That must be the best jazz CD store in The Netherlands. They used to have all those David Murray DIWs in stock when I first started collecting jazz. I no longer live nearby, so I haven't been there in years.

Are there any box bargains currently available?

A little birthday present for yourself? Please let us know if they included the book (120 pages) for this set and what the packaging is like. -
Over the last twelve months: amazon(.co.uk, .de, .fr, .com), primarily third party sellers cdjapan ebay importcds jazzmessengers mosaic organissimo I've never paid for a download in my life and will likely stop buying music altogether before I do.

I did not order any of the former Collectibles only titles, or at least do not own those Collectibles. Partly it's my fault. I should not have tried to upgrade titles already in my collection. Having spent €80 on unsatisfactory product, I'm unwilling to take a chance on any of the other albums in this series.

To me they (Mingus, Blakey & Monk) sound loud and very bright with no extra detail compared to the earlier EU/US CDs. A firm step back imo.

Not sure whether this is the original Atlantic/Rhino boxset, if that's an issue for you. Amazon are showing the label as "CLASSICAL". Nope, that's the recent reissue. It's official. The back art differs slightly from the 1997 box (the blue Warner Music Group logo, and it's made in the EU instead of the U.S.A.). -

Charles Mingus - Passions Of A Man: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1956-1961) for £19. -
Given the poor sound quality of these Warner Japan reissues, this seems to be a better deal for those who missed it: Passions Of A Man: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1956-1961) for £19.

Un-American Jazz ! Bop to post-bop (and everything in between)
erwbol replied to Simon8's topic in Recommendations
I'd love to hear more by that saxophonist, Zbyszek Namyslowski. Any recommendations? -
I haven't watched Dexter since season 4. I read a spoiler-heavy review of the finale that said it was so bad it invalidated the entire series -- and that they now regretted watching any Dexter episodes at all. Harsh... ... but true (except for regretting watching seasons 1 through 4). The last three seasons have been contrary to the Dexter character from the early seasons. Season 5 was a disappointment, but from season 6 on it was an entirely different show. Also, they didn't have a clue what to do with any of the supporting cast. ---- Now watching Citizen Khan.

Yes, why is it so criminal to make the other original mono tapes available again? These albums were widely listened to that way for many years. Don't like it, don't buy it. This is something completely different from those decadent luxury Columbia Miles sets Sony keeps insisting on releasing: Mati & The Music: 52 record Covers 1955/2005 A limited edition book of 500 numbered copies. Including a double album by Miles Davis Released for the first time from his legendary "Bitches Brew" European tour. €412.89EUR ($541.43) (It's just the 1969 Copenhagen concert on vinyl)

A couple of years ago I read something about fake Tzadik CDs from Eastern Europe being sold on ebay. I was just wondering. The Japanese characters OBI with a made in the EU mention made me wonder. These must be real then. I just wonder how sophisticated counterfeits can be.
-
They are fakes, right? What serial numbers & logos are in the CD matrix ring? A Warner logo perhaps like the Universal logo on Universal releases? Does Warner have its own pressing plant in the EU like Universal?

Herbie Hancock Complete Columbia Box
erwbol replied to djcavanagh's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
You might get lucky, but if you take the Miles Davis box as an example, the only copy left at amazon discounting third party sellers costs over £400. Since the Hancock box is a large box at 34 CDs like the Miles box (53 albums, 71 CDs & 1 DVD), perhaps at most you will eventually get a reduced offering like The Perfect Miles Davis Collection (20 albums, 22 CDs). Such a set would most likely not include rarities like the Japan only releases. -
I'll just let my pre-order run, too ... and yeah, if anyone has any sources on the *entire* box being reprocessed to more roomy (hey, does a mono trumpet only need one valve? so KoB was in three-channel, right?), please enlighten us. If not, we've all got the point now, no need in beating a dead horse once it's dead. As for Monk at Newport, David, do look for this expanded 2CD Legacy reissue from 2002, it's OOP but can be found: Btw, why did he mis-spell his name? We all do know his birth certificate said "Thelonious Mono" Thanks for the suggestion - in fact I identified that when I looked around for the tracks. I don't have it. When I see it at the right price I'll jump I think. At least they got it right on this one. Breaking news: US Shutdown Forces Sony To Fold-Down All Holliday Releases To Mono But, but, why the Stereo logo when it's Mono? oh, wait, it's Mono in Stereo, I get it now! Yes, including his no.1 hit single Blue Plane.

They should include a Herbie space suit action figure with guitar shoulder synth modeled on that photo to complete the set. -

From samples, the eighties pop material was so awful it's funny, but the seventies funky stuff was interesting. I primarily want to own all the acoustic material from the seventies/early eighties. At the moment I only have The Piano in my collection (I lost my copy of 2004's Live Under The Sky). -

link (AnalogPlanet) A positive review of a recent Kind Of Blue 180g Columbia mono LP (dated 24 September 2013). Quotes: "According to Steve Berkowitz, who, with engineer Mark Wilder, has overseen all of the Miles Davis reissues going back many years, both of the original 3-track tapes used in recent years to produce the SACDs as well as 2008's blue 180g vinyl 50th Anniversary Collection box set are now in very poor condition even though they sat untouched in the vault from 1959 until 1992." "Wildler and Berkowitz recently decided to do another and perhaps final 3-track KOB transfer: to DSD, to 192/24 bit PCM (and probably other resolution digital) and at the same time, a two-channel stereo and a mono mixdown to analog tape. The two channel mix down will most likely be the source of a Mobile Fidelity stereo reissue coming later in the year as part of that label's Miles Davis stereo vinyl reissue project." "The reissue's mix down from three tracks to one has been so skillfully and carefully done, even veteran mono KOB listeners might have difficulty guessing the source were that the only criterion."

Blue Train, I have you on ignore, but I can still see it if someone quotes you. When you get too excited and climb your high horse frothing at the mouth, it seems like your 'true liberal' identity is a bit of a fetish as well. It is astounding to me that you think it is OK to go around posting KKK imagery accusing people you hardly know of racism, while you can't take a joke ridiculing your own 'true liberal' fetish. It would have been better for the board if I hadn't posted the reply I did, but what's done is done. ---------- Anyway, I pre-ordered this because I think of these sets Sony has been putting since 2009 the ones that have been remastered again by Mark Wilder and Maria Triana have improved sound and are good value at pre-order prices. I hope they put out a volume 2 that covers the second great quintet.

Where are your sources for the alleged non-existence of the mono tapes. Only Kind Of Blue seems certain to be lost I think. I'd rather the zipper stays closed.
