replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Not sure I can see Jimmy Smith behind the wheel of a three tiered Wurlitzer announcing that not enough skaters came on the floor for the Grand March, so the next number will all skate in reverse. Nonetheless, even though I think I may own every Blue Note he ever did, he's not someone I listen to often. He has a tendency to go over the top. If I had to pick a favorite, I guess it would be Crazy Baby. Oh yeah. If anyone's keeping score at home, count me among the fans of Five By Five By Monk. That's how I cut my teeth on Mr. T. John Bonham? The prototypical heavy metal drummer? The straw that stirred the Zeppelin drink? Blasphemy! This cannot go unpunished! I sentence you to three hours of cool out time in the Mr. Turtle pool. Up over and out.
