  1. Noticed on the Criterion website that Costa-Gavras' "Z" will be out later this year. That's a good 'un. Up over and out.
  2. Make sure to stay with this at least until the music starts, if not longer. Interesting sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3gp7B8WC4Q Up over and out.
  3. Start the playoffs today says I whilst my boys are hotter than the hubs of Hell and while the Sux, well, suck. Two for the Yanks in the bottom of the ninth tonight to win by one over the Royals. Another solid start from A.J. Burnett. They're now 10 1/2 games up. The lead has mushroomed in just the last week. Up over and out.
  4. I've never warmed up to Streisand's voice. Too nasal, too Broadway, too over the top, although I confess that the duet she did with Barry Gibb, Guilty, is currently on my iPod. As an actress, I think she was good in The Way We Were and Prince of Tides. I like both movies a lot. With regard to the issue at hand, leave us not act like Babs has never set foot in the Village Vanguard. Way back before she became famous. Here's a quote from Lorrraine Gordon's book Alive At The Village Vanguard: Miles Davis was playing at the Vanguard and one afternoon - this was still the era of Sunday matinees - Max asked Miles if he would accompany this girl singer Max had brought in for a tryout. And Miles said, in his inimitable, charming way, I don't play behind no girl singers. And he didn't. That girl singer was Barbara Streisand. Barbara did sing at the Vanguard. Without Miles. Up over and out.
  5. Watching those motherfucking assholes celebrate will be nauseating and fucking infuriating. Up over and out.
  6. I'm pretty sure the MC is Michael Vick. Up over and out.
  7. Alexander, Thanks for the clarification. That makes a lot more sense. However, I think I will stick by my guns and just get the stereo versions of the last three albums. Up over and out.
  8. Up until tonight, I was seriously considering adding the Beatles stereo box to the mono box I got last week. However, after listening to both the mono and the stereo versions of Help which I assume is the same mix you get in the box, what's the point? The mono mix is so sonically superior, there's really no reason to pay $200 or more for versions of tunes you'll probably never listen to. I'm just going to grab the single CD's of Abbey Road, Let It Be and Yellow Submarine and be done with it. I almost feel like I'm missing something when it comes to the stereo option, but I can't figure out what it is. Up over and out.
  9. What do I think? I think someone may be spending way too much time in thrift stores. Up over and out.
  10. Two observations about Maynard Ferguson. 1) Double high C pyrotechnics are easily as annoying and distracting as scat singing. 2) He has huge hands. One observation about the band's clothing. Their jackets remind me of a Nutter Butter Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookie. Up over and out.
  11. I guess it depends on how you feel about leg room. Seems like it would be plentiful in this configuration. Having said that, I don't fly very often, but the idea of staring into someone's face for even five minutes is not my idea of a good time. Plus, it might encourage small talk which is one thing I have no interest in doing on a plane, or anywhere else. Up over and out.
  12. I sent a note to Mosaic on Friday about the sets that are on backorder. Here's what they said: Thanks very much for a very supportive e-mail. The Johnny Smith and Jazz Crusaders are expected back in a few weeks. But there is no specific information on the others. Better this than nothing I guess. Up over and out.
  13. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9g24RQOl0g There's also a second half of the audition available on YouTube in case you need more evidence. Up over and out.
  14. Better late than never. Happy birthday Mr. Cranky Pants. Go Yanks! Up over and out.
  15. One listen to "Tell Me Why" or "Kansas City" should answer this question once and for all. Up over and out.
  16. TK, Yeah, but what a great way to go. I'll bet you woke up with a smile on your face. Up over and out.
  17. You mustn't say things like this to those of us who thought waiting on the Lou Donaldson set was a pretty safe bet. I've scoured the internet and every foreign source I can think of and all I can find is one huckster who wants $299.00. Even in my state of wanton desperation, that ain't gonna happen. Up over and out.
  18. This is pretty cool, especially the reaction. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4483922&a...egoryid=2378529 Up over and out.
  19. Too bad the guy singing doesn't sound like Uncle Junior. Up over and out.
  20. If this is from the Eugene Landy era, and I think it is, it's a remarkably coherent Brian Wilson. Up over and out.
  21. Saw this in the NYT yesterday. Even though I was never much into folk, I appreciated PP&M not as much for their music as their political presence. They were early supporters of the civil rights movement and early opponents of the war...and not in a passive way. Their music was what it was, although I confess a lingering fondness for "Leaving On A Jet Plane". Also, know this. Without "Puff The Magic Dragon", we all would have been deprived of one of the best scenes in the movie, 'Meet The Parents". RIP, Mary. You were a good person. Up over and out.
  22. This has to have been very early in their careers. I'm guessing they feel even stiffer than they look. One other thing. Performing without your instruments, when you're used to having them, even if it's just a prop for lip synching purposes, is like trying to play hockey without a stick. Up over and out.
  23. I love this Tommy LiPuma quote: "I have to be careful. I can't take Willie over the line into straight-ahead jazz." If I were Tommy, I doubt I'd lose much sleep over this. Up over and out.
  24. Some of the sound is relatively good and some is downright awful. Also, keep in mind that Benedetti for the most part only recorded Bird's solos, so the set is made up largely of snippets as opposed to entire tunes. Still, if you're a Parker fan, and it sounds like you are, I would consider this to be an essential part of his discography. Just know what you're getting into before you take the plunge. Up over and out.
  25. I agree with Dan. Any recording that includes Wynton Kelly is a sure thing. One of my favorites is the four disc live set, Miles Davis in Sweden. It's available from Dragon Records. Primo Kelly both in a supportive or a solo context. Up over and out.
