  1. Anyone familiar with this group? I've purchased two of their CD's from Dusty Groove within the last few months and I must say, they are shockingly good. Not that Italy is necessarily bereft of a solid jazz history, but this is as jammed up and jelly tight a band as you're likely to find without regard to point of origin. Two Z snaps for these guys. As former Wall Street Journal movie critic Joe Bob Briggs used to say, "Check it out." Up over and out.
  2. Anyone see this? Links to recordings are included. Yours for the Buy-It-Now price of just $21,000. http://cgi.ebay.com/LOST-Wes-Montgomery-Ma...1QQcmdZViewItem Up over and out.
  3. Have you seen these things? They'd knock a buzzard off a shit wagon at 100 yards. Up over and out.
  4. This gal kind of reminds me of Tony's Russian girlfriend on the early seasons of The Sopranos. Up over and out.
  5. So this guy files Art Blakey under "B" and the Jazz Messengers under "J". I think that about tells you all you need to know. Up over and out.
  6. Please don't hurt me. Tonya Harding between the end of her skating days and the beginning of her boxing "career". Up over and out.
  7. Moose, Even if you're the one who was making the call, this is still one of the toughest things anyone has to go through. The fact that it appears this was her decision and not yours makes it that much more difficult. Taking the long view at this point is difficult. There's all the recriminations and second guessing that need to be worked through before you can even begin to put this behind you. Nonetheless, you've at least moved forward to the point that you know you want out of Louisiana. Certainly, a change in scenery is a big first step. The most difficult thing to when you're still reeling is to think that things can get better. But, you know what? They can and they usually do. For sure, it may take awhile, but you have to believe they will. Oregon? I've been a lifelong native. Any idea where you might wind up touching down? Up over and out.
  8. When you think about it, what's going on here is a lot like what goes on in the politics thread. People who care a lot about something, be it music or politics, tend to have very strong feelings. There's nothing inherently wrong with liking or not liking OP. The fact that one is in his corner or not, has no bearing whatsoever on him as a person or what he brought to the table. Even those who care little for him will admit that he was a remarkable musician. All this is is people with differing opinions, or OPinions as the case may be. A couple of other thoughts. Just like when people discuss politics, there is little, if any chance of changing anyone's mind. If you liked OP before he died, you're going to continue to like him. If you didn't, you won't. Further, I don't look at any of this as has been characterized by several other posters. These are healthy discussions and there's nothing wrong with having them. There's no sinister inner circle here, no cabal passing judgement on your credibility, just a lot of guys and a few gals who are passionate about the music. If you like OP but others with more perceived clout don't, that doesn't make you a knuckle head. Nor does anyone who happens not to agree with you think that you are a knuckle head. Up over and out.
  9. I stopped listening after their fourth album, but that first one...my Lordy me. Some great blues based tunes on that bad boy. My favorite though, is off Led Zep III, the pinwheel album. Since I Been Lovin' You is a kick ass blues if ever there was one. Up over and out.
  10. Oh oh. Someone's in my hand. Guess the ol' poker face isn't quite what it used to be. Lon, you must've seen John Benson Brooks in the reflection from my glasses. How else could you have known? Up over and out.
  11. Chas, OK, fair enough. I'll see your Sandole Brothers and raise you a Duane Tatro. Up over and out.
  12. Hank, If it's the music you're interested in and you have no luck getting ahold of the CD itself, both "Gone" and Murphy's 1955 release, "New Orbits in Sound" are available on e-music. Both are exceptionally good and highly recommended. If you're into this kind of approach to jazz, have you checked out Rod Levitt? His OJC is also available on e-music. Up over and out.
  13. How about "Turkish Women at the Baath"? Up over and out.
  14. Conrad, How do you go about posting a video from youtube? I tried for about a half an hour the other evening with no luck at all. Thanks. Up over and out.
  15. I'd just about kill for a rework of The Sound of Jazz. If this clip is any indication, I'm willing to wait for the rest of the story. Every time I see that clip of Lester Young, it fascinates me. I mean I love Ben's break and Hawk's, but Prez's solo is head and shoulders above the others. The absolute epitome of style, taste and economy. Up over and out.
  16. I think in the context of this discussion, you have to substitute the word "favorite" for "greatest" or "best". That's the only way Gullin and Adams can peacefully coexist in the same dialogue. Marcello, thanks for posting that v-clip. Adams could definitely swing. I'd never heard him talk. He had some great pipes. If he hadn't been a musician, he might have done voice work for a living. Up over and out.
  17. No contest. Lars Gullin. Up over and out.
  18. Seems to me that would be about as likely as him refusing a phone call from Lou Donaldson. Up over and out.
  19. I just ordered Grape's first album from Collector's Choice. For sure not the cheapest of options, but at least they have it. Free shipping. Up over and out.
  20. According to the Amoeba Records website, the GP CD is is now scheduled for release on November 6th. Up over and out.
  21. No argument here. Babe may not be sufficient. Up over and out.
  22. I have mixed feelings about the departure of The Unit. Maddening inconsistency will be his legacy in New York. I do think the Yanks have made great progress in restocking their lower echelons considering this trade and the Sheffield move with Detroit. Jayson Stark practically raved about this last night on ESPN. Notwithstanding, at this point in time, every Yankee fan must to be concerned about the rotation. Personally, I'm reserving judgement until the Clemens card is played. I just have a hunch that we're going to see The Rocket back in pinstripes. That will change the whole dynamic. Up over and out.
  23. Personally, given that I'm a big hockey fan and I live in Portland, Oregon, I'd rather see the Penguins come out here. But, KC seems to be at the head of the pack. As usual, we just drag our feet out here. If the Pens do relocate to Kansas City, one can only hope they have nicer uniforms than the city's other NHL franchise, the woebegone Kansas City Scouts. This may be the single worst looking uniform in the history of professional sports. Up over and out.
  24. I know there was a discussion of Twin Peaks someplace on this thread, but I didn't want to peruse all 16 pages of comments, so if this information is already out there, just consider this a confirmation. The second season will be released on April 10, 2007. It's available for pre-order from Amazon for $36.99. Bring it on!! Up over and out.
