  1. Tom, Did you check to see if the station you were listening to posts their play lists on the internet? Lots of stations do that now. Also, you might try calling the on-air staff to ask them directly. Good luck. I know how this kind of thing can drive you nuts.
  2. So if I told you that I was six and loved Mickey Mantle, that doesn't work? Oh lordy, lordy, please tell me I'm not beneath contempt. That could ruin my weekend.
  3. Well at least that explains why I never became a Red Sox fan.
  4. Sometimes you get to messing around on YouTube and find something pretty interesting. In this case, video of John Coltrane with the Wynton Kelly Trio. Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. I had never seen this before. Hopefully, it will be new to you too. Kelly could swing with the best of them. It's no wonder Miles liked him so much.
  5. I agree 100% with what Erik says on the issue of "come lately" Yankee fans. The interlocked "N" and "Y" is iconic, something way more than just a team logo. With respect to longevity as a fan, I go all the way back to 1954 when I first saw the light at six years of age. I was born, raised and still live in Portland, Oregon. In this country, that's about as far away from New York City as you can get.
  6. Real life validation of the old adage; "you can never overestimate the value of a long-time piano mover friend."
  7. Oh I know that. I was just looking for an excuse to use the "browning in the skillet" line.
  8. I see the Red Sox have begun starting Mike Lowell in the DH spot. While this may not definitively indicate that Ortiz is cooked, he's at least browning in the skillet. Think Cliff Lee.
  9. Wecome to Loserville. Population? Javier Vazquez. If you need an object lesson in the difference between pitching in the National and the American League, look no further than this bozo and his nearly double digit ERA. Dynamite in one league and a pop gun in the other. I'm not sure what the Yankees and Brian Cashman were thinking when they made this move, but whatever it was, they missed by a country mile.
  10. Jim, If you can find the time, it would be fun to hear about your "adventures" from time to time. Some folks on the board know what it's like to be on the road, but most of us haven't a clue. Weather in PDX is kind of crummy right now and isn't supposed to be much better on Friday. Aside from the weather, let me know what you think of our fair city.
  11. I was just perusing the box score. A win is a win, but with the exception of Rivera, the Yank's bullpen remains a question mark. I sure wish they hadn't ruined Joba Chamberlain. If they'd just left him alone and let him work as the set up guy and eventual successor to Mo, I'm not sure we'd be having this discussion.
  12. I'm not sure you can fix what ails the Mariner's offense by tweaking the batting order. I think Franklin Gutierrez is going to have a break out season both at the plate and in the field, but if you look at the rest of their line up, it's not going to strike fear into the hearts of many opposing pitchers. Not to mention that the M's are already having to deal with the curse that is Milton Bradley. A mere eight games into the season, he's already had his first one on one time out with Dan Wakamatsu. That's not a good sign. Neither is his .045 batting average. While there's no arguing that a healthy return of Lee and Bedard would make the M's staff among the strongest in either league, you still have to score runs to win games. I think it may be a long year for Seattle fans.
  13. Well I'm passed stupid now. I think the game has past Big Papi by.
  14. Season 5 of Weeds. Unfortunately, this show has been in a downward spiral since Nancy hooked up with the Mexican mafia. I'll stick with it, but I wish they could recapture the spark that made Seasons 1 & 2 so enjoyable. The next series in my Netflix cue is The WIre. I've heard nothing but good things about this show. I'm looking forward to it.
  15. Not to hijack this thread, but the number of grammatical dunces turned out by our educational system at all levels is stunning. Just read your local newspaper. It's amazing to me what now passes for acceptable writing. This morning, I was reading an article where the author used to word past instead of passed. I mean, what was he thinking, not to mention his editor. Then you see some knuckleheads who are suggesting that it ought be OK to use what I call twitter-slang in formal written communication. The dumbing down continues, unabated.
  16. Geez, he sounds like Ronnie Spector.
  17. I was about 75% Masters 25% Yankees today. Burnett looked sharp after a shaky first inning. I know Texiera always starts slow, but 2010 is especially slow even by his standards. Nick Johnson isn't much better. I'm sure these guys will come around. For now, I'm content to let the lower half of the lineup carry the team. Given that all the gears haven't quite meshed, 4-2 works fine for me.
  18. How about Ben Roethlisberger? How about Marv Albert? The Duke Lacrosse team. Or, if you will allow Latinos into the argument, Alex Rodriquez or Diego Maradona? Also, don't forget that the higher the profile, the more negative attention an athlete will attract, Kobe Bryant being another good example. Also, if the person in the crosshairs happens to be someone who has deliberately cultivated a squeaky clean image, all the more so. One last thought. As much as you would like Tiger Woods to be a "Black Person", he is not.
  19. You're wrong. This is not a black or a white thing. Not unless character comes in colors. Trying to make the case that the public's reaction to Tiger Woods' escapades is racially based misses the mark completely. What really pisses people off is that they were hoodwinked by someone they thought was worthy of their trust, perhaps more so than any other figure in the history of professional sports. Tiger spent millions carefully crafting an image that we, as fans, completely bought into. So, yes, I think we would be having this conversation regardless of race. This is a simply a case of being let down by someone who we were absolutely, positively convinced we could trust. The reaction is more visceral because that trust has been violated in such an unseemly and self-indulgent manner.
  20. Looks like Javier Vasquez hasn't lost a thing. He's just as bad now as he was the last time he pitched for the Yankees. Here's his line tonight against The Rays: 5.2 IP 8 Hits 8 Runs 8 Earned Runs 3 Home Runs 5 K's 2 Walks 12.71 ERA Not sure this is quite what the Yanks were looking for out of their five hole.
  21. Kenny Dorham's live 1963 recording from The Flamboyan in Queens, New York is now available on eMusic.
  22. Opinions on this recording? I've seen it described as modal and as soul jazz. Kind of an odd combination. It has two versions of the title track which, if I understand correctly, is something of a funk piece, perhaps along the lines of The Sidewinder? Not sure about any of the other tunes although some of the other titles are self-explanatory. Any comments on the vocals? They're by an artist I'm not familiar with by the name of Eva Harris. How many tracks have vocals? Thanks.
  23. Could they have gotten Tiger to seem any more like Earl...all puffy, old and worn out? Very unflattering, although I'm sure the look was created very deliberately. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when they were discussing how they would shoot this "commercial". I agree with Dan. A total misfire.
  24. I assume Dan is doing a time out in the Mr. Turtle pool. For any Sox fan, tonight's loss would be a tough one to swallow. You get a solid start from John Lackey and then, really, nothing from the pen. Bard might throw as hard as anyone, but he has a tendency to put the ball right in the hitter's wheelhouse. Never a good sign. And Papelbon continues his now you see him now you don't act which would drive anyone nuts. Kudos to Curtis Granderson for nice start. I still don't think he's going to hit lefties worth a darn, but he's sure going to hit some home runs. Nice bounce back from Chan Ho Park who pitched three innings, gave up one hit and collected the win. On to Tampa and another tough series. Let's hope guys like Johnson and Texiera who are 0-9 and 0-12 respectively, will start to get their groove on.
